Black Comic Book Festival happening today at the Schomberg in Harlem

This is for all the comic book fans out there in Harlem! Today from 10 AM to 4 PM, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, blacksupermen_1located at 515 Lenox Ave at 135th Street, is hosting The Black Comic Book Festival today, Jan 12.

The Black Comic Book Festival is a gathering for young people who enjoy reading about the rich tradition of black superheroes. The festival will feature a screening of the film “White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books”; a pop-up art exhibition of “Black Kirby”- a visual homage to the legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby by artists John Jennings (SUNY Buffalo) and Stacey Robinson; panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and exhibit tables with premiere black comic book artists from across the country. Harlem’s Democracy Prep Public Schools to host ‘Inauguration of a DREAM’

This January 21st, Democracy Prep Public Schools, which operates six charter schools in the Harlem area, will be hosting “Inauguration of a DREAM: a Celebration of Education, Service, and Democracy” from 10 am to 4 pm at the Harlem Armory. This event is free and open to the public. It will feature live music, guest speakers, food, door prizes, and community service opportunities to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This event will coincide with the second Presidential Inauguration of President Barack Obama.

East Harlem school to lead peaceful march in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr

On Monday, January 21, 2013 at 10 a.m., Manhattan Country School, located at the base of East Harlem on East 96th Street, will lead a peaceful and inspirational march through the streets of New York City in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Having chosen the route and theme of the march themselves, MCS eighth grade students will stop at several points along the march route to give public speeches they have written addressing contemporary civil rights issues. This year’s march theme is “In 25 Years: Reflecting on the Civil Rights Struggles of the Past, Looking Toward Justice for Tomorrow.”

The public is invited to attend and can join at the beginning of the march or meet along the route to hear student speeches, sing freedom songs, and participate in a unique event that is educational and uplifting.

Ring in 2013 at Lido Italian Restaurant and Bar in Harlem, see menu

I am sure most of our Harlem restaurants will be doing something special to ring in the New Year. Lido Harlem, located at 117th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd., is ready to share their plans and this is what will be happening. Lido Harlem is offering four course prix fixe. It includes a champagne toast for $70 plus tax and service. There will also be a three course for $55 plus tax and service. That will also include a champagne toast.

Lido Harlem plans on creating a social atmosphere so they are not doing two seatings because they want to keep it fun and casual. Reservations are required, except at the bar. If you plan to sit at the bar, it is recommended to go early.

Mark your calendar: Second Harlem Pop Up event happening December 15

On popular demand, Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance Association is back with another local event. This time its focused on the Holidays and its indoors. If you recall, a few weeks ago FBDA successfully executed the first Harlem Pop Up Greenmarket. It was a hit! Now their second event is going to take place from 12pm – 6pm on Saturday, December 15th at 2280 Frederick Douglass Blvd between 122nd and 123rd in the large vacant commercial space. There will be several local restaurants serving food, such as Lido Harlem, Harlem Tavern, 5 and Diamond Harlem, Zoma, Chocolat, along with local businesses like Land Yoga and Harlem Skin Clinic. A reader recently commented on this site saying, how could you as the blogger list all the holiday events happening at Harlem’s Apollo Theater on 125th Street and not mention the Double Dutch Classic? This reader is  absolutely right. Major snafu on my part. So I am correcting my error and here is the info.

Tomorrow, December 2, the 21st Annual Double Dutch Holiday Classic will take place at the famous Apollo Theater. The event starts at 1 pm and tickets are $22, not including tax or service charge. Click here to purchase tickets.

Harlem’s Apollo Theater recently announced their holiday schedule for December and its packed with a variety of fun events for all ages! And some of the events are free. See list of events below:

Saturday, December 15th – 2pm -6pm
Coca-Cola Winter Wonderland
The Apollo and Coca-Cola are partnering to bring the magic of the Holiday season to Harlem. Under the Apollo’s iconic marquee, Coca-Cola will offer a variety of holiday-themed activities and performances free and open to the public. The festivities include picture taking with Santa Claus, giveaways and performances by two of New York City’s best choirs, ARC Gospel Choir and Refining Faith. Additionally, in the spirit of giving, the Apollo will be a designated location for a toy drive benefiting HELPUSA, a non-profit dedicated to providing housing and the supportive services necessary for the homeless. Hosted by Billy Mitchell, Apollo Theater historian and tour director. This event is free and open to the public

My Image Studios Harlem officially opens November 28, view upcoming events


The New York Times reports today (Nov 26) that MIST Harlem, aka My Image Studios, located at 40 West 116th Street will open Wednesday, November 28. MIST Harlem is the “20,000 sq. ft. cultural entertainment center that features a 130-seat restaurant (Harvist) and three performance spaces presenting the best in film, live music, spoken word, comedy and more-performed by top established and emerging black & Latino artists from around the world.” Here’s an immediate list of upcoming events , which starts tomorrow, November 27. Special private screening and Q & A for the NY Women in Film and Television of Sundance Award winning director Ava DuVernay film, Middle of Nowhere.

11/28 Otelo Film Premiere
Otelo Burning directed by Sara Blecher, an award-winning documentary director and producer. Somewhere between City of God and Blue Crush, the film tells the story of a group of township kids who discover the joy of surfing. Filmed in Zulu with English subtitles, the film also includes music from South African Hip Hop artist Reason.
