Halloween Pumpkin Sail Harlem Meer

By HarlemGal
On October 25, we went to Central Park’s Halloween Parade and Pumpkin Sail. I believe it’s an annual event held late afternoon along Harlem Meer. If you have never attended, we recommend it – especially for families with children. It was a lot of fun. Seeing all the little tots in their costume was such a treat to see! And of course, the pumpkin sail was wonderful as well.
Enjoy our photos from the event and hope to see you there next year! HAPPY HALLOWEEN from HarlemCondoLife!

NYC election driving opening of Frederick Douglass Circle in Harlem?

The upcoming New York City election is potentially now driving the opening of the long awaited Frederick Douglass Circle at the base of Central Harlem! That is what I was told today by some of the workers at the site. Apparently people will be able to access the Circle by then, but no grand opening will happen for awhile. That’s the latest lowdown from the site.

HarlemCondoLife

Do you believe that time schedule given how long it has taken to finish the project or do you think they were yanking my chain? Let’s be honest, it’s shaping up to look very nice. However, the City has been working on the FDB Circle for a looooong time! Could this timing just be purely a coincidence?

And get this, the City has an office right on 110th Street between Manhattan Avenue and FDB. I tried walking in, but the doors were locked!

Overall, the workers were very clear that they had a deadline to meet and that all the barriers would be down soon. Hmmm. Stay tuned.

And a quick shout out to Zinc Plate Press. They have a very good shot of the sculpture!

Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Blvd gaining another restaurant

American cuisine will be offered in the space pictured above and the chef creating and serving up those meals will bring experience from Eleven Madison and Chanterelle, according to the co-owner of this new restaurant space. This new restaurant will be located on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 112th and 113th Street. The opening date and name of the place are not ready to be disclosed yet, however  the co-owner stressed “hopefully soon, very soon!” Of course, HarlemCondoLife will keep you posted on the details!

With this restaurant coming soon, along with the anticipated opening of the Italian restaurant on the corner of FDB and 117th Street and recent openings, such as Questan’s, these actions continue to support our predication: FDB, also known as 8th Avenue, is on its way to become Harlem’s restaurant row.

Harlem Yoga Studio is born

If you are looking to practice that downward facing dog or warrior pose right here in Harlem, well look no further. Harlem Yoga Studio has arrived. It’s just three weeks old. They have a big open space and are already offering various levels of yoga classes at different times throughout the week. If you’re interested in a yoga practice close to home, I recommend visiting this studio. It’s located on the Northwest corner of 119th Street and Lenox Avenue and the first class is free until November 1, 2009.

I went to the Yoga I/II class with Erica over the weekend and enjoyed it very much. The teacher was well-versed in yoga and extremely polite. The studio is spacious and the location is ideal. It is centrally located where you don’t have to trek far down to the West or East side of upper Manhattan to get to a yoga class. Plus it is right by the 2/3 train to 116th Street! So if you are looking for a yoga studio in Central Harlem, look no more! Namaste!

Street Tree Planting in Harlem

Oct 23, 2009 @ 19:05
By HarlemGal
I was walking along 113th Street between Frederick Douglass Blvd and Adam Clayton Powell today; and I spotted City workers jackhammering away the sidewalk on the North side of the street. I asked the workers what was going on and they said they are planting a ton of trees. Ten to 11 trees they said. Hmm? Seems like a lot for that one block in my view, but we will take it. More green for Harlem!

If someone in the area requested a free street tree from the City for this part of Harlem, HCL says THANK YOU!

Top_Costco_LogoTo follow up on our post from April, we contacted Costco directly to ask them when they plan to open up their store in East Harlem. Their representative responded with: “We have a location opening scheduled for November 12th in Manhattan.” That’s not far away – folks! Will you go to East River Plaza to shop at Costco?  Tell us what you think!

Harlem is backdrop for FX’s Rescue Me

We went and checked out the filming of Rescue Me this morning since we saw the notices along 116th Street over the weekend. The crew were filming right at the intersection of 116th Street & St. Nicholas & Adam Clayton Powell.
Here are a few pictures from the site. We believe we have Denis Leary in one of the photos below! If that’s not him, it certainly looked like him!

As I continue to settle into my new Harlem life, I’m constantly amazed at the amount of TV and film production I see in the neighborhood. Walking along 116th near Adam Clayton Powell today, I spotted another upcoming shoot…this time for the FX Network show Rescue Me. On top of the wonderful diversity of restaurants, nightspots, and people, this is just another thing that makes me happy to call Harlem my new home.

Doctors, Deli’s and 111 Central Park North in Harlem

Oct 14, 2009 @ 13:39
By HarlemGal
I walked to the 2/3 subway stop today at 110th Street and Central Park North and noticed half of the retail space is gone at 111 Central Park North. HarlemCondoLife told you about Doctor Diego moving in to that space, and there had been a lot of chatter online about a McDonalds going there and Subway. Well, we know a Subway franchise got it’s way and a deli. I guess the tenents/owners in 111CPN were able to say “no way Jose” to the golden arches. If that is in fact true, as a homeowner in Harlem I am very happy!
