By HarlemGal
There are two wonderful events taking place this evening for you to consider for your Thursday Harlem holiday schedule.

First, we want to tell you about the Winter Celebration and Tree Lighting in Morningside Park, organized by the Friends of Morningside Park. Festivities will begin at 4:00 PM inside the St. Recreation Center at 123rd Street and Morningside Avenue. The holiday celebration will then move outside at 4:30PM. The holiday tree will be lit at 5:00 PM.

And second, we want to tell you about Harlem Flo’s Holiday Trunk Show, which will include items to purchase from local artists and designers. This event will take place at their second location, which is 2276 Frederick Douglass Boulevard, and starts at 6 PM.

So if you’re looking to attend a tree lighting and get some holiday shopping done, tonight is the night in Harlem.

Happy Holidays everyone!

My family Walkabout in Harlem

Nov 30, 2010 @ 13:06

By HarlemGal
While The Wall Street Journal recently posted their Walkabout in Harlem with Vibe Magazine Co-CEO Brett Wright and the WSJ’s Lee Hakwins, I want to share how I did my very own Walkabout with family members who were visiting Harlem from out West during Thanksgiving week. My Walkabout in Harlem included four kids, one adult (appearances will be smudged for obvious reasons) and one objective: to show them why I love Harlem and how they’ll end loving Harlem right back.

For clarification, two kids were entirely new to New York City. The other half have visited NYC before, however they never received a thorough Walkabout in Harlem. So what did I show my family in Harlem? Let’s begin.

First stop was Morningside Park. Since I had four kids with me, I wanted them to see the greenery that Harlem has to offer. After we walked through parts of Morningside Park, I challenged the kids to race each other up on one of the section of steep steps. I said, “pretend you are Rocky and race to the top.” And so they did! They reached the top in no time. I mentioned how some of the steep steps are workout areas for locals.

After the park, we walked over to Columbia University. I had to be a good and influential family member who must encourage education into the minds of little ones. I wanted them to see an Ivy League located in West Harlem.

Next on the list was St. John the Divine. The kids could not believe they were seeing something so massive and majestic! I told them when they get older and travel to part of Europe, they will see similar cathedrals.

We then made our way to Frederick Douglass Circle. Some of these kids have teachers as parents so I wanted them to learn a bit about Harlem’s history through sculptures. I also wanted them to ask, who is this sculpture of? It was a perfect segue to explain what they were seeing.

Next stop was the Duke Ellington sculpture. At this stop, I took the opportunity to remind both kids and adult that Harlem is the birthplace of jazz and that Duke Ellington played a major role. My family was impressed with the size and scope of this sculpture. And of course the kids wanted to stand underneath the sculpture. When your little, how can one resist.

The weather was perfect during our Walkabout in Harlem and Harlem Meer was a Fall magnet. My family thought this part of Central Park North was absolutely gorgeous! On that day my relatives wanted to just hang by the pond and watch the geese and ducks swim by!

To end the Walkabout in Harlem, we headed to 125th Street to see Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater and partake in some street vendor shopping. On 125th Street the kids purchased t-shirts that said “Harlem or I love Harlem.” Clearly, my family Walkabout in Harlem was a success. It caught on to youth clothing that will be worn out West. My objective was…mission accomplished!

Holiday trees available on Harlem’s Cathedral Parkway

I have lived in Harlem for several years now and never have I seen holiday trees for sale at the base of Morningside Park, right on Cathedral Parkway between Manhattan Avenue and Columbus Avenue. I saw workers setting up and unloading various sizes of trees right after Thanksgiving. I believe this is a first to sell trees at this location. I don’t recall a tree company ever selling holiday trees here before. Does anyone else recall differently?

HarlemCondoLife

I assume the company that is selling the holiday trees is doing so because there is a new demand in this part of Harlem. We have posted in the past about how the area is changing with an increase in condos and restaurants!
HarlemCondoLife also saw holiday trees for sale on Frederick Douglass Blvd and 122nd.
Last year, we spotted a ton of trees being sold on Lenox Avenue.
If you are interested in purchasing a holiday tree on Cathedral Parkway, they deliver and accept credit cards! And as always, if you know of other places in Harlem to buy holiday trees, please let us know. Happy Holidays!

Another Harlem church siding with the real estate gods?

Okay….what’s up with the church on Manhattan Ave between 115th and 116th Street? It appears that this place of worship has decided – by choice I hope – to side with the real estate gods.  They have a for sale sign out in front!  From my understanding, this place of worship is not the first to deal in real estate and probably will not be the last.  St. John the Divine sold part of their property to developers who built the Avalon on Morningside Heights Park and the building going up on the northwest corner of 115th Street and Fredrick Douglass Blvd is rumored to have a church inside the new condo once its complete. With all these religious organizations dabbling in real estate, I guess its a positive attribution toward Harlem from the man upstairs…in sky!

Central Harlem Building Going Down

I was walking along 110th Street and noticed the building on 110th Street and Manhattan Avenue was halfway knocked down. It appears this corner, which has been untouched forever with scaffolding, is going down, kuhputz, adios, etc. I wonder what’s going to happen with this space?  Maybe a new apartment building or retail space? Either way its prime Harlem real estate since its one block from Central Park North and right across the street from Morningside Heights Park.  If anyone knows, tell HarlemCondolife.com!

The New York City Coalition Against Hunger recently tipped off HarlemCondoLife about a farmers market serving the community of Harlem. We decided to check it out ourselves. What we discovered…their slogan “the farm comes to you” rings true.  You can see for yourself by heading to 110th Street and Manhattan Avenue. They’re right on the Northwest corner! According to Cara, the manager, the market has been open for more than two years and will be open this year until November 22, 2008.

Lights, Camera, Action – Filming in Harlem

Oct 12, 2008 @ 22:42

Orange parking cones lined up along the curb are a dead giveaway that something entertainment wise is happening in “the hood.” On Sunday, October 12 walking through Morningside Heights park there were permits and official letters from Sesame Workshop and the New York City Mayor’s Office for Film, Theater&Broadcasting saying film crews will be out in full force Monday, October 13 on Manhattan Avenue from 108th – 113th filming The Electric Company. This is exciting stuff! Even though I am an adult blogger, I may get up early to go see Big Bird or maybe get Miss Piggy’s autograph!  Are those characters still around?  Someone tell Harlemcondolife the latest on Sesame Workshop characters?
