Sylvia Woods, who founded famous Harlem restaurant, passes

This evening, Harlem lost a legend. Sylvia Woods, who earned the grand title: the Queen of Soul Food, has gone on to a better place.  The Wood’s Family announced on Facebook tonight that the women who founded and created one of the most famous soul food restaurants in Harlem and in New York City, Sylvia’s Restaurant, succumbed to Alzheimer’s. In their statement, the Wood’s Family said before she left, Sylvia was surrounded by the same environment she created at her Lenox Avenue restaurant: “a host of family and loved ones.”

As one person said on Twitter this evening, “they’re eating collards, fried chicken, and cornbread in heaven tonight…” Amen. 😦

Harlem neighborhoods experience price jump in rental market

According to RentJuice®, a Zillow® business and provider of lease marketing technology to thousands of real estate property managers and brokers, the uptown part of Manhattan, specifically Harlem neighborhoods, experienced a price jump in the rental sector of real estate. In a news release distributed today, it stated that “over the last quarter, the city’s average cost for space remained stable at $4.98 per square foot-exactly the same as at the close of the first quarter. The largest hike in price per square foot occurred uptown in Harlem. Neighborhoods such as Central Harlem, Harlem and Morningside all experienced 11 percent jumps in average price per square foot in the second quarter. Renters in Hamilton Heights, however, saw a five percent decrease in average price per square foot.”

‘Soul Train’ celebration is tonight in Harlem, event seeks to create world’s largest soul train line

Go back in time tonight to an era that brought us “soul” at Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park. Harlem-based non-profit ImageNation is celebrating all things “Soul Train” this evening (July 12) in Marcus Garvey Park. ImageNation’s 10th Annual Outdoors Festival will pay tribute to the late Don Cornelius with a screening of the VH1 documentary “Soul Train: The Hippest Trip in America,” as well as live performances of music from that famous era. Also, ImageNation is aiming to create the largest soul train line tonight here in Harlem. How else to pay better tribute to the man himself, Don Cornelius, than by creating one of the most famous and well-known dance lines: the soul train line? The event is FREE and starts at 7:30 pm. Watch: Skateboarding in Harlem

While I am not a big fan of skateboarding, watching this video of young kids skateboarding through Harlem gave me a new-found appreciation. These skateboarders in this video are very good. Some of the moves they perform on their board are incredible. Just watch.

The only downside to this video, these youngsters are not wearing any protective gear and they are skateboarding on the seating stones at the Frederick Douglass Circle. Ouch, that monument is new and I thought that was prohibited? I guess kids will be kids.

Grammy Award Winner Esperanza Spalding to perform in Harlem October 26

Bassist, vocalist, composer and award winner Esperanza Spalding is coming to Harlem and she will be performing…where else, but the famous Apollo Theater, located on 125th Street between FDB and ACP Blvd. She is performing in Harlem October 26 and tickets go on sale to the public tomorrow, Friday, June 8. The presale is happening now for Amex cardholders and members of the Apollo Theater Foundation.

“Esperanza Spalding is an American multi-instrumentalist best known as a jazz bassist and singer.” Her latest release is Radio Music Society. Listen below to Black Gold from her new CD.

The purpose of this event is to engage women in the private and public sectors, who have not previously considered public office and to address the overall political landscape as it applies to women nationally, in New York City and in Harlem.

Emerging Women Speak is part of an ongoing movement to ensure that young women step forward to shape and advance progressive policies and politics in our changing community and nation.

White T-Shirts Are Fashion and Function in Harlem says New York Times

I am so out of it on fashion in Harlem, but thank goodness I checked The Times this morning. They are reporting that white t-shirts are the in thing at the moment. The New York Times strolled Apollo Theater, the Studio Museum and the shopping strip, 125th Stree, in Harlem recently and reports that “in Harlem wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and red sneakers” is sick! Chris Noth of Sex and the City stops by the Corner Social in Harlem

If you’re not on twitter and following fellow Harlemites or Harlem businesses, such as the Corner Social located on Lenox Ave and 126th Street in Harlem, this blogger highly recommends it. Why? This particular social networking tool always seems to have interesting news about what’s going on in Harlem. For example, Corner Social, formally known as Lenox Social, tweeted last night that Chris Noth, the actor famous for playing Big on Sex and the City, did some socializing last night (May 13) in Harlem at…where else? You guessed it, Corner Social! That’s very cool! I guess Chris Noth knows some of the owners of restaurants in Harlem since he’s in the business as well, or maybe he likes coming uptown to hang because it’s just as fun, if not more, than being downtown.

If you haven’t stopped by the Corner Social in Harlem, better hurry up now. Once celebs start showing up, dining establishments almost always experience a spike in attendance. I am going back this week, pronto! See you there!

See Changing Face of Harlem May 19 at Maysles in Harlem

We all know Harlem has been rapidly changing in the last ten years and there is one filmmaker that I am aware of that’s been documenting our change for quite sometime. It’s Shawn Batey. Batey is the documentary filmmaker behind Changing Face of Harlem. Changing Face of Harlem takes a critical look at how Harlem has undergone its transformation.

There is an opportunity to see the film, in its current stage, which is a work in progress, Saturday early evening, May 19 at Maysles Cinema, located at 343 Lenox Avenue. Changing Face of Harlem is showing during The People’s Film Festival, a festival that “celebrates the power of the media when placed in the hands of the people.”

Mother’s Day greeting card workshop with Harlem native Alton Weekes

Alton Weekes, the talented designer and Harlem native, will be holding a special  workshop…for FREE…May 6 at the Studio Museum Harlem, located at 144 West 125th Street, “offering participants the opportunity to create unique, hand-crafted greeting cards for Mother’s Day.” Weekes will offer tips and methods for designing stationery and hands-on assistance to participants of all skill levels.
