Bikram Yoga in East Harlem to close…for good

145

Sad Harlem business news to report. Late last night, Bikram Yoga East Harlem informed their members via email that they are “unable to continue operating and maintaining” the yoga studio located at 4 East 116th Street. The owners of Bikram Yoga say they are closing because they have been unable to make a profit from running the yoga studio. The East Harlem yoga studio will close on September 14.

Read the full email notice below.

Dear Bikram Yoga East Harlem Family and Friends:

We are writing to let you know that we are unfortunately unable to continue operating and maintaining Bikram Yoga East Harlem.
After nearly 5 years of serving our community, we continue to be faced with issues that prevent the studio from being profitable.
We have been pouring personal funds into the studio to keep it going for some time now. We can no longer do this.
We have contacted teachers and fellow studio owners who we thought might be interested in buying the studio and taking over the lease, however we got no firm offers.
We are still open to selling it, however, we must announce that the studio will be closed as of September 14th, 2013.
If you know of anyone who might be interested in purchasing the studio and taking over the lease, please have them contact us ASAP.

We are in the process of making arrangements for students to be able to transfer their packages to a nearby studio.
We will confirm those details ASAP.

It is with a heavy heart that we must close, but I look forward to being able to still teach and share the yoga without the burden of ownership in the near future.

Jennifer and I can not thank you enough for the support you have given to Bikram Yoga East Harlem over the past 5 years.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to call or email the studio.
Love & Light,
Stephanie

A bit of Harlem is featured in the recent edition of Yoga Journal. A photo of Land Yoga instructor and local Harlem Gal Dana Elyse Tarasavage is in Yoga Journal for their July/August edition. Yoga Journal asks readers for their On Location segment to send in their favorite pose photos from travels around the world. A photo of Tarasavage was sent in of her in Mysore, India striking a difficult yoga pose right there on the street among Indians and their favorite and sacred animal, the cow.

If you haven’t met or taken one of Tarasavage’s classes at Land Yoga in Harlem, you’re missing out. I have personally taken her class many times and enjoy it very much! Dana Elyse Tarasavage is at Harlem’s Land Yoga Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday morning. Land Yoga is located on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 114th and 115th Street.

30 For 30 Movement headed to Harlem’s Land Yoga

I learned yesterday at yoga that the 30 For 30 Movement is heading to Harlem’s Land Yoga tomorrow, May 20. You may ask, why should I care and who is 30 For 30? Apparently, 30 For 30 is a sisterhood in NYC that supports and inspires woman to commit to at least 30 minutes of exercise or movement for 30 consecutive days. 30 For 30 has chosen to expose their fellow “sistas” to a night of  beginners yoga at Land Yoga in Harlem so that they have another option to consider to help them keep on moving.

If you’re interested in checking out 30 For 30, they will be taking a class at Land Yoga in Harlem tomorrow  (May 20) at 7:45 pm. Better yet, if you’ve ever wanted to try a beginners yoga class at Land Yoga with plenty of other fellow beginners, tomorrow’s class would be perfect!

Hope to see you there!

Land Yoga, Asali Yoga, Beloved Yogi Harlem, and Friends of Morningside Park have come together for a fundraiser to educate and end human trafficking-and we are invited to participate as well. On March 9th at 2 pm, these Harlem yoga centers will be doing 108 Sun Salutations in Morningside Park near 120th Street. This one-day event unites yoga practitioners in the City-and around the world-to support human trafficking.

Last year 3,000 individuals from Mysore, India, to London, New York, and Tokyo came together for the one day to raise awareness and funds to Odanadi to support their work rescuing and rehabilitating victims of trafficking, exploitation and abuse, and educating and empowering vulnerable communities. Odanadi has rescued and rehabilitated more than 2,000 children, carried out in 60 brothel raids and brought 137 traffickers to justice.

The goal for this year is to have more than 100 participants at Morningside Park. To participate in this event, which costs $30, go here to register or pick up a sponsorship form at Land Yoga at 2116 Frederick Douglass Ave to raise money through family, friends, and colleagues who plan on participating.
