There is a free film screening October 21 at Magic Johnson Theater in Harlem of Last Vegas starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline. The free screening starts at 7 pm.

On Tuesday, October 29, the Association of Pro Bono Counsel (APBCo) will host the inaugural Small Business Legal Academy to provide free legal counseling for small businesses and non-profits at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater from 9 am to 6 pm. This one-day event will bring together corporate law firms, financial services consultants, city and state agencies, and other service providers to lead workshops and provide one-on-one legal consultations. Topics discussed will include intellectual property law, not-for-profit formation and commercial leasing legislations, among others. Spanish and French interpreters will also be available.

Harlem real estate continues to amaze me. Development continues even though the entire world feels like a quagmire, with the exception of Manhattan real estate. Look at this building in Harlem on the corner of 110th Street and Manhattan Avenue, which was an abandoned lot! It’s going up so fast and there’s not very many apartments left-unless one has a million dollars. Look at One Morningside Park’s listings! All that’s left to purchase are apartments for $1.2 to $2.2 million. And there’s no guarantee those million dollar apartments have Central Park or Morningside Park views. My guess is those apartments with great park views went first.
With this apartment building going up in this former abandoned lot, can we all agree now that Harlem is one expensive place to buy real estate? Long gone are the days of reasonable apartment deals in Harlem.

Good news to report that I want to share with you! The Village of Harlem grew by one this week! My daughter was born on October 8 at Mt. Sinai Hospital! She came into this world weighing 6 pounds 6 ounces.
Mommy and baby daughter are doing great and we look forward to this new chapter of our lives!

Harlem Lofts sent out a mass email to Harlem bloggers this morning announcing leasing is underway at 220 St. Nicholas Avenue. This is the brand new rental building at the intersection of 120th and St. Nicholas. Eleven units are being leased out starting tomorrow. Harlem Lofts is hosting an open house on Sunday, October 6 from 3-4 pm. See listings below.
Please note, in their email, Harlem Lofts says “they have met with the Owner and are waiting on their TCO, which they expect to get by Oct 15th. There is no exclusive leasing agent, they are having 3 or 4 of Harlem’s best all work towards leasing it out as co-exclusive leasing agents.”

A reader of HarlemGal Inc has provided a newsworthy tip about an East Harlem business. On October 1, the Founder and CEO of Hot Bread Kitchen (HBK), which has a presence in East Harlem through Hot Bread Almacen, received the 2013 Global Citizen Award from the Clinton Global Initiative. Jessamyn W. Rodriguez, who is also a Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone (UMEZ) Granteee, was recognized with among six other exemplary individuals who have created effective and scalable strategies that link public, private and non-profit sectors in order to bring about positive and lasting social change.
Since 2007, Hot Bread Kitchen has supported immigrant and low-income women and men through its culinary workforce and business incubation programs. UMEZ awarded HBK a $150,000 grant in 2011 to establish a retail outlet, Hot Bread Almacen, at the historic La Marqueta at 116th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem.
Since opening in 2012 in East Harlem, Hot Bread Almacen has been featured in several publications including Zagat, The New York Times, and New York Magazine. Congrats to HBK and Almacen on the accolades. And a big thanks to our reader for sending in this news for all of us to learn about!

A few weeks ago, HarlemGal Inc wrote a blog post, which was picked up by two media outlets and collected mixed comments, criticizing Citi Bike Share for allowing the film set Annie to use the bike program in Harlem, but not allowing real life Harlem residents to have the same opportunity. Ironically, we are learning today from The New York Daily News that the Citi Bike Share may now becoming to Harlem as part of Phase II.
According to The Daily News, “Community Board 10 Chairwoman Henrietta Lyle revealed Wednesday night (October 2) that Department of Transportation officials emailed her with their plans to install at least three docking stations uptown featuring the clunky blue two-wheelers. Lyle told her fellow board members that the racks-the first that would be located in Manhattan above 59th St.-would be installed on Frederick Douglass Blvd. at W. 115th St. and W. 154th St. along with one on Lexington Ave. near E. 98th St. in East Harlem.”
Kudos to Chairwoman Lyle for leaking out the information at the board meeting and for raising the question “what about the rest of the Harlem community and the bike share?”
HarlemGal Inc.’s position has been, if Citi Bike Share was good enough for a movie set in Harlem, it is good enough for real life residents of Harlem to use. The Village of Harlem should have been a part of Phase I of the program! However, if Citi Bike Share is honestly moving forward with implementing the bike share in Harlem, we’ll take it!

Look out for a traffic jam today in Harlem around The Studio Museum in Harlem, i.e. 125th between Lenox Ave and ACP! Why? Our First Lady Michelle Obama will be hosting an afternoon event at The Studio Museum in Harlem for the spouses of Chiefs of State and Heads of Government participating in the UN General Assembly, which is happening all week.
Mrs. Obama is expected to will deliver brief remarks at the event and the Dance Theatre of Harlem is planning to perform for the First Lady and her guests.
