Attend Maysles Members Night Out in Harlem

Listen up! The Maysles Institute in Harlem will be hosting an exclusive event soon for its members. It’s one you don’t want to miss if you love Cuban history as I do (see blog post on visit to Cuba). And if you’re not a member, you may want to become one to meet fellow members from the Harlem and NYC area.

Maysles Cinema, which is located at 343 Lenox Avenue between 127th and 128 Street, is having a reception for members only on Monday, October 15 at 6:30 pm. After the reception, Maysles Cinema will be screening the film titled Cuba: An African Odyssey at 7:30 pm. “Cuba: An African Odyssey explores the 300,000 Cubans who fought alongside African revolutionaries: from Che Guevara’s military campaign to avenge Lumumba in the Congo up to the fall of apartheid in South Africa. Cuba, an African Odyssey is the previously untold story of Cuba’s support for African revolutions, one of the Cold War’s most vigorous contests over resources and ideology.” Click here to watch a trailer of the film.

West Harlem’s Morningside Heights to get its own glossy magazine

Read all about it right here. You’re the first to learn that Morningside Heights, a section of Harlem located on the Westside, is getting their own general interest magazine reporting on all aspects of living in the area. The magazine will be named…Morningside Heights (of course) and plans to profile “local people, business owners, restaurant reviews, calendar of events, trends, and ideas that capture the spirit of life in Morningside Heights” in West Harlem.

The publication debuts in December and will be mailed to 5,000 residents of Morningside Heights. Interested to know more about Morningside Heights magazine, email morningsideheights@hibu.com.

Harlem to star in Lenox Avenue, a web series

The Huffington Post reports today that actor and filmmaker Al Thompson is working on a digital series “that showcases Harlem’s influential culture” in Lenox Avenue. According to the article, Lenox Avenue is centered on three friends as they navigate through the challenging dating scene in Harlem, which is a lot of territory to cover when it comes to “looking for the one.” And Mr. Thompson is from Harlem (born and raised), so he’s been witnessing its change and felt it was time for Harlem to be depicted in a positive light on the web other than the stereotypical TV series or films we have seen in the past, such as New Jack City or New York Undercover.

‘Growing Up Gonzales’ coming to The Poets Den Theater in East Harlem

“Growing Up Gonzales,” the dramatic comedy which had a successful run at the Jan Hus Playhouse on East 74th Street, is coming to East Harlem.  It’s a one-man play “about a Nuyorican family in the 1970s, is part stand-up, part melodrama and part cultural tourism.”

Previews of  “Growing Up Gonzales” run from October 18-21 at The Poets Den Theater in East Harlem and then a few days later the official show begins October 25. The Poets Den Theater is located at 309 East 108th Street between First and Second Avenue. Click here to buy tickets.

And if you’re interested in contributing to the community play, the production of “Growing Up Gonzales” started a campaign on Indiegogo to cover some production costs with launching the show in East Harlem. Harlem Happenings: Studio Museum Harlem, Corner Social and Sundae Sermon

It’s the weekend in Harlem! A lot is happening starting tonight with Uptown Fridays at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Read here for more information.

Then on Saturday (Aug 25), Corner Social on Lenox Ave and 126th is hosting a special pre-fix brunch from noon to 6 pm with live music and free cocktails from noon to 1 pm.

And on Sunday (Aug 26), its time to let loose by dancing the afternoon away at Sundae Sermon in Morningside Park.

Harlem School of the Arts offers Free Class Week

Listen up parents! The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) will be offering Free Class Week beginning Tuesday, September 4th thru Saturday, September 8th. Free classes will be offered in music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and musical theatre for all ages.

The HSA Free Class Week is open to the public and free classes are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.  HSA Free Class Week culminates with HSA Parent Orientation for all parents of registering students on September 8th at 10am (for ages 2-8) and 2pm (for ages 9-17). All interested participants should go to the HSA website for more information.

Additionally HSA will be holding open auditions September 11 and 12, Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30 pm–7:00 pm for students Grades 3-8 who wish to participate in Disney’s The Lion King KIDS and The Lion King JR (its children’s version of its landmark Broadway musical) being held at HSA October 1 – March 18 culminating in student performances. Call backs will be held September 13.

The Harlem School of the Arts is located at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue @ W. 141st Street. Close to A, B, C and D subway trains to 145th Street or M3 bus to 141st Street.

The real social networking happens at Uptown Fridays in Harlem

Save the evening date of August 24! That’s when one of the best social gatherings in Harlem is happening: Uptown Fridays at The Studio Museum Harlem featuring DJ Reborn!

It’s more than the usual soirée. It’s a chance to have mental stimulation in a cool setting. It’s an opportunity to connect with artists, curators, collectors and critics at the center of black art and culture. And it’s all happening at our Studio Museum in Harlem, which is located at 144 West 125th Street between Lenox Avenue and ACP Blvd. Start time is 7 pm.

Tickets to Uptown Fridays are $15 for Studio Museum members and $20 for non-members. Admission includes a guided gallery tour of one of our current exhibitions, dancing in the courtyard and cocktails! Take the 2, 3, A, B, C, D @ 125th subway train!

New York Comedy Festival 2012 coming to Harlem’s Apollo Theater

The New York Comedy Festival 2012 is coming to Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater in November! There are two shows lined up in Harlem so far, according to a recent email sent out today (August 13) to subscribers.

The first show is scheduled for the evening of November 9 with comedian Aziz Ansari from the TV show ‘Parks and Recreation.’ The second show is scheduled the following evening (Nov 10) with Jim Gaffigan, who has appeared on Letterman and Conan shows many times.

See DREAMGIRLS by Harlem Repertory Theatre

Starting August 17, the Harlem Repertory Theatre will be presenting a chamber version of DREAMGIRLS in two separate theatre spaces in Harlem. It is opening its 2012 season with the classic R&B musical drama. Ten talented actor/singers will bring this dazzling rags to riches story to life in two settings: Act One will be played in the proscenium theatre at the 133rd Street Arts Center, while Act Two will be performed in the open loft space on the third floor of the same building.

Tickets for this event are $15 and $20 for general seating. Premiumn tickets cost $40. Show is suitable for children ages 8 and up. Tickets can be purchased at SMARTTIX.

Harlem Wine Gallery presents second art series with Brian Kirhagis

In honor of Harlem Week, the Harlem Wine Gallery, located at 752A St. Nicholas Avenue at 148th Street, will host a series of tasting events including a special reception for contemporary artist Brian Kirhagis, and a special community based event featuring other Hamilton Height businesses.

The Brian Kirhagis event will be held August 10 from 6-9 pm. Kirhagis will paint live during the tasting event.

Kirhagis is from Baltimore and considered one of New York’s most exciting young talents, according to a news release provided by Harlem Wine Gallery.
