An inside look at Harlem’s new Cantina, a taqueria opening Labor Day evening Sept 2

Remember the blog post at the beginning of August about a new Harlem business coming to Adam Clayton Powell Jr Blvd and 111th Street? HarlemGal Inc now has confirmation on exactly what the place will be? Cantina is the name of the new restaurant on 111th and ACP.

Cantina will be serving burritos, tacos and ceviche, along with a full service bar. Starting this coming Monday evening, September 2, Cantina in Harlem will open for business and will be offering $2 tacos and $4 margaritas, according to one of the Cantina owners, who spoke with HarlemGal Inc today and happens to be involved with Harlem BBQ as well.

The price point of the Cantina menu will be below $19. One of the owners of Cantina said, “everything on the menu will be reasonable and affordable, yet everything offered will be of a high-end product.” The chef at Cantina will be coming from Dos Toros in Union Square.

Cantina in Harlem invited us in today to take a look at the place and we must say it looks very cool and comfortable. There is exposed brick and aged wood everywhere. Plus the location is perfect. It’s right by Central Park North. So when you are done with your day in the park, Cantina is one block away from Central Park North where one can purchase a fresh squeezed cucumber margarita and taquaria food. The place looks very inviting and charming. We can’t wait to check it out.

Oh by the way, Cantina was going to be called Suzy-Q and was going to offer BBQ. The owner of Cantina said they changed their strategy mid way through planning because they realized the BBQ need was already met in Harlem.

Stop by this coming Monday after 4 pm to check out Cantina in Harlem! It is on the northwest corner of ACP and 111th Street.

Things to do with kids in Harlem: Free children’s jazz concert in Harlem today, August 12

Democracy Prep Public Schools is hosting a children’s jazz concert today in Harlem starting at 6 pm. It is free and open to the 13200_574603289218386_867223293_npublic! The concert is presented by Gucci®, The Recording Academy® and the GRAMMY Foundation®. The event will be a musical cultural exchange between talented Chinese high school jazz musicians and American musicians. Below are the details:

Is Kidberry in Harlem closing?

HarlemGal Inc loves blogging about all things positive related to Harlem. However, there are going to be some instances where the Harlem news is not all roses. For example, this blog is hearing some sad news on and offline about Kidberry, a children’s education center located on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd between 122nd and 123rd Street. The rumor mill, which HarlemGal Inc is practically 90 percent sure its not a rumor based on sources, is that Kidberry in Harlem is closing its doors for good. Done. Finished, etc.

Reasons  for the closing have not surfaced…yet. Our guess is that will happen in due time. As soon as we know why Kidberry in Harlem is closing, we will pass that information along.

Now for the big questions. Where will Harlem parents take their infants and toddlers for educational classes? Is there some place else close by? Thoughts? HarlemGal Inc would love to hear your feedback? Chime in…

New Harlem business arising at ACP and 111th Street, another opens in Harlem’s Sugar Hill

When it comes down to what’s opening/coming to Harlem, leave it to HarlemGal readers to know the scoop. They provide good, credible tips and we have two tips here to pass along!

Recently, one reader commented via Twitter that “a new bar must be coming to Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd and 111th Street (1838 ACP)! A name called Suzy-Q’s has applied for a liquor license.” Hmm, sounds interesting. This blog does not have confirmation of that. However, I walked by that corner this weekend and there does appear to be some construction action happening on the northwest corner of ACP and 111th Street. If anyone knows more, feel free to chime in!

Another longtime resident of Harlem and a reader of this blog wrote in and said, “just wanted to pass a tip along of a new bar/grill called Solace at 143rd Street and Broadway. They opened on July 3 and are still awaiting their liquor license. In the meantime, they have a full menu and hookahs all set to a deep house music soundtrack. I visited on Saturday and was very pleasantly surprised!” According to Solace’s website, they offer “a comfortable dining experience featuring high quality bar cuisine with an emphasis on fabulous, fresh burgers.”

