30 For 30 Movement headed to Harlem’s Land Yoga

I learned yesterday at yoga that the 30 For 30 Movement is heading to Harlem’s Land Yoga tomorrow, May 20. You may ask, why should I care and who is 30 For 30? Apparently, 30 For 30 is a sisterhood in NYC that supports and inspires woman to commit to at least 30 minutes of exercise or movement for 30 consecutive days. 30 For 30 has chosen to expose their fellow “sistas” to a night of  beginners yoga at Land Yoga in Harlem so that they have another option to consider to help them keep on moving.

If you’re interested in checking out 30 For 30, they will be taking a class at Land Yoga in Harlem tomorrow  (May 20) at 7:45 pm. Better yet, if you’ve ever wanted to try a beginners yoga class at Land Yoga with plenty of other fellow beginners, tomorrow’s class would be perfect!

Hope to see you there!

Land Yoga, Asali Yoga, Beloved Yogi Harlem, and Friends of Morningside Park have come together for a fundraiser to educate and end human trafficking-and we are invited to participate as well. On March 9th at 2 pm, these Harlem yoga centers will be doing 108 Sun Salutations in Morningside Park near 120th Street. This one-day event unites yoga practitioners in the City-and around the world-to support human trafficking.

Last year 3,000 individuals from Mysore, India, to London, New York, and Tokyo came together for the one day to raise awareness and funds to Odanadi to support their work rescuing and rehabilitating victims of trafficking, exploitation and abuse, and educating and empowering vulnerable communities. Odanadi has rescued and rehabilitated more than 2,000 children, carried out in 60 brothel raids and brought 137 traffickers to justice.

The goal for this year is to have more than 100 participants at Morningside Park. To participate in this event, which costs $30, go here to register or pick up a sponsorship form at Land Yoga at 2116 Frederick Douglass Ave to raise money through family, friends, and colleagues who plan on participating.

Is Jado Sushi in Harlem starting off in the community on the wrong foot?

20120605-235505.jpg
It has been really fun and exciting lately to blog about some of the recent openings happening in Harlem, such as The Corner Social, Harlem Food Bar and Frederick Cafe Bistro. All these places have opened with such positive fanfare and the management behind these establishments are a delight to work with. However, there is one dining establishment on Frederick Douglass Blvd that is getting ready to open and I am finding it difficult to rave about. I am contemplating not evening dining there. Why? You may or may not know that there’s been an ongoing conflict between the owner of Jado Sushi, which is located in The Douglass Condo retail space (2118 FDB), and the owner of Land Yoga, which has been established in The Douglass for almost a year now and is Jado’s neighbor to the right.

According to online reports, Land Yoga in Harlem has been respectfully asking Jado Sushi, which is owned by the same person who owns The Winery on 116th Street, to kindly sound proof the restaurant so that it does not affect the environment of the yoga studio. Those multiple requests to Jado Sushi have been ignored to date, according to Land Yoga. HarlemGal Inc contacted The Winery asking for comment about Land Yoga’s request to sound proof and they did not respond.

Another reason I am blogging about this now is ’cause multiple readers have asked, why have you not mentioned anything about Jado Sushi in Harlem on your blog? Well, this is why. I am aware of the conflict going on between Jado and Land Yoga in Harlem.

For conversation sake, I have even asked Harlem business owner(s) about this and most have informally commented it is the responsibility of Jado Sushi  to sound proof the place since they are coming into a retail area that has already been established, apartments above the Jado space will more than likely complain about the noise below so it’s best to sound proof now rather than later and its the politically correct thing to do. Most of the businesses on FDB support each other. Yesterday, I read that the owner of Melba’s stopped by Harlem Food Bar recently to show her support. That’s classy!

Personally, I am not clear on why Jado Sushi would not want to sound proof the place now versus wait until later like when more complaints potentially come in or this get’s escalated into a potential legal matter. Then again, maybe it’s not Jado’s responsibility to sound proof their place or is it? Does anyone have any thoughts on this subject? Should Jado Sushi in Harlem sound proof its place to accommodate Land Yoga?

And as for dining at Jado Sushi, at the moment I don’t want to even think about going there when it opens knowing this conflict is nowhere near a resolution and that I might be interrupting someone’s yoga practice-if Jado is not sound proofed. It doesn’t feel right as a long time practicing yogi. That’s another reason why I can’t get excited about this place and starting to believe that Jado Sushi just might be starting off in Harlem on the wrong foot leading to an uneventful opening.

Top 50 things to do with kids in Harlem

20120305-191221.jpg
According to Mommy Poppins, there is a boat load of fun and interesting activity to do in Harlem with kids! So much so that they have done the heavily lifting for us and compiled a list of the Top 50 Things to do with kids in Harlem!

The site mentions a ton of activity to do in Harlem from shaking your bon, bon at the Sundae Sermon in Morningside Park, which right now is happening at El Museo in Spanish Harlem until the weather warms up. They also mention participating in family concerts at Kidberry, taking family yoga classes at Land Yoga, watching concerts at Richard Rogers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park, ice skating at Lasker Rink in Central Park North, bowling at Harlem Lanes, explore Hamilton Grange and more. The list is 50 lines long. Take a look.

The only other items I would have added is renting bikes at MODSquad Cycles and biking in the northern part of Central Park and attending the annual Pumpkin Sail at Harlem Meer. Aside from that, Mommy Poppins covered plenty of things to do in Harlem. What do you think? Are there other activities that should be on that list? If so, tell us!

Is a Japanese restaurant the next place to open on Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Blvd?

20120131-130031.jpg
For those of you who were hoping that the next place to open up in Harlem on or near Frederick Douglass Blvd would be a diner, sorry to tell you, it’s not happening. However, if you wanted a Japanese restaurant to open in Harlem, your wish is highly likely to come true! A few reliable readers have tipped off HarlemGal Inc about how the last remaining commercial space in The Douglass Condo, located on the northeast corner of FDB and 114th, has been rented out and the space is being prepped for a restaurant, a Japanese restaurant to be exact! This restaurant would be located to the left of Land Yoga.

We also hear the person behind leasing this space is an existing Harlem business owner. Their first business was on FDB, but then moved the same business around the corner and is still operating there. The planned Japanese restaurant we are talking about will be their second separate business in Harlem-and not far from the first business.

So there you have it! No diner is coming any time soon. Just sushi, sake, edamame and probably a lot more will be offered soon in this space in Harlem. Workers have been seen on site daily so who knows when this new Japanese restaurant will open. Hopefully in 2012! Will keep you posted!
