A skin care business will be opening soon in Harlem on 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd, according to a reader. I walked by the location recently to check it out and the signs posted on the door at 281 West 114th Street definitely say “very pretty skin?” The prior tenant in this commercial space, which is in the Douglass Condo, was a campaign office.
As soon as more details become available about the skin care clinic, we will pass along!

There are several Harlem happenings taking place this Friday evening, Jan 25. They’re lined up below for your consideration.
Casa Frela Gallery will present the works of furniture artist Yoav S. Liberman from 8-10 pm. In addition to showing Yoav’s fantastic furniture pieces, he will also speak about the art pieces currently in the gallery, as well as an informal Q&A to follow. Grammy Award-winning pianist, composer and Musical Director Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra will take the stage at the Harlem School of the Arts’ Winter Music Festival, located at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue. This will be the first of several concerts presented by O’Farrill and the members of his jazz orchestra this year. This event starts at 6:30 pm and it is FREE.
Over on the Westside, it’s Harlem Salsa at Dinosaur BBQ, located 700 125th Street. One hour salsa classes are offered from 6-7 pm. Admittance for the evening is $10. See more details in picture below.
And the Harlem Bimonthly Bar Crawl continues on Lenox Avenue starting at 9 pm. Participating establishments for the 25th include: Les Ambassades Bar & Restaurant, Harlem Corner Social, Red Rooster Harlem, Cove Lounge, and Chez Lucienne.

According to a media advisory, the TV doctors are coming to Harlem. Actually the real ones, not the TV actors who play doctors on TV. This coming Thursday, Jan 24, Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Jonathan B. Levine, who is a national oral health expert and regular contributor on “The Dr. Oz Show,” will join more than 300 kids (ages K-12) at the Harlem Children’s Zone to host a special themed event, “Brush Up Smile Zone!” The event will include a variety of fun and educational activities that spread the message about the importance of good oral health-as it relates to overall health.
Oral-B is the corporate sponsor. Through a charitable partnership, Oral-B and Dr. Levine’s GLO Good Foundation are educating Americans on the importance of having good oral health. They will be visiting select areas throughout the country. The first stop is starting right here in Harlem on January 24th.
This event is happening from 4:30 to 6 pm at the Countee Cullen Community Center, PS 194, which is located at 244 West 144th Street between Frederick Douglass Blvd and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.

Lots to celebrate this coming Monday. And if you need a place to celebrate in Harlem, Ginny’s Supper Club in Harlem, 310 Lenox Ave, is inviting us all over. In celebration of Martin Luther King Day and President Obama’s second inauguration, Ginny’s Supper Club will host two special events.
The first is an inauguration watching party at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 21st. Guests can order from Marcus Samuelsson’s acclaimed upstairs restaurant and Red Rooster Harlem, while watching a live-feed of the inauguration downstairs at Ginny’s Supper Club. In 2011, the President Obama held a swanky fundraiser at Red Rooster Harlem and in 2009, Marcus Samuelsson was chosen to cook the Obama Administration’s first State Dinner.
The celebration of Dr. King’s dream continues into the evening of January 21st, with a two-set special performance by Amanda Brown of The Voice. Brown’s performance will be complemented by excerpts of Dr. King’s iconic “I have a Dream” speech. Ginny’s small plates and playful cocktails will round out the celebratory evening. Guests can make reservations by calling 212-421-3821 in advance. There is no cover. Shows start at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

If you missed trying out Belgium waffles this past week in Harlem, there will be another opportunity! Wafels & Dinges is returning to the same spot Jan 22 in Harlem, which is right in front of Best Yet Market on Frederick Douglass Blvd. The waffle food truck is returning to Harlem after a successful night of sales this past week!
The owner tells HarlemGal Inc that if strong sales continue, the Wafels & Dinges truck will be parked on FDB every Tuesday from now on.
To purchase waffles this coming Tuesday in Harlem, walk along FDB between 118th and 119th Street. Wafels & Dinges will be there from 6-10 pm!
Walking along Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem tonight, I noticed a bunch of TV cameras inside and outside Harlem Food Bar, which is on FDB between 113th and 114th Street. This is the scoop. VH1 is at Harlem Food Bar this evening taping the Love & Hip Hop reality show.
VH1 was also at Harlem Food Bar not too long ago filming Black Ink Crew – not to mention Cedric French Bistro as well.
Harlem is even more popular with the entertainment industry. Every time you turn, the film and TV industry is in our Harlem backyard filming/taping something. Pretty cool.
As for tonight, Harlem Food Bar is open to the public, not just to the reality show, so stop on by order some food and have a drink! Cheers!

Wafels & Dinges, a Belgian food truck, just sent us an email saying they are planning a visit to Harlem tonight, Jan 14. Around 6 pm, they will be serving up some of their waffle specialties on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 118th and 119th Street.
According to their email, Wafels & Dinges serves up one of the best Belgian waffles in NYC by winning the “Best Midtown Sweet” Award for three years in a row, ZAGAT’s “Best Food Truck” in 2010 and 2011, Winner of the 2009 NYC VENDY AWARDS and a Winner of “Throwdown with Bobby Flay” on the Food Network.

Uptown Thursday Nights Comedy Series

MIST Inspirations
The first and third Mondays at MIST will be reserved for Monday Inspirations. This series will launch similarly with a headlining Gospel artist in a full MIST house, Monday, Jan 21. The bi-weekly series will then run for 16-weeks on first and third Mondays, in the center MIST Theater from 7:30-9:30 pm. Gospel artists for the series will be booked from premier local artists (tri-state) and special guests who may be in the area for other engagements and promotions. For tickets, click here.
Creatively Speaking Film Series
Creatively Speaking is a curated film series offering a diverse forum that highlights independent film by and/or about people of color. The film series began early December 2012 and will run monthly at MIST Harlem with a collection of shorts, documentaries and narrative films that tell stories that present realistic portrayals of people of color rarely seen in the media, and appeal to varied audiences, crossing multiple cultural, geographic and socio-economic divides.

This is for all the comic book fans out there in Harlem! Today from 10 AM to 4 PM, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, 
located at 515 Lenox Ave at 135th Street, is hosting The Black Comic Book Festival today, Jan 12.
The Black Comic Book Festival is a gathering for young people who enjoy reading about the rich tradition of black superheroes. The festival will feature a screening of the film “White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books”; a pop-up art exhibition of “Black Kirby”- a visual homage to the legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby by artists John Jennings (SUNY Buffalo) and Stacey Robinson; panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and exhibit tables with premiere black comic book artists from across the country. It is MulchFest Weekend Saturday and Sunday, January 12 and 13, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. And there are several Harlem locations! Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled either by drop off or chipping. Chipping locations will mash-up the tree right there and let you walk away with the mulch.