So there we have it, one new Harlem bar possibly coming to Central Harlem and another bar and grill opens in Sugar Hill.

Trunk Show Designer Consignment in Harlem celebrated their first full year of business this past weekend. They opened for business in July 2012. A big congrats to them and continued to success!

Artist supply store opens in Harlem, Artist & Craftsman Supply on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd

The talented and creative Alton Weekes tells HarlemGal Inc that a new artist supply store just opened up in Harlem on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, between 124th and 125th Street right next to where the G Lounge and Bowling Alley used to be. The exact address is 2108 ACP Blvd.

“As an artist myself, it’s good to have a place within walking distance when you run out of paint, paper and glue,” said Weekes. We couldn’t agree more, Alton. Thanks for the tip and please…keep on making your beautiful hand-crafted stationary products! We love it!

Opening Soon The Harlem Garage, a co-working space in Harlem by Tech Cocktail

HarlemGarage1To support entrepreneurship in New York, the City and Mayor Michael Bloomberg are getting behind the startup community.

In 2010, they launched a $22 million seed-stage fund, as well as the annual NYC Next Idea competition. They’re also sponsoring various incubators, from General Assembly to NYU-Poly to the newest space: HarlemGarage.

HarlemGarage, to be run by coworking space operator MicroOffice, is a 6,000-square-foot space at 118th Street in Harlem. Construction will start soon, and by late summer the space should be hosting over 100 people, as well as classes and networking events.

The space is actually a converted car garage, and MicroOffice cofounder David Rotbard hopes to keep the industrial feel, with high ceilings and exposed brick. There will be comfortable chairs for lounging, coworking tables, and no enclosed offices – just semi-private classrooms.

Unlike other coworking spaces in New York, Rotbard imagines that HarlemGarage will mostly attract local residents. He sees it as “place of gathering,” “almost like a community center,” and hopes to bring in art exhibits, live music, and local community events.

That’s consistent with the City’s goals, which include revitalizing the 125th Street corridor.

“Harlem is an area that’s been on the radar for awhile. It’s probably quadrupled in the amount of entrepreneurial residents in the past couple of years,” says Rotbard.

He’s seen restaurants and bars popping up in the area, alongside new condos and old Harlem brownstones. But there isn’t much commercial office space, he says; many residents work out of coffee shops or restaurants. With HarlemGarage, they’ll have a new office-home: just steps away from a Starbucks and nicely situated between Morningside Park, Central Park, and Columbia University.

Desks will cost around $300 per month – with discounts for women- and minority-owned businesses – and you can apply through the MicroOffice website.

Breadbox Studio in Harlem to host design event May 11

After I posted about the Harlem Focus event by Cooper-Hewitt, another design event happening in Harlem was sent in to share. On May 11, Harlem’s Breadbox Studio will be providing “a demonstration of Maker Bots and 3D Printing machines, and a talk by young TOY designers.” The event is free to the public and it starts at 6 pm.  BreadBox Studio is located at 1844 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.

High tech egg decorating at Breadbox Studio in Harlem March 30

According to Our Uptown Family, Breadbox Studio in Harlem is having a FREE BYOE (bring your own eggs) high-tech egg-decorating event for kids this Saturday, March 30, from 10 am to 3 pm.

Toy inventor (and father of two boys, ages 6 and 2 ) Joe Masibay will be using his EGGBOT machine to draw amazing designs on eggs. He’ll also have his 3D printers churning out some cute little bunny toys. Sounds like a fun time for kids and parents. See all the details below:

Support Changing Face of Harlem, film in final stretch of completion

Changing Face of Harlem, a documentary about Harlem’s ongoing transformation told from the voices of longtime residents, business owners, politicians, developers, and clergy, is in the home stretch to complete the film. This month they have launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $30,000 to meet final post-production costs. Post-production costs cover final sound mixing, edit, color correction, and costs of archival footage, graphics and music.

To help Changing Face of Harlem meet their goal, go here to donate. The campaign runs for the month of March.
