Joe’s Crab Shack will open its first NYC store in Harlem today, line to enter started last night

20130730-083226.jpg
There is a long line at 126th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem-and it’s not for concert tickets to a show at The Apollo. Harlemites started lining up last night to be one of the first customers to dine at Joe’s Crab Shack in Harlem, which opens at 11 am today, July 30.

20130730-083032.jpgThe long line at Joe’s Crab Shack started last night. Why? The first 100 fans that dine at Joe’s on opening day will win free crab for a year. In addition to prizes for the first 100, all guests who dine at the restaurant on opening day can enter to win additional prizes.

I stopped by the new Joe’s last night for their VIP party in Harlem. The place is  very nice and huge! It’s a 10,000-square-foot restaurant on the second level at 2349 Frederick Douglass Blvd. The new Joe’s Crab Shack can accommodate 380 guests and will employ more than 200 team members from the Harlem area, according to Councilwoman Inez Dickens, who gave the figures at last night’s party.

20130730-083314.jpgI also learned an interesting tidbit about Joe’s Crab Shack. I had asked about their presence and experience in urban areas. After all, Harlem is their first location in New York City. I was pointed to a recent study conducted by New Media Metrics, which recently surveyed 3,400 African-Americans ages 13 to 64 about brand-related attachment. Joe’s Crab Shack was one of the brands in the restaurant category that made “the biggest gains in terms of positive awareness among black consumers.” Here’s an article about that study.

As for the food, unfortunately I cannot comment on the food at Joe’s Crab Shack. I arrived to the VIP party late and missed the goodies. However, I did have the opportunity to meet the executive chef and he stressed “the Harlem location will offer new summer menu promotion items, including the Corona Beach Bake and Coastal Wave Steampot featuring a wide range of lobster and crab options finished with a Corona chile-lime bath.”

I do plan to check out Joe’s Crab Shack in Harlem soon, but not today because I have this gut feeling they are going to get hit with customers like a tidal wave. Hope they came with enough crab!

Broadway Malls in Harlem restored

NYC Parks and Recreation recently announced that an eight-block stretch of the Broadway Malls in Harlem was restored from West 145th Street through West 153rd Street. The restoration project was completed six months ahead of schedule and was funded with capital allocations of $605,000 from Borough President Stringer and $91,000 from Mayor Bloomberg. The NYC Parks & Recreation was a partner as well in this project.

“The stretch of malls on Broadway between 145th Street and 153rd Street [in Harlem] were well deserving of a restoration and beautification,” said Robert Herrmann, Chairman of the Broadway Mall Association in a news release. “The Broadway Mall Association maintains almost five miles of parkland along the Upper West Side…”

A reader asks: what’s happening in East Harlem on Lexington Avenue between 100th and 101st Street?

A few days ago, a HarlemGal Inc reader wrote in asking “does your blog know what is going on with a particular block in East Harlem, i.e. Lexington Avenue between 100th and 101st Street?” According to our reader, the entire retail block is now vacant and no one in the area seems to know why? The reader adds, “this is sad to see as we really don’t have many eating options in the area [East Harlem]. Any help would be greatly appreciated!”

So HarlemGal Inc is asking on behalf of our reader, do any of you know why this particular block (Lexington Ave btw 100th and 101st Street) in East Harlem has no more retail services? What happened to the prior businesses on this block? If you have any information or leads, please chime in here! Thank you much and have a great weekend!

Salsa sensation Marc Anthony spotted today in Spanish Harlem

The Facebook page called New Yorkers Do It Better posted a picture to their page today of Marc Anthony in Spanish Harlem. According to the photo, it appears the Harlem native is filming a music video right where or close to where the salsa star grew up, 108th Street and Lexington Avenue.

What a coincidence (or maybe not) that Marc Anthony is in his old hood, East Harlem, today after this past weeks ridiculous flap over him singing the National Anthem?

Whatever the reasons are for him being in Harlem today, that’s great! However, I’m looking forward to buying his latest album, 3.0! Can’t wait!
