‘Growing Up Gonzales’ coming to The Poets Den Theater in East Harlem

“Growing Up Gonzales,” the dramatic comedy which had a successful run at the Jan Hus Playhouse on East 74th Street, is coming to East Harlem.  It’s a one-man play “about a Nuyorican family in the 1970s, is part stand-up, part melodrama and part cultural tourism.”

Previews of  “Growing Up Gonzales” run from October 18-21 at The Poets Den Theater in East Harlem and then a few days later the official show begins October 25. The Poets Den Theater is located at 309 East 108th Street between First and Second Avenue. Click here to buy tickets.

And if you’re interested in contributing to the community play, the production of “Growing Up Gonzales” started a campaign on Indiegogo to cover some production costs with launching the show in East Harlem. See ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ in Harlem this weekend

“Beasts of the Southern Wild ,” the fantasy drama film that Oprah Winfrey has praised and learned about from President Barack Obama, will be showing for the first time in Harlem this weekend. The film has been out for sometime showing in limited locations in New York City. However, no need to go downtown ’cause it starts playing uptown starting tomorrow, Friday, August 31.

Magic Johnson Theater, located at 124th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd., will be showing the award-winning film over the Labor Day weekend holiday. The film received the top prize at Cannes Films Festival and Sundance Film Festival. And online reviews give the film four out of five stars.

The real social networking happens at Uptown Fridays in Harlem

Save the evening date of August 24! That’s when one of the best social gatherings in Harlem is happening: Uptown Fridays at The Studio Museum Harlem featuring DJ Reborn!

It’s more than the usual soirée. It’s a chance to have mental stimulation in a cool setting. It’s an opportunity to connect with artists, curators, collectors and critics at the center of black art and culture. And it’s all happening at our Studio Museum in Harlem, which is located at 144 West 125th Street between Lenox Avenue and ACP Blvd. Start time is 7 pm.

New York Comedy Festival 2012 coming to Harlem’s Apollo Theater

The New York Comedy Festival 2012 is coming to Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater in November! There are two shows lined up in Harlem so far, according to a recent email sent out today (August 13) to subscribers.

The first show is scheduled for the evening of November 9 with comedian Aziz Ansari from the TV show ‘Parks and Recreation.’ The second show is scheduled the following evening (Nov 10) with Jim Gaffigan, who has appeared on Letterman and Conan shows many times.

See DREAMGIRLS by Harlem Repertory Theatre

Starting August 17, the Harlem Repertory Theatre will be presenting a chamber version of DREAMGIRLS in two separate theatre spaces in Harlem. It is opening its 2012 season with the classic R&B musical drama. Ten talented actor/singers will bring this dazzling rags to riches story to life in two settings: Act One will be played in the proscenium theatre at the 133rd Street Arts Center, while Act Two will be performed in the open loft space on the third floor of the same building.

Tickets for this event are $15 and $20 for general seating. Premiumn tickets cost $40. Show is suitable for children ages 8 and up. Tickets can be purchased at SMARTTIX.

Harlem School of the Arts Fall registration begins now

The good folks over at Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) sent in information yesterday notifying us that registration for Fall classes at the Harlem School of the Arts has started. It started yesterday, July 30! There is a five percent discount for students who register and pay in full by August 15.

From toddler to the inspired adult, HSA offers 5 disciplines-Music, Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts & Musical Theatre. So if you are interested in registering for Fall classes at HSA, apply online.

Harlem customers receive upgrade guide by Time Warner Cable

Has anyone living in the Harlem area noticed a slight difference with their Time Warner Cable? I noticed it on my flat screen. The user guide is different. Apparently, Time Warner Cable has introduced an upgraded guide to its TV customers in the Harlem area. Customers automatically received the upgrade about a week ago.

Here are a few tips on the new guide:

The “A” button on the remote control brings up “Find Channels,” allowing customers to find their favorite programming by category on hundreds of channels more easily.

The “B” button brings customers to a more intuitive “Search” screen, where they can look for movies or shows on both the TV schedule and among the thousands of Time Warner Cable On Demand choices available.

Intuitive on-screen prompts for using TV features like Start Over and Look Back.

The ladies from ABC’s The View will be in the kitchen soon with Harlem’s Melba Wilson, the owner of Melba’s Restaurant on 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd! On July 24, Melba returns to the morning talk show where she “will cook it up” with the ladies on The View. Way to go Melba! Details are below!

Let’s go canoeing at Harlem Meer

Not sure what to do today, Sunday (July 15) with your Harlem kid? How about taking them canoeing at Harlem Meer? It’s FREE and it is happening today in Central Park North! NYC Parks and Recreation is offering free canoeing from noon to 3 pm at Harlem Meer, which is located near the entrance of Central Park North, aka 110th Street, and Lenox Ave. If you’re coming from downtown, take the 2/3 subway line to the 110th Street subway stop.

I witnessed this a few years ago and blogged about it. It looked so much fun! Whatever you do today, have a wonderful Sunday, Harlem!

‘Soul Train’ celebration is tonight in Harlem, event seeks to create world’s largest soul train line

Go back in time tonight to an era that brought us “soul” at Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park. Harlem-based non-profit ImageNation is celebrating all things “Soul Train” this evening (July 12) in Marcus Garvey Park. ImageNation’s 10th Annual Outdoors Festival will pay tribute to the late Don Cornelius with a screening of the VH1 documentary “Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America,” as well as live performances of music from that famous era. Also, ImageNation is aiming to create the largest soul train line tonight here in Harlem. How else to pay better tribute to the man himself, Don Cornelius, than by creating one of the most famous and well-known dance lines: the soul train line? The event is FREE and starts at 7:30 pm.
