Leelee Sobieski spotted in Harlem

Mar 19, 2011 @ 12:41

By HarlemGal
An NYPD rookie was arresting someone on the streets of Harlem recently and let me tell you, this rookie appeared mean…and quite gorgeous. See photo above. Of course, the rookie I am talking about is only pretending. It is actress and Tribeca mom Leelee Sobieski, who was in character, along Manhattan Avenue and 114th Street in Harlem, for the TV pilot called Rookies. The crew has been filming in Harlem and will continue Sunday and Monday on Frederick Douglass Blvd from about 113th to 115th Street.

By looking at these photos, can you imagine if every NYPD rookie looked like Leelee? I’d say a good portion of the male population in the City would not mind getting arrested!

Rookies with LeeLee Sobieski filiming in Harlem

UPDATE: We have photos of the filming taking place along 114th and 115th Streets between Frederick Douglass Blvd and Manhattan Avenue!

By HarlemGal
On my way home last night, I saw several orange cones lined up along 114th Street between Manhattan Avenue and Frederick Douglass Blvd. I checked the signs and it’s Rookies, a CBS’ drama pilot being filmed in Harlem today, March 18 and March 20-21st from 6 AM to 1 AM. Rookies stars Leelee Sobieski and is produced by Robert De Niro. Nice! Maybe we will see Mr. De Niro!

New York Magazine acknowledges, Harlem is hot

Feb 8, 2011 @ 10:30
By HarlemGal
What a difference a year makes?  Let’s reflect! April 11, 2010 Harlem is poorly ranked by Nate Silver for New York Magazine’s Neighborhood Issue. Does anyone remember this article? I certainly do. That article inspired me to write Top ten reason why Harlem is one of the best neighborhoods to live in. Let’s fast forward to today. Harlem and several local establishments are currently featured bright and big this week in a series of articles under the banner The Everything Guide to Harlem in NY Mag. It’s a creme-de-la-creme of articles featuring restaurants, markets, shops and bars in Harlem. My favorite article is The New New Harlem, which is sort of a “Whose In and Whose Out.” In my view, featuring several establishments in this type of format demonstrates the caliber and variety of places located in Harlem. Plus in order to pit two businesses against each other, there has to be plenty of selection. Clearly, Harlem has reached that point.

In closing, I will use soccer terms to describe this Harlem milestone. This article is another G-O-A-L for Harlem. Remember, we won Curbed Cup 2010 too. More importantly, it recognizes (again) what most of us have known all along, and now NY Mag too, Harlem is hot! Adelante!

Rolling Stone Magazine recently announced the greatest rock and roll Christmas songs. They named 16 songs and Kanye West’s “Christmas in Harlem” was ranked #16. Apparently the song is a follow-up to Run-DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis.”

Congrats to the artist and to the name of our community, i.e. Harlem! Its everywhere…books, movies, songs, and even bottles of liquor!

Paul McCartney performs at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater to a celebrity packed crowd

Dec 14, 2010 @ 0:12
By HarlemGal
Monday night was supposed to be a quiet evening relaxing without the computer. Yeah right. The evening ended up being quite the opposite. I got sucked into the real-time online coverage of Paul McCartney playing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, December 13 – mainly on twitter. I am a huge Paul/George/John/Ringo fan so it was easy for me to drop everything.

There were a variety of tweets that came in throughout the evening giving you a sense of what was happening. Deepak Chopra seemed to have the first photo make it out of the Apollo. Then followed by Martha Stewart.

While there were several twitters telling their followers in real-time what songs McCartney was performing at the Apollo, the Examiner.com was quick – and the first to provide the complete set list right after the event was over, along with photos and a post on which celebrities attended the event.

In the end, the Examiner was topped by a subscriber on YouTube, who soon posted live audio from the event right at 11 PM on December 13, which I have posted here. Hurry up and listen to it soon …who knows how long it will last!

According to several online reports, McCartney called the Apollo Theater “the holy grail” and a place he has “dreamed of playing for many a year.” What a nice touch and respectable acknowledgement to the Apollo by McCartney. That is rock royalty at its best!
