Attend Maysles Members Night Out in Harlem

Listen up! The Maysles Institute in Harlem will be hosting an exclusive event soon for its members. It’s one you don’t want to miss if you love Cuban history as I do (see blog post on visit to Cuba). And if you’re not a member, you may want to become one to meet fellow members from the Harlem and NYC area.

Maysles Cinema, which is located at 343 Lenox Avenue between 127th and 128 Street, is having a reception for members only on Monday, October 15 at 6:30 pm. After the reception, Maysles Cinema will be screening the film titled Cuba: An African Odyssey at 7:30 pm. “Cuba: An African Odyssey explores the 300,000 Cubans who fought alongside African revolutionaries: from Che Guevara’s military campaign to avenge Lumumba in the Congo up to the fall of apartheid in South Africa. Cuba, an African Odyssey is the previously untold story of Cuba’s support for African revolutions, one of the Cold War’s most vigorous contests over resources and ideology.” Click here to watch a trailer of the film.

As mentioned,  this event is exclusive to Maysles cinema members and requires a reservation to attend. To RSVP email member@mayslesinstitute.org and to become a member go to mayslesinstitute.org/membership.

Hope to see you there!

Celebrate Albert Maysles 85th birthday with ‘What’s Happening: The Beatles in the USA’

In honor of legendary documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles’ 85th birthday and the release of his new film ‘The Love We Make’, a collaboration with Paul McCartney, Maysles Cinema will present a very special screening this coming Friday, November 18, for one night only, of the director’s cut of the Maysles’ Brothers’ documentary ‘What’s Happening: The Beatles in the USA”. Along with this special screening will be a Q&A with Albert Maysles.

“What’s Happening! The Beatles in the USA” was made in 1964 by the Maysles. It is a humorous, freewheeling and candid account of The Beatles arrival in America in February in the mid-1960s. The Maysles follow the Fab Four for five days, from the crazed JFK airport reception to unguarded moments inside the Plaza Hotel in preparation for their landmark Ed Sullivan Show appearance to their equally frenzied homecoming.

See ‘The Love We Make’ by Harlem’s own Albert Maysles, a documentary about Paul McCartney and 9/11

I received an interesting email today from the Paul McCartney Fan Club (yes, I am a huge fan) informing me that there is a documentary called The Love We Make, which is a chronicle of Paul McCartney life after 9/11. The email went on to say that the documentary is directed by Albert Maysles, a brilliant filmmaker and a long time resident of Harlem.

According to the Maysles website, Albert Maysles follows legendary rocker Paul McCartney as he prepares for the Concert for New York in the month after the 9/11 attacks, partnering with Elton John, The Who, David Bowie, Billy Joel and many more to Madison Square Garden for a night of musical healing. The film captures the legendary rock star and his desire to help NYC, the place were McCartney’s first wife Linda Eastman is from.

To see this film in New York City, there is an opportunity on September 8, but it is only for American Express credit card holders. If you have an AMEX card, click here for tickets. And then starting on September 10 at 9 p.m. ET, subscribers to Showtime to can view the documentary then and on several other occasions.

I just wish this film was showing in Harlem. Some of us might not get to see it. Not everyone has an AMEX card or Showtime.

Mr. Maysles, why not show The Love We Make at the Magic Johnson Theater or Maysles Cinema on Lenox Ave? This way Harlem has an opportunity to such a timely documentary.

Target roles out the red carpet in Spanish Harlem in honor of their first Manhattan store

Jul 21, 2010 @ 23:47

By HarlemGal

The new Target located in Spanish Harlem-and scheduled to officially open on July 25-had their red carpet premiere on Tuesday, July 20 with celebrities, industry insiders and major players from the Harlem community in attendance. Marcus Samuelsson, Thelma Golden, and Albert Maysles all attended and they live right here in Harlem. Que rico!

Psst….if you were not there, no worries. HarlemCondoLife has the chisme on the entire fiesta! Escuchanos! Here is the HCL scoop on Target’s big party July 20 held at East River Plaza, which is at 116th Street and Pleasant Avenue!

  • Ok, not only is Tyson Beckford gorgeous on the outside, its internal as well. Tyson took picture after picture with adoring fans for close to an hour. Can we clone him?
  • Our very own Harlemite Marcus Samuelsson catched up with friend  and fellow Harlemite Albert Maysles during his dish demonstration in the P-Fresh section. They both live in Harlem cause they know we are a super cool community.
  • The busiest canine on the planet took time out for pictures. Bullseye the Target dog posed politely for pictures with event revelers. The line was so long it looked like folks waiting in line to enter The Apollo Theater!
  • Models Ubah Hassan and Hollis Wakeema posing for fan photos while they compared bathing suit selections from the Target Harlem Designer collections. Samuelsson’s model wife was present as well. Too much beauty and is always constant at Harlem places like Zoma on Frederick Douglass Blvd.
  • Isabel and Rubin Toledo having a hard time deciding on which bag from their Target collection to purchase. I love handbags. Need I say more…must get one soon!
  • Makeup guru and Target design partner Sonia Kashuk shopping with her family and adding Target Harlem Designer goods and toys to her cart. I buy Kashuk’s perfume and make-up brushes all the time. Now, it will be so much easier to get!

Looking forward to shopping at Target. Want to know what the store looks like inside? Stay tuned.
