Is Harlem Skin Clinic moving into former ModSquad space on FDB?

Happy New Year Harlem! Hope everyone had a fabulous holiday!

We are back in Harlem after two weeks away and we noticed some activity outside the commercial space where ModSquad, the bicycle shop, use to be, which was on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 114th and 115th Street. We asked the folks standing outside whose moving in? We were told Harlem Skin Clinic. This business has been house inside Land Yoga space since the Ashantga center opened more than two years ago. Looks like they are branching out and getting their own space. Good for them and continued success!

Adorable hat store opens on 116th Street in Harlem, Shatzi Life offering holiday discount

First it was restaurants opening in Central Harlem. Then coffee shops followed. The next trend seems to be hat stores! A new hat store recently opened at 139 West 116th Street in Harlem called Shatzi Life. They sell everything from hard hats to scarves and gloves to snowboarding hats for adults and kids. It is a very cute place! I bought a cute reindeer hat for my daughter and a Coal hat for me. Coal hats are made in Seattle, WA!

If you need a unique gift for someone, this boutique hat store is a nice option to consider for shopping! Here is their website as well!

Marcus Samuelsson’s next restaurant opening? Harlem’s restaurant row says NYT

While we were all enjoying our Thanksgiving holiday, Harlem’s celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson decided to break news to The New York Times that week about his next restaurant opening in Harlem, which will be where else….but on Harlem’s restaurant row, aka Frederick Douglass Blvd. from 110th Street to 125th. The actual location will be on the southwest corner of 116th Street and FDB–right by Harlem Tavern and Silvana. The name will be Streetbird Rotisserie. His first Harlem establishment is Red Rooster. All the info above was confirmed by his PR rep.

When I learned of this news, the things that came to mind was why not open a place on FDB to begin with? And why open a restaurant there now?

Opening is set for Spring 2015, which in the restaurant business means Summer or Fall 2015!

So much for that diner my readers keep asking for! It ain’t happening.

Why Harlem should shop Black Friday at DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse on 125th Street

There is one big company, which has a presence in Harlem, that is making a bold statement by being a leader and not a follower. DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse has decided to remain closed on Thanksgiving Day and not follow the insanity that’s typically been happening over the years, which is to open ahead of Black Friday, Americas’ annual holiday shopping frenzy the day after Thanksgiving.

The CEO of DSW made the decision to not be open on Thanksgiving Day because he believes their workers should be home celebrating with family. Another translation: putting people first ahead of some measly revenue generated a few hours before Black Friday!

This blog couldn’t agree more with DSW’s position and plans to shop Black Friday at DSW Shoes in Harlem. HarlemGal salutes DSW Shoes for their recent decision to stay closed on Thanksgiving Day 2014 and is asking its readers to join this blog in acknowledging DSW online or with your pocket book on Black Friday. Let the holidays begin!

Love a big gulp? 7-Eleven opening its first location soon in Central Harlem

We learned yesterday via a news release that 7-Eleven is coming to Harlem. New Street Realty Advisors, LLC recently announced that 7‐Eleven has leased approximately 2,300 sq. ft. of ground floor retail space at 256 West 116th Street. The commercial space is situated on the south side of West 116th Street between Frederick Douglass Boulevard and St. Nicholas Avenue.

7-Eleven will take immediate occupancy of the lower and first level space and anticipates an opening in early 2015. This means Africa Kine Restaurant is either moving to another location or closing. This blog reported earlier that Kennedy’s Fried Chicken was moving to the corner where a bodega use to be on 116th Street and FDB.

The picture below shows the exact location of where 7-Eleven will be located.

View rendering of new Harlem condo going up on 110th and Central Park North

The gas station that was located on 110th Street and Central Park North in Harlem is completely gone and a rendering of what’s to go in that space is up! Take a look. Market rate apartments will be offered starting in the winter 2017. Stay tuned.

Melba’s Restaurant in Harlem to host Sunday gospel brunch on 125th Street

We just learned today that Melba’s 125, same owner as Melba’s Restaurant, will be offering all you can eat buffet Gospel Brunch in Harlem, every Sunday starting November 16th. For only $19.99, guest will enjoy good food and music.

Melba’s 125 is conveniently located at the Harlem State Office Building, which boasts a panoramic view of the historic 125th street shopping district.

Corner bodega in Harlem to become new home for Kennedy Fried Chicken and Pizza

If you’re wondering what’s up with all the construction around the southeast corner space at 116th Street and
Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem, it’s rumored to be the new home of next door Kennedy Fried Chicken and Pizza. Apparently, they want more space and prominent location.

This should please my mother and nanny. They love this place for its inexpensive hamburgers and fried chicken. It’s also a place with good ethics. My daughters’ nanny left her wallet in there a few months ago unknowingly. My babysitter thought she left her wallet somewhere else. Fast forward to several months later, my nanny walks into Kennedy’s to purchase food and the owner says to her, “where have you been? I have something of yours!” It was my nannys’ wallet with everything intact, cash, credit cards and metro card, etc.

For my daughters first birthday party, I made sure to buy all the boxes of pizza from there! Good work ethic and decent food, deserves good business.

I received an invite today to come visit Lo Lo’s Seafood Shack in Harlem! It offers Caribbean Street Food. To be honest, I had no clue another restaurant opened on West 116th in Harlem! Here’s the menu and their website. I plan on checking it out! Hope to see you there!

Harlem business owner marries beau in Harlem made dress

Some of us love Harlem so much we try to integrate our community into almost everything. Take for example, Harlem business woman Susannah Koteen, who co-owns Lido Italian Restaurant and Bar on Frederick Douglass Blvd. Susannah married Mark Sweeney, a skilled contractor, this past weekend in New York City and this blog learned she had her wedding dress made right here in Harlem for the special occasion. How cool is that?

Apparently, Penny Babel, a seamstress who lives in Harlem, made Susannah’s wedding dress and she does all sorts of custom jobs. Babel has her studio at 220 Manhattan Avenue and 110th Street. If you need a wedding dress, specially made or a custom outfit, Babel is available. Her phone number is 212.879.5844. No need to go far for special clothing!

Susannah will continue her career at Lido Harlem, and she and her husband will reside in Harlem, which means we gain a contractor in Harlem! If you need a contractor, Mark Sweeney is available. Sweeney has a contracting business with his business partner Mustapha Diop. The business is called M & M Property Services and their website is Ionanyc.com. They do all types of jobs for commercial and residential from gut renovations, kitchens and bathrooms, custom cabinetry, and home repairs.

So if you’re dining at Lido anytime soon, be sure to say congrats to Susannah. We certainly will. Wishing her and Mark all the best and many, many years of good health and happiness. Cheers!
