Pardon my French in the headline, but Russell Simmons needs some serious training in black history and he clearly should come to Harlem ASAP to pay respect to the amazing Harriet Tubman, the African-American abolitionist and humanitarian during the American Civil War, after the stunt his music label pulled. What in God’s green earth were they thinking? Read the clip here on what happened cause I’m not going to repeat Russell Simmons’ major screw up. But I do think he should do more after that error.
If you haven’t heard the latest, Russell Simmons is sorry now for the recent actions of his music label and he offered his apologies. Whatever! In my view, this screw up by Russell Simmons needs further action by him.
Lets start with…how about paying respect to this great woman by visiting the sculpture in Harlem dedicated to her, ie the Harriet Tubman Sculpture at 122nd and Frederick Douglass Blvd? Show some real respect Russell Simmons! Honor this American by visiting an area in Harlem dedicated to her! Feel free to use the visit as a photo-op too. You could use it right now.
Pay up too for this mistake. Russell Simmons should support his apology writing out a big fat check to an African-American organization of his choice that supports women. After all, if you’re truly sorry for this insult to Harriet Tubman (and all women), putting your money where your mouth/apology is will make it more authentic/PR effective. What do you say, Russell?
And last, from one yogi to another, cause those of us who practice yoga know you like this ancient Indian practice, why not distribute material on YouTube that enlightens the world, not trashes it?
Not sure where the Harriet Tubman Sculpture is located? To visit the Harriet Tubman Sculpture, take the B or C subway line to 116th Street or A or D train to 125th Street or take your limo! The sculpture stands at the crossroads of St. Nicholas Avenue, West 122nd Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem.
“I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if they had only known they were slaves” Harriet Tubman.
Ok….yeah I’m gonna park my emotional self right here on your blog and get this range of emotions out! Let me apologize in advance but 140 characters is just not enough. I watched the tape 17 hours ago and I am just as outraged, sad, hurt, disappointed, etc NOW as I was on yesterday. I’ve even tried to do many things to get the images out of my head. But I keep finding myself drawn to the twitter hashtags almost at a point of obsession. So now I’ve had to ask myself WHY has this consumed me so. First, to diminish Harriett Tubman to a “heaux” trapping massah into doing something for her. Many of us,including myself, have no idea of how beautiful black people throughout generations have helped to change the trajectory of our destiny. Her courage, honor and integrity to do something that even a man, black or white, couldn’t and somehow Russell though that was to be mocked? As a Mom I pray every day to instill in my children and model for them the importance of knowing their own worth and making sure they value others. We’re not to demean nor belittle another persons struggles, difficulties or tragedies because but for the grace of God it could’ve been us….it may be. I wonder if Russel even considered his beautiful daughters when he thought a rape tape was “the funniest thing he’s ever seen”.My son is grown and I’ve always taught him that the way you treat ANY woman should reflect how you would want a man to treat your mom and little sister. Yes we reap what we sow! I guess Russell can’t even imagine the remote possibility of any guy ever mistreating his beautiful girls😳When I saw his interview from the day before I was convinced that Russell is just a dirty old man…I don’t care how enlightened he claims to be….disgusting! Then his non-apology of “I only took it down cuz the brothers which I hang with asked me to…I’m sorry if you took it wrong”statement was drenched in his narcissism! I don’t owe black folk a dang thing. Unfortunately this is the same attitude
Of the actress in the skit and the actor. The black actress actually calls her followers “McNigglets” equipped with tshirts for sale😳. How low will we go to get noticed or make it big……Russell just demonstrated.
I know it’s long but I had to get this out.
I Love It! Thank you for this post! High five to you!
“Silly me”? That’s what Russell Simmons has to say? He clearly thought this thing was hilarious before the backlash. Shame on him.
