Uptowners and downtowners turn out in Harlem to support the Horn of Africa

Marcus Samuelsson and is wife Maya opened their home in Harlem this past weekend to guests familiar and unknown-all to help the Horn of Africa. The turn out for the event was packed! And the hosts were as gracious and hospitable as…Harlemites would be. See for yourself in HarlemGal’s latest photo stream!

Harlem business owners helping to feed others here and abroad

There are three Harlem business owners that are actively trying to make a difference by helping to feed others here and in Africa. And they are inviting us to come along and help with their efforts.

Land Yoga and Soham Wellness have partnered together to raise $5,000 for the Food Bank of New York City by the end of September. The Food Bank had a 50 percent cut in their budget and they need our help. To donate to the Food Bank, click here.

Marcus Samuelsson, along with his wife Maya and several other notable organizations, have organized “Brunch for the Horn of Africa” on September 18th at Marcus and Maya’s apartment in Harlem. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for $50 bucks, the Samuelsson’s will be serving traditional American brunch items as well as a few Ethiopian dishes for “Brunch for the Horn of Africa.” Go to this link to make your reservation. Once you RSVP, you will be sent a confirmation email with all the specific details.

In addition to the suggested $50 per person donation, a raffle of various items will take place throughout the event, offering guests a chance to contribute further and win some fun prizes from Marcus’ celebrity pals. “Brunch for the Horn of Africa” will help feed the famine victims in East Africa.

Bono and wife Ali Hewson visit Red Rooster Harlem

Bono didn’t come to Harlem to sing Angel of Harlem. He came for fashion and to visit the hottest restaurant in the City, Red Rooster. Bono and his wife Ali Hewson celebrated her Edun’s spring women’s show and the launch of a men’s marketing campaign with a dinner at Harlem’s Red Rooster restaurant this past Sunday. Women’s Wear Daily has the photo and the scoop of the power couple in Harlem. Click here to read about their involvement in fashion.

Red Rooster Harlem tops Eater.com’s Heat Map

Eater.com just updated their Heat Map today, which basically asks: where should I eat right now? The answer: Red Rooster in Harlem. It is listed as the number #1 spot where hipster foodies are flocking to at the moment. Red Rooster Harlem has been on the Heat Map for sometime, however I don’t recall it being in the top spot. If you look at the entire list, it’s the only uptown establishment listed. Nice!

Red Rooster Harlem is definitely a hot and top spot. We all know who live in Harlem. Eater.com, tell us something we don’t know!

Marcus Samuelsson Pop-Up in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center

A reader points us to an article in the Diner’s Journal-NYTimes.com today, which reports that this coming Thursday, September 8, Marcus Samuelsson will have a pop up in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.  Global Street Food pop up will be located in the cafe from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. through Sept. 15 and “will serve dishes like peri peri shrimp salad, fish falafel with yogurt sauce, and doro wat with injera bread, priced from $5 to $12.”

Ron Perelman raises a cool million for Harlem’s Apollo Theater

It is showtime at The Apollo Theater, but in the Hamptons…to raise money! Ron Perelman, who joined the Apollo Theater board last year, has been throwing quite the fundraising shin-dig at his Hampton’s estate and packed with celebrity power.

Last year, Jon Bon Jovi came out for the first fundraiser and he attended again this year, along with Jaime Fox and Alicia Keys. Apparently, the event that happened this past weekend in the Hamptons raised more than $1 million for Harlem’s famous music venue versus last year where the event did not even reach a million dollars. And guess who donated food to the event? Yup, you guessed it! Marcus Samuelsson.

If this fundraiser happens again and keeps charging guests $2500 a ticket, Ron Perelman will probably reach $2 million dollars next year. Must be nice. And good for the Apollo Theater that their board works for them. The more dinero for our beautiful venue, the better! Ron go for two next year!

Guess who received an A grading in Harlem?

It was only a matter of time before Red Rooster in Harlem would receive the top grading from NYC Department of Health. This past week, Marcus Samuelsson took to twitter to enthusiastically announce that his establishment on Lenox Avenue received an A grading from a C. In a July 10 post I mentioned how it was not going to take long for Marcus and his team to make that change and it certainly didn’t take long.

So if anyone out there was actually hesitating to go to Red Rooster in Harlem because of its previous health grade rating, which I seriously doubt there was, you can now head on over to the Rooster in Harlem and dine at a place with an A grading. I was at Red Rooster last weekend with a guest from Atlanta. We went over there after the Harlem Week kick off event. We had dirty shrimp and rice, oysters and Helga’s meatballs. And as always, it was perfection!

Marcus Samuelsson makes Vanity Fair‘s 2011 International Best-Dressed List

Vanity Fair announced their 2011 International Best-Dressed List today and our very own Harlemite made the list of best dressed men, Marcus Samuelsson. Marcus is in good company on the coveted list. Justin Timberlake is named, along with actor Colin Firth, Armie Hammer who starred in The Social Network, Greek shipping heir Stavros Niarchos and more. See complete list below!

Marcus is having a very good year! Along with the Vanity Fair Best Dressed List, his Harlem restaurant on Lenox Avenue is not even a year old and it’s a happening place. The New York Times has blessed him with several raving reviews on him, such as chef profiles, restaurant reviews and where to hang uptown, i.e. Red Rooster. New York Magazine lists his place on their website in the Most Buzzed About Restaurant in Manhattan. There are several awards he has won this past year. The list goes on and on. Oh, and of course it does not hurt that he has a stunning wife by his side, Maya!

I last caught up with Marcus at the Macy’s Food Truck event this past Sunday to kick off Harlem Week! And come to think of it, he was looking pretty stylish at that event while out there serving catfish sandwiches with sweet potato fries! Can you blame him for looking good! He knows people are watching. He might as well give us all something else to look at other than his delicious food!

Harlem Week 2011 kicked off today, July 31, with much success. There were plenty of New Yorker’s in attendance who wanted to partake in this years theme, “A New York State of Mind.” I certainly did and enjoyed the kick off celebration very much. I checked out all the street vendors and camped out at the Macy’s Food Truck, which was featuring free food by Marcus Samuelsson.

If you were not able to check out Harlem Week 2011 kick off today, do not worry. There is  a month full of activities planned for August.  For additional details, go to Harlem Week’s website.
