HarlemGal Inc remembers Haiti Earthquake

Jan 12, 2011 @ 0:31
By HarlemGal
I came across this powerful message below on one of my friend’s Facebook page. It’s moving, powerful and speaks for itself. It must be passed on. Let’s remember what happened one year ago today in Haiti.

At 4:53 p.m. on January 12th, 2010, more than one-quarter of a million people lost their lives in the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that sent 33 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.2 to 5.9 and left more than 3 million people in need of emergency aid. Please stop what you’re doing at 5pm on Wednesday, January 12th, 2011 to remember those who perished in last year’s devastating earthquake, and to pray for those still in desperate need of help.

Too many people have forgotten about the earthquake  in Haiti and the many lost in this tragedy. Awareness can change all of that. Invite your friends by clicking here and posting this to your profile…

Dec 30, 2010 @ 17:20
By HarlemGal
Pardon my lateness regarding this post. I have been on holiday…(still am) and have fallen behind on my blog posting. Any how, I have received several messages about our awesome neighborhood/community, ie the surrounding area of FDB, being chosen as a finalist in Curbed.com’s New York City neighborhood of the year for 2010. That is wonderful news. However, it’s quite not good enough. We need to win it! If you believe our community should win, click here to vote. My understanding is the poll is open until January 1, 2011!

I cast my vote! Did you?

Paul McCartney performs at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater to a celebrity packed crowd

Dec 14, 2010 @ 0:12
By HarlemGal
Monday night was supposed to be a quiet evening relaxing without the computer. Yeah right. The evening ended up being quite the opposite. I got sucked into the real-time online coverage of Paul McCartney playing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, December 13 – mainly on twitter. I am a huge Paul/George/John/Ringo fan so it was easy for me to drop everything.

There were a variety of tweets that came in throughout the evening giving you a sense of what was happening. Deepak Chopra seemed to have the first photo make it out of the Apollo. Then followed by Martha Stewart.

While there were several twitters telling their followers in real-time what songs McCartney was performing at the Apollo, the Examiner.com was quick – and the first to provide the complete set list right after the event was over, along with photos and a post on which celebrities attended the event.

In the end, the Examiner was topped by a subscriber on YouTube, who soon posted live audio from the event right at 11 PM on December 13, which I have posted here. Hurry up and listen to it soon …who knows how long it will last!

According to several online reports, McCartney called the Apollo Theater “the holy grail” and a place he has “dreamed of playing for many a year.” What a nice touch and respectable acknowledgement to the Apollo by McCartney. That is rock royalty at its best!

The Uptowner has shed light on the muralist who “paints winter scenes and other holiday-themed decor on storefronts across Harlem,” during the holiday season and specifically on 125th Street.  Meet Franco Gaskin, who calls himself “Franco the Great” or as others call him “Franco the Magnificent.” Watch this video! It will explain why Gaskin earns both titles!
