Harlem art mural opening celebration June 8 at 110th Street and FDB

Remember how there was a mural contest for Harlem students that would cover the fence at the northeast corner of 110th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd? Well, the contest is over and the art is up and hanging everywhere on the fence where the old gas station use to be and soon were a new condo will be in Harlem. Passerby’s can view the art by taking a stroll to this part of Harlem.

Tomorrow, Sunday, June 8 at 11 am there is a public celebration honoring all the incredible art work that was submitted for the contest. All of us are invited to attend. See details below and see you there!

Introducing 272 MA in Harlem, no fee rental apartments

More apartments to rent are coming up in Harlem! The next batch is on the corner of 112th Street and Manhattan Avenue! The building is calling itself 272 MA. And it’s represented by Nest Seekers International.

According to the signage, the building will be offering one and two bedroom apartments with no fee. Hmm? But you have to make a certain amount of income to go into the building, according to the website. And the income is on the high side if you ask me!

Harlem brownstone on 113th Street converting to luxury rental apartments

Looking for an apartment in a Harlem brownstone? It appears several will become available on West 113th Street between Frederick Douglass Blvd and Manhattan Avenue. Taking my daughter for a stroll over the weekend, I noticed a big construction sign that read “New Destination 320 West 113th Street” in front of a Harlem brownstone. And of course, the sign also included the word “luxury” so you can bet whatever apartments are carved out will be expensive. See photos below for website and phone number to inquire further.

Made in Brooklyn coffee offered at new Cafe Frederick in Harlem

Walked by the new Cafe Frederick on FDB and 114th this morning and what was outside? Free coffee! The Harlem parlor was giving out free cups of coffee for passerby’s to try. Cafe Frederick will be offering java made in Brooklyn. Stop by and try some. I certainly did!

Sign says Cafe Frederick Harlem Parlor, a new Harlem business on 114th Street and FDB

As this blog first reported, there is a new place opening on the corner of 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. It’s called Cafe Frederick Harlem Parlor and signage is up in front of the place that’s located right across the street from Melba’s Restaurant. The owners are working every day in hopes of opening by the end of the month. Stay tuned…

Are you a college-bound Harlem high school senior? Scholarship fund available, apply now

Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association, a Harlem based 501(c) (3) non-profit community organization, is looking for a college-bound Harlem high school senior! Why? The organization’s Scholarship Fund will award a $4,000 scholarship-1,000 renewable annually for four years-to a college-bound high school senior, who resides in Central Harlem from 110th Street to 135th Street, between Morningside and Third Avenues.

The application deadline is June 1 and the scholarship requirements are below. Click here to apply.

· Graduating high school seniors living in the greater Mount Morris Park/Central Harlem Community, from 110th Street to 135th Street, between Morningside and Third Avenues

· Student must have a C+ (75%) or better grade point average

· Student must have participated in a community service project

· Student must have accepted admission to a two or four-year college or university

· Student must demonstrate financial need by completing FAFSA application

Harlem Biospace launches HYPOTHEkids, a summer science camp starting in July

Harlem Biospace, a new biotech incubator that opened recently for early stage life science companies, has launched a new kid initiative called HYPOTHEkids. HYPOTHEkids, a summer science camp starting in July, was developed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and technology entrepreneurs right here in Harlem.

Limited slots are available for this eight-week summer program for K-5 children. The program is designed and taught by Columbia University-affiliated faculty and students (from Teachers College and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences). There is a theme a week and each theme will be explored through different lenses of science.

Attend No Time For Hate: May 20th Benefit for the Al Forney Center in Harlem

Harlem parents have come together to host “No Time for Hate: A Benefit Night for the Ali Forney Center at Maysles Cinema” in Harlem on May 20th. All proceeds will benefit the Ali Forney Center, a Harlem-based nonprofit that serves the LGBTQ homeless youth.

The event will be held at Maysles Cinema. Reception refreshments will be provided by Harlem restaurants Settepani and Barawine. Tickets start at $25 and go all the way up to $1000. Benefit tickets can be purchased by using the following site: harlemagainstviolencehomophobia.mydagsite.com

Things to do with kids in Harlem: Spring Festival on West 120th Street May 3

The New York French American Charter School is hosting their annual Spring event open to the Harlem community this Saturday, May 3. The street festival will offer food from around the world, two bouncy houses, games, and a plant sale. Proceeds from the spring event will benefit programming at the school. See details below.
