See ‘True Crime New York’ films at Maysles Cinema in Harlem

Mar 26, 2011 @ 12:57

I have never seen Inside Job or Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Elliot Spitzer. I have been wanting to see these two documentaries for sometime. Now is my chance to see these films right here in Harlem!  According to Maysles Cinema, they are showing these two films this weekend under their “True Crime New York” series.

Client 9 shows tonight, March 26 at 7:30 PM. “This film is an in-depth look at what Spitzer himself refers to as greek tragedy.” And Inside Job, an Academy Award winner for 2010 Best Documentary, will show tomorrow, March 27 at 7:30 PM. This film “provides a comprehensive analysis of the global financial crisis of 2008, which at a cost over $20 trillion, caused millions of people to lose their jobs and homes in the worst recession since the Great Depression, and nearly resulted in a global financial collapse.” Order tickets here!

So if you want to see films on “true crime in the rotten apple” – particularly these two films, which is the last chance – head on over to Maysles Cinema in Harlem located at 343 Lenox Avenue, between 127th and 128th Streets. I plan to see one or probably both films this weekend. Lookout on foursquare!

Leelee Sobieski spotted in Harlem

An NYPD rookie was arresting someone on the streets of Harlem recently and let me tell you, this rookie appeared mean…and quite gorgeous. See photo above. Of course, the rookie I am talking about is only pretending. It is actress and Tribeca mom Leelee Sobieski, who was in character, along Manhattan Avenue and 114th Street in Harlem, for the TV pilot called Rookies. The crew has been filming in Harlem and will continue Sunday and Monday on Frederick Douglass Blvd from about 113th to 115th Street.

By looking at these photos, can you imagine if every NYPD rookie looked like Leelee? I’d say a good portion of the male population in the City would not mind getting arrested!

Rookies with LeeLee Sobieski filiming in Harlem

UPDATE: We have photos of the filming taking place along 114th and 115th Streets between Frederick Douglass Blvd and Manhattan Avenue!

On my way home last night, I saw several orange cones lined up along 114th Street between Manhattan Avenue and Frederick Douglass Blvd. I checked the signs and it’s Rookies, a CBS’ drama pilot being filmed in Harlem today, March 18 and March 20-21st from 6 AM to 1 AM. Rookies stars Leelee Sobieski and is produced by Robert De Niro. Nice! Maybe we will see Mr. De Niro!

Most who know me, know I love to go watch films, especially documentaries. This past weekend I went to the premiere of 759: Boy Scouts of Harlem, a documentary film about Scout Troop 759 from Harlem. The film played at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture located at 135th Street and Lenox.

I won’t go into too much detail about the film because I encourage everyone to go out and see it for yourself. However, what I will say is that the main character, Keith, is so adorable. All you want to do is root for him to succeed throughout the film and receive all the rewards of attending Boy Scout camp in upstate New York. In addition to watching Keith take on the challenges of camp, the other nice interesting aspect of the film is that it captures the potential of several young individuals. The film shows that these individuals can be or do anything they want in life, if they just stick with it and stay on the path to success, however they choose to define success. In my view, I saw future leaders in the making in this film. And if that ends up being the case…we’re all in good hands! Go see the film.
