Harlem’s Cantina Taqueria & Tequila Bar moves over one avenue

From the picture below, looks like one of our reader’s comment on a May 13th blog post is absolutely true that Cantina on Adam Clayton Powell Blvd is moving over one avenue to Frederick Douglass Blvd! Congrats to Cantina Taqueria & Tequila Bar.

While I’m sure they are (and were) doing good business on ACP, as well as Lenox Avenue, moving to Harlem’s restaurant row will more than likely take their biz up a notch or two! There’s a lot of foot traffic on FDB. Plus their presence adds to the variety of food choices on this busy avenue.

Looking forward to visiting soon and ordering some tacos from Cantina at 2099 Frederick Douglass Blvd!

Pods arrive in Central Harlem along with a gigantic mural

Dining pods have arrived to part of the restaurant scene in Harlem. And a giant mural on the northwest corner of Frederick Douglass Blvd and 116th Street is going up to commemorate this form of outdoor dining! If you live in the area, you can’t miss the mural (or the pods). The mural looks awesome!

Dining pods are now lining FDB from 116th to 120th Street at the following restaurants: Bixi Harlem, Blvd Bistro, Chocolate, Harlem Burger, Harlem Tavern, Mess Hall/Double Dutch, Silvana and Vinateria. These greenhouse styled dining pods were provided to minority and women-owned restaurants on FBD as part of an initiative sponsored by the Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance and Stella Artois, a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch.

The 7-story, 2800 square foot mural was designed and painted by Harlem-based Giannina Gutierrez. Gutierrez created the mural to welcome diners to the area and to showcase the vibrancy of the neighborhood.

Having these dining pods donated to small businesses, who truly need the help during this time, is a great example of private sector, non profits and the community coming together to collaborate for the greater good. This is a wonderful example of corporate social responsibility at its best.

Dragon Sushi Harlem opens

Recently, this blog mentioned a sushi place is coming to Frederick Douglass Blvd. Dragon Sushi is open as of November 16. We walked by and the sign said “open.” Stop by Dragon Sushi! They are at the near corner of 112th and FDB!

Root Juicery of Harlem is open, stop by 112th and FDB

On Halloween this year, many Harlem restaurants on Frederick Douglass Blvd handed out lots of candy to kids, even new businesses were prepared, such as Root Juicery of Harlem! (FYI. I posted about this place months back and either incorrectly named it or there was a change in ownership.) We learned over the weekend that this new cold press, juice joint is now open for business!

Stop by Root at 2073 FDB for a smoothie, juice or a bowl! They have a wonderful menu to start! Here’s their IG account to follow!

Bixi, new Harlem restaurant opening next to Lido

New York City is officially open! I’ve been waiting to share this picture for quite some time due to covid19 and the recent Black Lives Matter movement. Apparently, there is going to be a new restaurant opening on Harlem‘s restaurant row called Bixi. It’s going to be Asian cuisine I believe and it will be managed and operated by the same individuals who run Lido Italian Restaurant on the corner of 117th and Frederick Douglass Boulevard. That’s all the info I have right now. I’m sure more details will arise soon!

Vege spot opens in Harlem, Lyn-Genet’s Kitchen owned by bestselling author

There are interesting finds in Harlem. They are constantly popping up every where and its hard to keep track. But here’s a new spot you may want to check out. It’s called Lyn-Genet’s Kitchen located in the Hamilton Heights area of Harlem. I believe its been open for about a month. It serves mainly vegetarian food, along with a few slight meat dishes. Here’s the menu.

The restaurant is backed by its namesake, Lyn-Genet Recitas, whose name I came across years ago when I would blog about 5 and Diamond. Remember them? According to Recitas Instagram account, she is a NY Times bestselling author of The Metabolism Plan.

So if you’re looking for a new place to dine at try Lyn-Genet’s Kitchen. It’s located on Broadway between 141 and 142 Street in Harlem. If you try it out, come back here and let us know what you think of the place.

