I am so out of it on fashion in Harlem, but thank goodness I checked The Times this morning. They are reporting that white t-shirts are the in thing at the moment. The New York Times strolled Apollo Theater, the Studio Museum and the shopping strip, 125th Stree, in Harlem recently and reports that “in Harlem wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and red sneakers” is sick! The sixth annual Mafrika Music Festival is scheduled for June 24 in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem. The program starts at noon and runs till 7 pm. And its FREE to the public. Enter Marcus Garvey Park at 120th street and 5th Avenue in Harlem. As always, this event has involvement from Yatenga French Bistro and Bar and ShrineNYC.
For more than 20 years the community of Mount Morris Park has been opening its doors and inviting New Yorkers and visitors from around the world to come in and see all the beautiful homes that are in Harlem. The tradition continues with the annual Mount Morris Park House Tour, which is set for June 10. The schedule is listed below and tickets are now available at the Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association. Click here to purchase tickets.
11 AM to 4 PM: Follow the Self-Guided Tour of Homes at your leisure. Guests will visit 10 venues including inside brownstone homes, urban live/work apartments and landmark churches.
1 PM and 3 PM: Join the Architectural Walking Tour and explore this historic neighborhood’s rich architectural detail and history.
Noon and 2 PM: Inside Historic Harlem begins with Yale-trained architect and historian, John Reddick.
Start your Memorial Day weekend at Harlem Food Bar, located on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 113th and 114th Street. The owner of HFB gave HarlemGal (HG) official notice yesterday that Harlem Food Bar will open its doors to the public May 25 for dinner only. HFB hours will vary over the next two weeks as will the menu offerings since this is a soft opening, however, lunch will start in the next week and brunch is planned for June 9th.

Harlem Food Bar is working hard toward its opening day, which is expected in a few weeks. Yesterday, they were busy interviewing job applicants. While they were screening potential employees, Harlem Food Bar had the entire place on display for passerby’s. When walking by HFB, which is located on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 113th and 114th Street, one can quickly see a giant colorful mural on display in the back.
The mural is very interesting and will draw you in. It has a nice big picture of Malcolm X with a picture of President Barack Obama close by. The mural has the word HARLEM in bright big red letters coupled with the name of the place abbreviated as HFB. There is a stenciled cow on the mural, which I interpret as there will be meat served. There is also a nice big bar to the right of the establishment. It will hold plenty of Harlemites who want to grab a drink or wait for a seat to eat.
Again, Harlem Food Bar expected to open in a few weeks. Stay tuned here!

For those of you that are left of center on social issues, that would mean the Big L for liberal, listen up! Drinking Liberally, a national organization that focuses on “promoting democracy one pint at a time” is launching a Harlem Chapter. And the launch party is tonight (May 16) at Lenox Lounge. After the Food & Drink Boulevard event, which is happening tonight, May 10 in Harlem, we may all need to head to the gym for a workout. Or even better, we have the option to head to Central Park North for a workout in the wide open skies of New York City! Physical Equilibrium is offering two boot camp classes starting now. I believe the classes started in late April.
Boot camp class, taught by Erika Moore and who resides in Harlem, meet Tuesday’s at 6:30 am and Saturday’s at 10:30 am at the northwest corner of 110th and Central Park North.
The class prices include:
$30 for drop in
$75 for 3 classes (expire in 2 months)
$200 for 10 classes (expire in 3 months)
$300 for unlimited attendance for 1 month

We all know Harlem has been rapidly changing in the last ten years and there is one filmmaker that I am aware of that’s been documenting our change for quite sometime. It’s Shawn Batey. Batey is the documentary filmmaker behind Changing Face of Harlem. Changing Face of Harlem takes a critical look at how Harlem has undergone its transformation.
There is an opportunity to see the film, in its current stage, which is a work in progress, Saturday early evening, May 19 at Maysles Cinema, located at 343 Lenox Avenue. Changing Face of Harlem is showing during The People’s Film Festival, a festival that “celebrates the power of the media when placed in the hands of the people.”

Spanish Harlem’s Urban Garden Center is turning one and they are celebrating in style by giving away that item which has furnished humanity with two of life’s essentials: food and oxygen. On Sunday, May 6, Urban Garden Center, in partnership with Million Trees NYC and New York Restoration Project, will be giving away 100 trees for free starting at 10 am.
To receive a free tree, register online here. Signing up with the form will ensure a tree of the species you chose and will be available between 10 am to noon on Sunday, May 6. Please note: trees will weigh between 25-50 pounds and are between 4’-10’ in height depending on species. Make the appropriate arrangements for the transportation of your tree before heading to Spanish Harlem.
And later on in the afternoon on May 6, Urban Garden Center will continue celebrating their one year anniversary with free food, refreshments, music, workshops and more. So stop on by!
