Youth took to the stage at The Apollo recently for Amateur Night and boy did it shine bright! Watch Reignn Acedera sing a Whitney Houston song at the The Apollo Theater for the famous Amateur Night. She does a good job and clearly wants a singing career. If you go to YouTube she has several videos!
And by the way, she won the kids division at Amateur Night at The Apollo. Read the story here and see another video!

Broadway comes to Harlem today! An array of Broadway’s Rising Stars singing music form the great oldies, to current smash hits will be at Harlem Meer this afternoon starting at 2 p.m. Broadway at Harlem Meer will benefit The Union Settlement Association, Manhattan HIV Network for children with HIV and AIDS.
Take the 2/3 subway train to 110th Street at Central Park North or jump on the 6 to 110th Street and walk west to Central Park!

The Jazzmobile on Facebook left us several messages on our fan page reminding us that Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival kicks off this coming Monday, May 9 and runs through May 14. Thank you Jazz Mobile for that lovely reminder! We definitely want to let everyone know about this exciting event.
This 7-day festival celebrates the classic clubs and venues that made Harlem the jazz mecca beginning in the 1920’s. Harlem Jazz Shrines Festival is a collaboration between The Apollo Theater, Harlem Stage and Jazzmobile.

Duke Ellington, Harlem’s famous jazz musician who is honored with a beautiful sculpture at East 110th Street and Fifth Avenue, performed at the Cotton Club in Harlem in the 1920’s and ’30’s. Now City Center’s Encores! series and Jazz at Lincoln Center will pay respect to the jazz great with “Cotton Club Parade,” a tribute to Ellington’s performances. “Cotton Club Parade” will have six performances at City Center this November (Nov. 18 to 22) with musical direction by Wynton Marsalis and featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
The series will run every two years, with the next production scheduled at the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center during its 2013-14 season. Tickets for “Cotton Club Parade” can be purchased through City Center beginning Aug. 15.

The students at PS 161 Pedro Albizu Campos Middle in Harlem received a nice surprise yesterday (May 3rd). Mrs. Jay Z, also known as Beyonce, made a surprise visit to the Harlem school located at 499 West 133rd Street. The visit was a part of the “Let’s Move” promotion, which is the First Lady Michelle Obama’s youth fitness campaign.
A group of students were filming their rendition of Beyonce’s “Move Your Body” video when Beyonce made her way out on to the floor of the school’s gymnasium and surprised the group of students. In addition to dancing with the students, Beyonce posed for photographs with them. Very nice! See more coverage at JustJared.com.

Gospel for Teens Choir in Harlem has been receiving a ton of press lately-and it is well deserved to say the least. About three weeks ago, Vy Higginsen and her students were on CBS’s 60 Minutes for a good majority of the program. World music takes center stage this Thursday and Friday in Harlem. Amkoullel, the Malian hip hop artist will be performing for the first time in Harlem (and in the USA) this Thursday and Friday (April 7-8).
On April 7th, see Amkoullel perform at the Shrine, located at 2271 Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd. The show starts at 8 PM. At Shrine, there is no cover charge. The next day (April 8), see the Afro-beat artist perform at Farafina Cafe, located at 1813 Amsterdam Avenue. This show starts at 11 PM on Friday.
Aside from his music, Amkoullel is known for “harmoniously combining traditional and contemporary global cultures to promote social responsibility.”

One of the Fab Five will step foot in Harlem and perform at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater. The Associated Press reports today that Paul McCartney will perform for the very first time at The Apollo on December 13!

Early evening Thursday (October 14), the Harlem online community on Twitter were all abuzz informing all interested parties that Prince was in Harlem holding a surprise news conference at the Apollo Theater, and if you wanted to attend the conference held by the Minnesota rock star to get there by 5 PM. Apparently someone or entity made it on time to the Apollo to hear Prince launch his Welcome 2 America tour starting in December and captured the entire announcement on video. Kudos to them! Now all I want to know is will Harlem be on the tour schedule for Welcome 2 America? I sure hope so! My fingers are crossed!