Food and Drink Boulevard in Harlem happening May 10

2017 Food & Drink Blvd Promo Image for PressTomorrow, May 10 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., the Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance will hold its sixth annual Food & Drink Boulevard event along Harlem’s Restaurant Row.  This event invites local residents and visitors to explore restaurants and bars along the Frederick Douglass Boulevard from 112th to 124th Streets by reserving a wristband to receive $5.00 deals at 19 participating venues.

To assist patrons in navigating up and down Frederick Douglass Boulevard, FDBA is offering free pedicab service to wristband holders, and a mobile device-friendly map that shows where all 19 participating restaurants and bars are located, as well as each businesses’ $5.00 menu offerings.

To reserve a free wristband for the event, visit the FDBA website at http://www.fdballiance.org. On the night of the event, wristbands will also be available at Harlem Tavern, 2153 Frederick Douglass Boulevard on the corner of West 116th Street, and Angel of Harlem, 2272 Frederick Douglass Boulevard on the corner of West 122nd Street.

Farm-to-table restaurant opens in Harlem, Take the A train to Clay

img_1113Harlem villagers no longer have to turn to downtown to dine at a farm-to-table restaurant. Harlem dining patrons can now experience farm-to-table at Clay, located on the corner of 123rd Street and Manhattan Avenue.

What does farm-to-table mean? According to Clay Restaurant, it means “they source all of their produce, meats and fish from small, local suppliers. Nothing is mass-produced or served out of season. Wines and spirits also come from small producers, both seasoned veterans and ground-breaking upstarts alike, who care about their terrain and couple minimal intervention with maximum innovation.”

The New American restaurant opened up on the Harlem corner six weeks ago and is ready to serve locals (or anyone that walks in) with dinner and brunch on the weekends.

Harlem organizations partner with FIT to present Harlem Holiday Windows, free tours provided

Move over Fifth Avenue, Harlem is getting into the holiday windows game. Spanning the corridor of Frederick Douglass Boulevard between 114th and the 122nd streets, eight Harlem businesses will display windows designed and executed by fifteen students from the Fashion Institute of Technology’s (FIT) Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design (VPED) BFA program. The window displays will depict holiday-themed scenes from the Harlem Renaissance. The windows will be on view from November 30 to January 2. Visitors are invited to stroll through the historic neighborhood throughout the holidays and enjoy the window displays, while learning a bit of Harlem’s rich history.

To kick off the season, two free window tours on November 30 and December 3 will be provided by ArtCrawl Harlem, Inc. The tours will feature live storytellers and vignettes with actors and performers bringing the windows to life. The family friendly outing will also include free children’s activity and coloring books, highlighting historical themes of the period, and refreshments from some of the participating restaurants.

Windows will be decorated at the following businesses:

Harlem Holiday Windows free kick off event will start at the Harriet Tubman statue on 122nd Street at 5:30pm on November 30, and will feature an interactive and intergenerational music performance by special guest Shine and the Moonbeams. The second kick off, also starting on 122nd Street, will be at 3pm on December 3, ending at the Shop Harlem Live Harlem Holiday Expo at MIST. Produced by Harlem Park to Park, the program will include an art filled afternoon for kids and adults.

In addition to the free kick off tours on November 30 and December 3, a full schedule of paid tours and programming around the Holiday Windows, will be offered by ArtCrawl Harlem, Inc., throughout the holiday season, from November 30-December 21. Programming will include weekly tours on Saturdays from 3–5pm (dates include December 3,10, 17).Registration is available on the website. Rates are $10 per person or $150 for groups 15-25.

RDV Harlem expected to open soon

The French are coming! I mean more French food is coming to Harlem’s restaurant row! This blog learned today that RDV Harlem, the new addition to the Frederick Douglass Blvd food scene, is expected to open this week. We actually heard tonight, marathon day!

So if you’re interested in checking out a new restaurant in Harlem donning New Mexico turquoise paint on the front, walk along FDB between 111th and 112th tonight to see if they’re open!
