As this blog first reported, there is a new place opening on the corner of 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. It’s called Cafe Frederick Harlem Parlor and signage is up in front of the place that’s located right across the street from Melba’s Restaurant. Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association, a Harlem based 501(c) (3) non-profit community organization, is looking for a college-bound Harlem high school senior! Why? The organization’s Scholarship Fund will award a $4,000 scholarship-1,000 renewable annually for four years-to a college-bound high school senior, who resides in Central Harlem from 110th Street to 135th Street, between Morningside and Third Avenues.
The application deadline is June 1 and the scholarship requirements are below. Click here to apply.
· Graduating high school seniors living in the greater Mount Morris Park/Central Harlem Community, from 110th Street to 135th Street, between Morningside and Third Avenues
· Student must have a C+ (75%) or better grade point average
· Student must have participated in a community service project
· Student must have accepted admission to a two or four-year college or university
· Student must demonstrate financial need by completing FAFSA application

Harlem Biospace, a new biotech incubator that opened recently for early stage life science companies, has launched a new kid initiative called HYPOTHEkids. HYPOTHEkids, a summer science camp starting in July, was developed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and technology entrepreneurs right here in Harlem.
Limited slots are available for this eight-week summer program for K-5 children. The program is designed and taught by Columbia University-affiliated faculty and students (from Teachers College and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences). There is a theme a week and each theme will be explored through different lenses of science.

Harlem parents have come together to host “No Time for Hate: A Benefit Night for the Ali Forney Center at Maysles Cinema” in Harlem on May 20th. All proceeds will benefit the Ali Forney Center, a Harlem-based nonprofit that serves the LGBTQ homeless youth.
The event will be held at Maysles Cinema. Reception refreshments will be provided by Harlem restaurants Settepani and Barawine. Tickets start at $25 and go all the way up to $1000. Benefit tickets can be purchased by using the following site: harlemagainstviolencehomophobia.mydagsite.com

The New York French American Charter School is hosting their annual Spring event open to the Harlem community this Saturday, May 3. The street festival will offer food from around the world, two bouncy houses, games, and a plant sale. Proceeds from the spring event will benefit programming at the school. See details below.

There’s brown butcher paper covering the windows in Harlem of what was Frederick Cafe Bistro at 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. Why? Because the place is currently being renovated as a new coffee shop. Frederick Cafe Bistro no longer exists. Yup. HarlemGal learned this recently. The owners of bier international, which owned Frederick Cafe Bistro, apparently sold their rights to the commercial space on the Northeast corner of 114th and FDB to new management. We don’t why they did this and we don’t know the name of the new management yet, however what we do know is that these new owners are currently renovating the space as a new coffee shop and it will be called Cafe Frederick.
This is the same space that housed Society Cafe and will now have its third business on this Harlem corner. As more information becomes available on Cafe Frederick, we will pass along.
This past week we told you about a fish market opening in Harlem on 131st Street and FDB. We have more details. The name of the place will be Lighthouse Fish Market. It will be offering fresh fish with the option to have it steamed, grilled or broiled, seasonal veggies, and side orders available will be Mac n cheese, candid yams, and greens with traditional shrimp and grits on Sundays. Also, Lighthouse plans to have chef specials throughout week.
If all goes as planned, the place will open in mid to late May at 131st Street and FDB.
Bestselling author, award-winning actor, and mother of two Julianne Moore will be in Harlem May 11, Mothers Day. Moore appears at Bank Street Bookstore on Sunday, May 11 at 1:00 pm to read and sign her latest book. Reservations are required by calling the bookstore at (212) 678-1654.
Moore has a another book out called “My Mom Is a Foreigner, but Not to Me.” It’s a story filled with memories of Julianne’s mother, who came from Scotland and spoke with an accent.
Bank Street Bookstore is located on 112th Street and Broadway.
Word has it that a new fish market will be opening in Harlem on 131st Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. We hear construction is completed. However, the place needs to pass inspection. Stay tuned. As more information becomes available, we will pass along.
Go back in time this weekend, April 26. That’s when Street Games, which takes place every year, is happening in East Harlem. Start time is 11 am.
Street Games brings back the classic games and sports played by previous generations and gives them a modern twist. New Yorkers young – and young at heart – can visit Classic Street Games zone and get moving with stickball, pogo sticks, hula hoops, double-dutch, yo-yos, and skateboarding clinics.
Street Games closes 114th Street and Pleasant Avenue in Harlem to vehicle traffic, so kids can participate in a soap box derby, learn to ride a bike clinics, street hockey, and relay races. On the adjacent fields, participants can test their soccer skills with the New York Red Bulls soccer team or throw a disc with the New York Empire ultimate team.
