Harlem Happenings: Urban Garden Center Fall Festival, La Colmenita, Halloween Pumpkin Sail

We have another Fall weekend in Harlem where there are fun things to do! On Saturday, October 22, Urban Garden Center in East Harlem is holding their Annual Fall Festival.  It starts at noon and runs to 4 p.m. with plenty of activities for friends, family and kids! Head on over to 116th Street and Park Avenue this coming Saturday!

Also on Saturday is La Colmenita! The Children’s Theater of Cuba will be performing in Harlem at the Harriet Tubman Learning Center, located at 250 West 127th Street. The show starts at 3 p.m. It is a rare U.S. appearance and its happening right here in our community. Learn more about La Colmenita by clicking here.

On Sunday, October 23, the Central Park Conservancy continues their tradition with its Annual Halloween Parade and Pumpkin Sail at the Dana Discovery Center at Harlem Meer (inside Central Park on 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues). This event starts at 4 p.m. and wearing a Halloween costume for kids is highly encouraged. Participants can also bring a carved pumpkin so that it can be a part of the pumpkin sail!

And that’s what’s happening in Harlem this weekend…all for FREE!

Where to buy inexpensive flowers in Central Harlem?

There is another place in Harlem that is selling inexpensive flowers-aside from the place in Spanish Harlem I told you about last October. Fine Fare 20110829-112631.jpgSupermarket, located at 136 Lenox Avenue between 111th and 112th, sells a variety of flowers and plants for an inexpensive price. At this Fine Fare, roses are selling for $6 a dozen or two dozen for $10. Not bad. I purchased $20 dollars worth. My little casita is filled with flowers.

Check it out the Fine Fare near Central Park North if you interested in inexpensive roses. If you live in East Harlem, I buy flowers at the NW corner of 116th and Lexington Avenue. They are reasonable there as well.

Weekend Harlem Must Dos, Lido sidewalk cafe, Urban Garden Center sale and Marcus & Macy’s

There are three Harlem must dos I am recommending for this weekend. Try them out and let me know what you think!

On Friday, July 29, swing by Lido Italian Restaurant and Bar. Their sidewalk seating is in full swing. They have plenty of tables outside for Harlemites to sit and dine on. While you’re there, check out some of their summer cocktails. Here are three to consider!

20110729-124324.jpgTry Serena’s Sangria. It is made with a white wine base, passion fruit, sliced plums, and Spanish brandy. It’s hard to drink just one. Try the pitcher for $25.

Next, Lido Lemonade with lemon juice, vodka, and Licor 43 infused with thyme. The glass is garnished with a sprig of thyme. And if you need a carbonated fix, try Fiore Spumante (Italian for Sparkling Flower). It’s gin and St Germaine with champagne and a raspberry to garnish.  Also, Lido is now open Mondays and offering
$14 prix fix lunch with free wifi and complimentary iced coffee or tea!

On Saturday, July 31, head on over to Urban Garden Center in Spanish Harlem. They have a sale! They are offering 30 percent off on all in stock inventory. It ends on July 31 so drop by 116th and Park Avenue, take advantage of the sale and say hi to Dimitri, chief designer at Urban Garden Center!

And on July 31, spend Sunday afternoon with Marcus Samuelsson and the Macy’s Food Truck. Macy’s Food Truck is parking itself on 126th Street and Riverside Drive with our fellow Harlemite during Harlem Week. From noon to 4:00 p.m., Red Rooster Harlem owner and Chef Marcus Samuelsson will be on board cooking and serving catfish sandwiches with fried caper slaw and sweet potato fries!

There ya have it! Weekend Harlem must dos!

It’s Cinco de Mayo! Happy Cinco de Mayo Harlemites! Where will you be celebrating the Mexican holiday for 2011?

I still hear East 116th Street in Spanish Harlem will have a party atmosphere even though their annual Cinco de Mayo Festival passed. Check out the review by The Village Voice.

Remember this part of the City is Harlem’s booming Mexican population. So if you want to be authentic with your celebration of May 5th, no need to go far. Head on over to Spanish Harlem to celebrate. You might just see this Latina celebrating there!

It ain’t easy being green in New York City. However, it just got easier for us Harlemites! We have the Urban Garden Center right in Spanish Harlem at East 116th Street and Park Avenue. This week Urban Garden Center is celebrating its Grand Opening May 4! They are a part of La Marqueta!

For the Grand Opening, there will be drinks, rice & beans and roasted pig! And for those that want to come up for this from downtown, take the 6 train to Lexington Avenue and 116th Street or drive! Urban Garden Center offers free parking to its patrons on Park Avenue between 117th and 118th Street. Discounts will be offered as well.

So it looks like Spanish Harlem is the place to be this week, i.e. May 4 for Urban Garden Center and May 5 for Cinco de Mayo! Que suave!

There is a rose in Spanish Harlem, an abundance on East 116th Street

Oct 19, 2010 @ 16:55

By HarlemGal
Do you remember the song by Ben King called “There is a rose in Spanish Harlem?” It is an oldie, but goodie hit! We thought of this song recently when we passed by the flower stand on the northwest corner of East 116th Street and Lexington Avenue this past weekend.
This particular flower stand has an abundance of fresh roses, sunflowers, daisies and mixed flowers for sale-more so than other Bodega stands in Harlem. The flowers at this stand are all beautifully stacked and grouped accordingly where it makes the street-walker stop, look and buy. That’s what happened to us. We ended up buying two dozen colored roses for $10 and a bouquet of daisies for $5! What a deal! This stand has to be one of the least expensive places with gorgeous product in the area. We wanted to buy more flowers, such as the mustard colored sunflowers for $5 or mixed flowers for $8! However, we only had two sets of hands. We’re going back though. After our two dozen roses finish blooming!
As the song goes, there is a rose in Spanish Harlem beautiful and inexpensive, and it’s on 116th Street and Lexington Avenue.
