Reminder: ‘Act of Valor’ film screening February 16 in Harlem

There are still tickets available to see ‘Act of Valor’ Thursday, Feb. 16 at the Magic Johnson Theater in Harlem. The event starts at 7:30 pm. And remember this is a free event! To receive your ticket for the free screening of ‘Act of Valor, click here and enter the code HLMGAL9RBE. 

‘Act of Valor’ takes audiences deep into the secretive world of the most elite, highly trained group of warriors in the modern world. Harlem’s LeRone Wilson art opening happening at the Rush Gallery

Remember a while back we told you about sculptor and Harlem resident LeRone Wilson winning top honors at Miami’s Art Basel? He won the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series. Now there is an opportunity to see our fellow Harlemites’ art work this coming Thursday, February 9th. That’s when the art opening for LeRone Wilson is happening at the Rush Arts Gallery. You know? That’s the gallery that the Simmon’s brothers own and operate, i.e. Danny and Russell Simmons. Nice!

The LeRone Wilson show opens on Feb. 9th and will be on exhibit through March 16. It is free to attend! If you want to check out Wilson’s art opening, below are the details! See you there!

See ‘Act of Valor’ in Harlem…for Free!

We have heard a lot about the U.S. Navy Seals in the news recently. They are the ones that President Obama sent on a mission to catch and kill Bin Laden. Now there is a feature film about our Navy Seals called ‘Act of Valor’ presented by Relativity Media. The film actually stars real Navy Seals and opens February 24th. There is an opportunity to see the film in Harlem before its opening date.

See ‘125 Franco’s Blvd’ Exhibition in Harlem

Head on over to the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building in Harlem this coming weekend to see “125 Franco’s Blvd.” “125 Franco’s Blvd.” is an exhibition of Franco The Great’s timeless artwork. The exhibition is from 4-6:00 PM February 10-11th and there will be artwork for sale. The details are below, along with a brief description on Franco The Great.

Who is Franco The Great:
Over a period of 25 plus years, Franco has changed the image of Harlem by painting the security gates of storefronts on 125th Street. His work in Harlem has brought him world renown; below are some excerpts from the many news articles from around the world, written to explain the work and origin of this great artist.

The name Franco the Great came about as a result of his talent in the field of magic. Franco became so proficient in his magic skills that his teachers and peers encouraged Franco to show and teach his magic. He gained his confidence in school day by day as he connected with other people and gained new friends.

Harlem Shambles Grand Opening, you’re invited

The local butcher shop on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 115th and 116th Street is hosting its official grand opening this Thursday, December 1st. Attend Harlem Holiday Lights 2011 tonight

You are invited to the Harlem Holiday Lights Ceremony taking place this evening, November 21. The 125th Street Business Improvement District, Community Boards 9, 10, 11 and the New York City Housing Authority have partnered together for the Holiday Season to “light up” one of New York City’s, and Harlem’s, most legendary thoroughfares from river to river-125th Street! At 5:30pm, the celebration will begin with sounds and lights on the plaza of the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building. Attendees will enjoy live performances provided by legendary pioneer, producer, and publisher, Vy Higginsen, and her Mama I Want to Sing Foundation as well as the Harlem Arts Alliance and other special guests. Select Harlem business owners to run in 2011 ING/New York City Marathon

A reader and wonderful Harlemite has informed HarlemGal Inc. that two or potentially three local Harlem business owners will run in this years ING/New York City Marathon. They are Mekia Denby, co-owner of Kidberry and Ousmane, co-owner of bier international.

If you plan on watching the marathon in Harlem, specifically along Fifth Avenue, look out for these two Harlem business owners so that you can cheer them on along with the rest of the runners. They will definitely need our support as they reach this point of the marathon in Harlem. If you want to track these Harlem runners on marathon day or any other runners for that fact, go to the ING Marathon website and look for TrackMyRunners via web!

The third person we heard might be running in the marathon is Derek, co-owner of Red Rooster Harlem. However, we heard he might not run due to an injury!

If you know of any other Harlem business owners that are running in this years marathon, please let us know so that we can give them a shout out and wish them the best!

For now, let’s wish Mekia and Ousmane, Harlem business owners, all the best as they go for that medal and finish line in the ING/New York City Marathon!

Harlem Happenings: Urban Garden Center Fall Festival, La Colmenita, Halloween Pumpkin Sail

We have another Fall weekend in Harlem where there are fun things to do! On Saturday, October 22, Urban Garden Center in East Harlem is holding their Annual Fall Festival.  It starts at noon and runs to 4 p.m. with plenty of activities for friends, family and kids! Head on over to 116th Street and Park Avenue this coming Saturday!

Also on Saturday is La Colmenita! The Children’s Theater of Cuba will be performing in Harlem at the Harriet Tubman Learning Center, located at 250 West 127th Street. The show starts at 3 p.m. It is a rare U.S. appearance and its happening right here in our community. Learn more about La Colmenita by clicking here.

On Sunday, October 23, the Central Park Conservancy continues their tradition with its Annual Halloween Parade and Pumpkin Sail at the Dana Discovery Center at Harlem Meer (inside Central Park on 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues). This event starts at 4 p.m. and wearing a Halloween costume for kids is highly encouraged. Participants can also bring a carved pumpkin so that it can be a part of the pumpkin sail!

And that’s what’s happening in Harlem this weekend…all for FREE!

See Bedeviled at Casa Frela Gallery in Harlem

In addition to the Farm Festival taking place this coming weekend (October 15), there is another event to consider in Harlem. Open House New York and Casa Frela Gallery are hosting their Fall art festival called Bedeviled.
