The good folks behind East Harlem’s Urban Garden Center sent us their event line up for September and October. And as always, there is lots of fun things to do in this section of Harlem.

Mark your calendar. The East Harlem Harvest Festival will take place on Sunday, October 27th from 10 am to 6 pm at La Marqueta on 116th Street and Park Ave. We went last year and had a very good time. This event is a celebration of East Harlem’s retailers, restaurants, bars, institutions, parks, history and more.

On September 15 and 29, and October 13 and 27, there will be a pig roast called El Boar-rio at La Marqueta starting at noon. Flea Marqueta is hosting this event on specific Sundays because that’s when the market is open where you can shop for artisans, food and enjoy entertainment.

Interested in sponsorship and vending opportunities at these events? Email info@fleamarqueta.com for more information.

Bikram Yoga in East Harlem to close…for good

145

Sad Harlem business news to report. Late last night, Bikram Yoga East Harlem informed their members via email that they are “unable to continue operating and maintaining” the yoga studio located at 4 East 116th Street. The owners of Bikram Yoga say they are closing because they have been unable to make a profit from running the yoga studio. The East Harlem yoga studio will close on September 14.

Read the full email notice below.

Dear Bikram Yoga East Harlem Family and Friends:

We are writing to let you know that we are unfortunately unable to continue operating and maintaining Bikram Yoga East Harlem.
After nearly 5 years of serving our community, we continue to be faced with issues that prevent the studio from being profitable.
We have been pouring personal funds into the studio to keep it going for some time now. We can no longer do this.
We have contacted teachers and fellow studio owners who we thought might be interested in buying the studio and taking over the lease, however we got no firm offers.
We are still open to selling it, however, we must announce that the studio will be closed as of September 14th, 2013.
If you know of anyone who might be interested in purchasing the studio and taking over the lease, please have them contact us ASAP.

We are in the process of making arrangements for students to be able to transfer their packages to a nearby studio.
We will confirm those details ASAP.

It is with a heavy heart that we must close, but I look forward to being able to still teach and share the yoga without the burden of ownership in the near future.

Jennifer and I can not thank you enough for the support you have given to Bikram Yoga East Harlem over the past 5 years.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to call or email the studio.
Love & Light,
Stephanie

A reader asks: what’s happening in East Harlem on Lexington Avenue between 100th and 101st Street?

A few days ago, a HarlemGal Inc reader wrote in asking “does your blog know what is going on with a particular block in East Harlem, i.e. Lexington Avenue between 100th and 101st Street?” According to our reader, the entire retail block is now vacant and no one in the area seems to know why? The reader adds, “this is sad to see as we really don’t have many eating options in the area [East Harlem]. Any help would be greatly appreciated!”

So HarlemGal Inc is asking on behalf of our reader, do any of you know why this particular block (Lexington Ave btw 100th and 101st Street) in East Harlem has no more retail services? What happened to the prior businesses on this block? If you have any information or leads, please chime in here! Thank you much and have a great weekend!

Salsa sensation Marc Anthony spotted today in Spanish Harlem

The Facebook page called New Yorkers Do It Better posted a picture to their page today of Marc Anthony in Spanish Harlem. According to the photo, it appears the Harlem native is filming a music video right where or close to where the salsa star grew up, 108th Street and Lexington Avenue.

What a coincidence (or maybe not) that Marc Anthony is in his old hood, East Harlem, today after this past weeks ridiculous flap over him singing the National Anthem?

Whatever the reasons are for him being in Harlem today, that’s great! However, I’m looking forward to buying his latest album, 3.0! Can’t wait!

Last year, East Harlem held their first Harvest Festival, ie East Harlem Harvest Festival, which was a big success. Read coverage here. And we hear they are planning another event for this year!

And Urban Garden Center, which has been a leader in getting events organized in their community, recently announced that Spanish Harlem will now be having their very own flea market called Flea Marqueta starting this June.

So whenever you get a chance, head East in Harlem and check out their events. I promise you will experience a wider view on why the greater Harlem area is an awesome place to live.

East Harlem to start their own flea market, to be called Flea Marqueta

According to East Harlem’s Urban Garden Center, a flea market is popping up right across the street from them at East 116th Street and Park Avenue. Their multiple Facebook posts state “we are starting a flea market called Flea Marqueta…!” Flea Marqueta will start June 23 and run to October.

They are currently looking for vendors, artists, performers, food operators and more. For more information about Flea Marqueta, contact Sara@UrbanGardenNYC.com or call 917-769-4884.

Congrats to Harlem RBI, Prince Harry is visiting East Harlem today

rookiesheader harry

It’s been all over the news. A Prince will be in Harlem today! According to several online reports, Prince Harry will be in East Harlem to visit Harlem RBI for some baseball and to promote the program. That’s so wonderful for them! Way to go Harlem RBI! That’s a home run!

“For more than 20 years Harlem RBI has been serving the neighborhood.  The organization started by reclaiming an abandoned garbage filled lot and turning it into 2 baseball diamonds that would become true fields of dreams for disadvantaged kids in East Harlem.”

If you’re not familiar with Harlem RBI, visit prior posts here to learn more.
