Silvana in Harlem to offer side walk seating starting August 7

imageThere’s nothing better than sipping a nice cup of coffee from Silvana in Harlem together with a pita egg sandwich and some tasty fried cauliflower. Yummy! Actually, what would make that treat better is being able to sit outside and people watch. And that’s we are all going to be able to do soon at Silvana in Harlem. Starting tomorrow, August 7, Silvana will offer outdoor/side-walk seating. There will be red chairs and silver tables waiting for us to enjoy!

So if you’re in the area, stop on by and check out Silvana’s side-walk seating in Harlem. They are located on 116th Street between Frederick Douglass Blvd and Manhattan Avenue! See you there!

Harlem’s restaurant row, aka Frederick Douglass Blvd., getting another coffee shop

New restaurants have been the trend on Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem for the last five to six years. Now it appears coffee shops are the next big thing. Another coffee/cafe shop is opening up on FDB between 114th and 115th Street on the east side of the block, according to a worker on site. Several workers are hammering away prepping the place for a cafe.

This will be the fourth coffee shop to open on Harlem’s restaurant row. Already in place are Silvana, Double Dutch, and Cafe Frederick. Oh…and there’s that big company on the same boulevard too. Stay tuned!

Made in Brooklyn coffee offered at new Cafe Frederick in Harlem

Walked by the new Cafe Frederick on FDB and 114th this morning and what was outside? Free coffee! The Harlem parlor was giving out free cups of coffee for passerby’s to try. Cafe Frederick will be offering java made in Brooklyn. Stop by and try some. I certainly did!

Sign says Cafe Frederick Harlem Parlor, a new Harlem business on 114th Street and FDB

As this blog first reported, there is a new place opening on the corner of 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. It’s called Cafe Frederick Harlem Parlor and signage is up in front of the place that’s located right across the street from Melba’s Restaurant. The owners are working every day in hopes of opening by the end of the month. Stay tuned…

Harlem Biospace launches HYPOTHEkids, a summer science camp starting in July

Harlem Biospace, a new biotech incubator that opened recently for early stage life science companies, has launched a new kid initiative called HYPOTHEkids. HYPOTHEkids, a summer science camp starting in July, was developed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and technology entrepreneurs right here in Harlem.

Limited slots are available for this eight-week summer program for K-5 children. The program is designed and taught by Columbia University-affiliated faculty and students (from Teachers College and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences). There is a theme a week and each theme will be explored through different lenses of science.

Frederick Cafe Bistro closes, new coffee shop to open and be named Cafe Frederick

There’s brown butcher paper covering the windows in Harlem of what was Frederick Cafe Bistro at 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. Why? Because the place is currently being renovated as a new coffee shop. Frederick Cafe Bistro no longer exists. Yup. HarlemGal learned this recently. The owners of bier international, which owned Frederick Cafe Bistro, apparently sold their rights to the commercial space on the Northeast corner of 114th and FDB to new management. We don’t why they did this and we don’t know the name of the new management yet, however what we do know is that these new owners are currently renovating the space as a new coffee shop and it will be called Cafe Frederick.

This is the same space that housed Society Cafe and will now have its third business on this Harlem corner. As more information becomes available on Cafe Frederick, we will pass along.

Update: Lighthouse Fish Market aiming to open in May in Harlem

This past week we told you about a fish market opening in Harlem on 131st Street and FDB. We have more details. The name of the place will be Lighthouse Fish Market. It will be offering fresh fish with the option to have it steamed, grilled or broiled, seasonal veggies, and side orders available will be Mac n cheese, candid yams, and greens with traditional shrimp and grits on Sundays. Also, Lighthouse plans to have chef specials throughout week.

If all goes as planned, the place will open in mid to late May at 131st Street and FDB.

Looking to try acupuncture or need an acupuncturist close by in Harlem? There is a new clinic called Harlem Chi Community Acupuncture and it’s located at 360 West 125th Street, 2nd Floor. Harlem Chi Community Acupuncture had their grand opening on April 12.

Harlem Chi’s mission is to make acupuncture and Chinese Medicine accessible to more people and to reveal the power of this medicine to help with a variety of acute and chronic health issues-particularly when it is practiced as part of a general maintenance routine.

Not sure what to do this coming weekend for Easter in Harlem? Here are two options happening in Harlem to consider:

There is a Harlem Easter Egg Hunt happening this Saturday, April 19, at My Gym at 258 St. Nicholas Avenue for children ages 1-7. The event is free. There will be fun games and the Easter Bunny will be present for photos. The organizers are asking for interested participants to register online. To register, visit: www.HarlemEggHunt.com

Date: Saturday, April 19, 2014
Time: 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Place: My Gym – 258 St. Nicholas Ave
Cost: FREE

On Easter Sunday, April 20, at 2:00 pm, Harlem Shake will be partnering with Susie Q, a local celebrity fitness trainer and clothing designer, to offer guests an afternoon of line dancing, an Easter egg hunt, plus prizes and good food. Harlem Shake will be serving two Easter themed milkshakes on Easter Sunday. The Funny Bunny is a hazelnut chocolate shake with a chocolate Easter bunny hidden inside, or the Kool Peeps, a pistachio flavored shake topped with Peeps candy. Signature items from the regular menu like specialty burgers, fries and shakes will also be available for purchase.
