Quickly scanning through Facebook, we learn today that Harlem Flo, located on Frederick Douglass Blvd and 122nd, will close! Stefan Handl, the owner of Harlem Flo, announced it today on social media saying “Harlem Flo will close after a successful eight year run and not sure what the future holds.”
Handl does not explain in his post why his shop will close in a little over a month. Either way, very disappointing to hear.
As more information becomes available, we will pass along.

Need plans for Halloween? How about spending Halloween on Harlem’s restaurant row? The Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance (FDBA) is organizing a Halloween in Harlem party along Frederick Douglass Blvd. Several businesses shown below with their logo will be handing out candy to trick or treaters and decorating their windows for all passerby’s to view.
For those without little ones, select restaurants will have $5 drink specials from 5 pm – 10 pm and be handing out 10 percent off coupons good retail partners with their logos listed below as well, such as BebeNoir, Bibi Salon, Harlem Flo, Franz James, Harlem Shambles and more!

A long time reader of HarlemGal Inc sent in a photo last night (July 12) of a new store coming to Harlem. The new store is called Serengeti Teas & Spices. It’s located at 2292 Frederick Douglass Blvd, where the old and first location of Harlem Flo use to be. Harlem Flo is still open , but down the street on FDB.
In the photo, it shows new signage, which states the name of the new Harlem business and says “specialty teas and coffees of Africa and the world.” Interesting! Looking forward to checking this place out.

Harlem Park to Park kicks off its fourth annual Spring Harlem Restaurant and Retail Month tomorrow (Feb 15) with an impressive list of restaurant and retail establishments in Central Harlem. I love it when I see Harlem-based companies in the news, specifically in glamorous places, such as in lifestyle magazines. This month Uptown Soap Co. received another nod from Vogue in their beauty section called Made in NY, aka Made in Harlem! Of course, it doesn’t hurt to get notice by Oprah too, which the Harlem based company has on their milestone belt as well.
Uptown Soap Co.’s Silvia Dontcheva tells HarlemGal Inc that “they make all of their products by hand in a small brownstone on 123rd Street in Harlem. The company started 4 years ago and although it began with solely soaps, they now specialize in bubble baths, soy candles, perfumes, body scrubs and more.”
No need to go downtown for these Made in Harlem products. Dontcheva says their products can be purchased in Harlem at the wonderful Harlem Flo on Frederick Douglass Blvd and 122nd Street. Owners Stefan and Louis have reordered from Uptown Soap since they started. Very cool. I know where I’m buying me some pretty soap! See ya at Harlem Flo!

This morning Land Yoga is holding its first full LED Primary Ashantga Yoga Class at 11:15 AM to raise money for Mother Hale Learning Center. The cost is $20 dollars. That fee gives you entrance to an afternoon fundraising reception, which will take place at 3 pm at Land Yoga, located near the corner of 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. This event also serves as a Bon Voyage party for Lara, the owner and teacher at Land Yoga. She’s heading back to India for a month!
Harlem Flo is having there annual trunk show featuring several local artists, such as the work of watercolorist Lynn Lieberman. That event starts at 2 pm. Harlem Flo’s Lifestyle Boutique is located at 122nd and Frederick Douglass Blvd.
Nick Coker’s Creative Vision, Inc. presents ‘A journey into the Art, the Psyche, and the Spirit of Nick Coker’s Visions’, a narrated tour and examination of the late Harlem artists’ art, poetry, prose and music at The Dwyer Cultural Center. This event starts at 6 pm and ends at 8 pm!
Nick Coker grew up in Harlem during the Renaissance era. Coker became the first black artist to work for leading advertising agencies and fashion houses on Madison Avenue. He worked for artists and organizations such as Emilio Pucci, the Seventh Avenue Fashion District, Bobby Hooks and the Negro Ensemble Company, along with many others. Coker was also the first artist to put art on t-shirts and remove a piece from the iconic apple that is now a signature of New York City tourism.

On June 21, look around in Harlem. You may hear music everywhere. Harlem Park to Park (HP2P) and its HP2P businesses are taking part in Make Music New York, the citywide free live musical celebration on Tuesday, June 21st.
From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., participating Harlem Park to Park businesses will become impromptu outdoor stages offering live musical performances and some select specials. A complete list of business are listed below.

Tonight, several Harlem businesses, such as Harlem Flo, The Winery, Make My Cake, Tonnie’s Minis, Aloft Hotel and Yatenga, are gathering together to “Kiss & Tell.” Well, not exactly that, but sort of! These Harlem businesses will be on hand Tuesday evening, starting at 6 p.m., to offer gift advice for Valentine’s Day. According to Harlem Flo’s Facebook site, the February 8th event will “feature unique and creative gifts items that you can purchase for your loved ones for V-day and there after.”
So if you need something for your cupid or yourself, head on over to Harlem Flo, second location at 2276 Frederick Douglass Blvd., at West 122nd Street.
