100 free tree giveaway October 28 in East Harlem

Urban Garden Center in East Harlem is at it again. Can you believe it? They’re giving away 100 free trees October 28! They did this in May as well. The nerve of them giving away something that is soooo good for us-sarcastically speaking! We need to clone Urban Garden Center at 1640 Park Avenue at 116th Street.

Seriously. If you want a tree for free, register here, which is highly recommended because most trees are claimed in advance, and then head on over to East 116th and Park Ave between 10 am to 2 pm to pick up your tree!

In the News: Victoria Theater Development Project in Harlem moves closer to reality

The Victoria Theater Project is moving closer to becoming a reality. On September 26, Real Estate Weekly reported that Danforth Developers, the developers behind the project, picked Aufgang & Subotovski as the designers of the commercial and residential project. The article also states that construction is “slated to begin early next year.”

Fast forward to this week and we have the Globe St. And The New York Observer reporting that there are more changes to the design plans. The Empire State Development Corporation approved plans for two 26-story towers: a 230-unit apartment tower and a 210-room hotel versus the previously planned 140-unit rental tower and 175-room hotel.

So in 2014 or 2015, West 125th Street will have two new towers that will be the tallest buildings in Harlem. Stay tuned.

Save the Date: East Harlem Harvest Festival happening October 26-27

Central Harlem just completed its Harvest Festival. Now its time to plan for East Harlem’s Harvest Festival taking place at 116th Street and Park Avenue. I believe its the first one and organizers are making sure it lasts all weekend.

On October 26, a celebration of culture and cuisine is planned. How to make you’re own brewski is on the agenda at the Urban Garden Center and Sugar Hill Beer is involved. That will be good and those 21 years and older can participate. A Hookah Lounge will be set up thanks to Kiosk Restaurant, a delightful Moroccan restaurant in East Harlem. And for children, the East Harlem Harvest Festival will be planning a Recycling Game, pumpkin carving and a class on how to make healthy food provided by Culinaria Festival!

So no need to worry about making plans for the weekend of October 26-27. Head on over to the eastside of Harlem for their Harvest Festival. See you there.

Inside Maya Angelou’s Mt. Morris Park home by The Wall Street Journal

The Mount Morris Park area of Harlem is home to several famous people. One of them is Maya Angelou, an American author and poet. The Wall Street Journal takes us inside Maya Angelou’s Harlem brownstone in a recent article.

As expected, Angelou’s brownstone has most of the original detail on display. Its colorful and gigantic! Her Harlem home is 3,500 square feet with 14 rooms. She also showcases on her walls works of well-known African-American artists, such as Romare Bearden, John Biggers and Charles White.

The interesting tidbit in the article is apparently Maya Angelou owns an apartment building 10 blocks away from her Mt. Morris Park home. She bought the building as an investment back in 2004. Imagine living in that building? Your landlord is Maya Angelou! How cool is that?

It’s a charming, Latino-owned, corner cafe that offers fair trade coffee, soft drinks, lemonade, fresh-baked pastries, omelets, salads and sandwiches. And on Yelp, they get 4 out of 5 stars on 20 reviews submitted.

Astro Row Cafe also has special events, such as Flamenco and Paella Sunday’s that offer all you can eat paella and sangria for $25. And for those of us who are computer nerds and take their gadgets with them, Astor Row Cafe in Harlem offers free WiFi.

More information has come in regarding the pop-up farmers market planned for October 11 at The Harlem Treasure Chest. According to a flier, this event is being organized by the Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance, Grow NYC Green Market and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. It starts at 4 pm and ends at 9 pm on the corner of 117th Street and FDB. Prepared food will be provided by 5 and Diamond Harlem, Lido Harlem and Harlem Tavern. The Harlem Treasure Chest to host several pop-up farmers markets, first one Oct. 11

HarlemGal Inc received notice this morning from the organizers of The Harlem Treasure Chest, the local flea market that set up shop in the Spring on 117th Street and Frederick Douglass, announcing they will host its first (of hopefully many to come) pop-up farmers market on Thursday, October 11 from 4 pm to 9 pm. In their announcement, there was no mention of which vendors will participate. They only mentioned free food, wine tasting, live music and organic produce would be on hand for the evening event.

The Harlem Treasure Chest is located at 2171 Frederick Douglass Blvd and they’re generally open all day Saturday and Sunday.

Update on The Harlem Pearl

This past weekend, HarlemGal Inc was the first blog to introduce The Harlem Pearl, a four-day to go detox plan, which will be located at the old newspaper kiosk on 112th and Frederick Douglass Blvd. There was a lecture planned for this evening, October 2, at 5 and Diamond Harlem. However, that event has been cancelled. The organizers of the event have provided additional information on the Plan in the interim, such as a complete description of the Plan along with an Aging and Reactive Foods List.

The Harlem Pearl will be opening soon. So stay tuned for more information.

Where to watch 2012 Presidential Debates in Harlem?

The first political boxing match, aka Presidential Debates, is happening this Wednesday, October 3, and so far two establishments have reached out to HarlemGal Inc. announcing they will be showing the 2012 Presidential Debates on the big screen at their establishments.

The Harlem4Obama organization will be hosting a viewing party at the Corner Social located on 126th Street and Lenox Avenue. So if you want to watch President Obama verbally take down Gordon Gekko, aka Mitt Romney, head to the Corner Social!

Over on Frederick Douglass Blvd., Harlem Food Bar, one of the new dining establishments on Harlem’s restaurant row, will be showing all three debates this month at their 2100 FDB location, starting this Wednesday, Oct. 3rd at 9 pm. And Harlem Food Bar will also be having an Election night party. So mark your calendar for November 6.

I have a feeling more Harlem dining establishments will host Presidential Debate viewing parties. If you’re aware of more viewing parties happening in Harlem, please chime in!

Putting the boxing terminology aside and name calling, this is a serious matter. HarlemGal Inc. encourages all Harlemites, no matter which political party affiliation, to watch all the 2012 Presidential Debates. And more importantly, do not forget to get out and vote on November 6, 2012. See you at the polls!
