Lido Italian Restaurant & Bar to open in February

Looks like the space at 2168 Frederick Douglass Blvd will continue to be an Italian restaurant based on these photos! I walked over to the corner of FDB and 117th Street this morning after a follower on Twitter was the first to tip us off last night (Friday) tweeting that a sign was up on the old Frizzante space confirming the name and opening date. Messages were later left in our feedback inbox! As always, a big Harlem thanks to those individuals that reached out to us! Keep those tips coming in!
In conclusion, Harlemites still have a restaurant on that corner. The cuisine is the same. Let’s just hope the interior and exterior changes are better managed than their predecessors! We will soon find out!

Red Rooster Harlem serves up ‘The Lunch Tray’

It is a snow day for most of us and if you forgot to stock up the fridge, like I did, what should one do for lunch today, tomorrow or next week? Hmmm. Since lunch and brunch are now being offered at Red Rooster Harlem, I am gonna head on over to 310 Lenox Avenue for “The Lunch Tray.” “The Lunch Tray” is a tasty prix fixe special that offers three courses for $17. It starts today and will be available during lunch service, Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Check out today’s menu. And see you at Red Rooster Harlem!

Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Blvd wins 2010 Curbed Cup Neighborhood of the Year

We won it! Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Boulevard has been named 2010 Neighborhood of the Year by Curbed.com. Yes! Congrats to FDB!

And might we respectfully add, winning the Curbed Cup brings sweet vindication and acknowledges what we have been saying all along, this area is hot! Go back to November 19, 2008 on this site. We predicted that FDB was headed to restaurant row status. Then a year later HarlemCondoLife.com, was the first to use the term “gold coast” to describe the FDB area!

Since our inception in 2008, we have taken some serious blows via blog post comments about focusing on this area. At times it was hurtful and hard not to take personal. However, we looked to our core beliefs and said “blog about your Harlem experience” and this area kept coming forward in our words! Despite these feelings, we emphatically have to state “We love every inch of Harlem.”

And to those who knocked us for believing in FDB, we say “truth is generally the best vindication…” Next up for FDB, New York Magazine!

Harlem’s Les Ambassades featured in The Wall Street Journal

According to today’s article in The Wall Street Journal, one’s palate can go global in Harlem at Les Ambassades, located at 2200 Frederick Douglass Blvd. Or should the article state going glocal, not global? For those of us who have lived in Harlem for several years, or longer, know that Les Ambassades is an international hangout that offers fabulous breads, pastries and authentic West African dishes. Our favorites are the Steak au Poivre, Salad Nicoise, and their homemade single-size Creme Brulee. We’ve also gone in for a cup of coffee to go and the java of the day is much better than that other place right across the street.

Beer tasting at Harlem’s bier international

The holidays are over. However, the fun can continue! Bier international is starting off the first work week of the year with a beer tasting by a local  Brooklyn micro brewery called Six Point. Go by bier international this evening (January 3) from 5 PM to 8 PM and taste a selection of brewski from Six Point. In addition, guests will have an opportunity to talk to a brewery representative about the art of beer making! So if you’re looking for something fun to do on a Monday night, head on over to bier international in Harlem! Cheers and Happy New Year!

Kuti’s in Harlem named inexpensive restaurant that stood out in 2010

After a few days off for the holidays, I am still catching up on my reading about Harlem. Today, I stumbled across this article about low-budget restaurants that stood out in 2010. Out of 15 restaurants listed by The New York Times, Kuti’s, located in Harlem at 355 West 116th Street, was named one of “the best of casual restaurants reviewed in 2010 proved that delicious doesn’t have to mean expensive.”

Kuti’s opened up in the first business quarter of 2010 (March) and is owned by Abdhul Traore, who also happens to be the chef!

Congrats to Kuti’s in Harlem and Mr. Traore on the accolade. May there by many more!

I was walking by Frizzante this evening at
2168 Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem and I saw a ton of
renovations happening! The place looks like it’s going through a
major cosmetic change! But why? Isn’t it a bit soon to be changing
up the place? Something is clearly up?

The New York Times Diner’s Journal is reporting today that Red Rooster, located at 310 Lenox Avenue in Harlem, will open this Friday, December 17, for dinner only! The Times even has a copy of the menu. Click here to view the menu!
After many months of planning and boat loads of media coverage, I wonder if the downtown and/or uptown crowds will check out Marcus Samuelsson’s new restaurant the weekend it opens or will patrons wait until after the Christmas holiday? I might skip on over there, but not completely sure.
What about you? Tell us! Will you try to get reservations to Red Rooster this weekend or will you wait?

Frederick Douglass Boulevard featured in The New York Daily News

My favorite boulevard has been featured – once again – bright and big!  This time in The New York Daily News.  The article talks about all the “chic boutiques, restaurants and cocktail lounges the have cropped up on Frederick Douglass Boulevard above 110th St” in the last few years. It mentions Frederick Douglass Circle, MODSquad, bier international, 67 Orange, Patisserie des Ambassades and more.  The article even takes a page right out of HarlemGuy’s word playbook by stating “realtors call this bustling stretch of Eighth Avenue Harlem’s Gold Coast.” As with the other positive articles about Harlem, such as in The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal, I love this clip right up there with others!

Holiday Happenings at bier international and Harlem Meer

There are two other nice Harlem holiday events happening this weekend in addition to the Made in Harlem event we told you about early in the week. On Sunday, December 5, from 3-5 PM bier international will be having St. Nikolaus visit  so that kids can have an opportunity to meet him and have their stocking stuffed with a treat.

According to bier, the tradition of St. Nikolaus Day, usually on December 6, is a festival for children in many European countries. It finds its roots in legends dating back to the year 346 when Nikolaos of Myra, a saint and Greek Bishop was reputed to hand out gifts secretly.  He became the model for Santa Claus whose English name derives from the Dutch Sinterklaas. It’s a European tradition that can be enjoyed universally by kids of all nationalities.

In addition, the annual Victorian Holiday Lighting will be taking place at Harlem Meer on Sunday, December 5 from 3-5 PM as well. The event culminates with the lighting of thousands of tiny LED lights strung along the architectural features of Central Park’s northernmost visitor center, the Victorian-style Charles A. Dana Discovery Center.  A camera is highly recommended for this event.

So there is plenty to see and do on December 5. Hope everyone’s holiday season is off to a good start!
