On June 21, look around in Harlem. You may hear music everywhere. Harlem Park to Park (HP2P) and its HP2P businesses are taking part in Make Music New York, the citywide free live musical celebration on Tuesday, June 21st.
From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., participating Harlem Park to Park businesses will become impromptu outdoor stages offering live musical performances and some select specials. A complete list of business are listed below.

Not too long ago, Harlem was profiled in The Financial Times, the UK-based publication. Now The Boston Globe takes its turn and profiles our community in its travel section this past weekend (June 5). Jessica Allen, the reporter, spends two days in Harlem along with her husband and discovers “Harlem makes a visitor feel and taste its forward movement.”
The article highlights various experiences from listening to jazz, to eating at Amy Ruth’s and to drinking at some of our unique establishments, such as 67 Orange and bier international. However, the most notable items in this article are not necessarily about places, but crafted words about Harlem. Allen states “perhaps no other area in New York so eagerly honors its history as Harlem.” She points to our famously named streets, such as Malcolm X and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Furthermore, Allen goes on to say “despite the interest in what came before, these days Harlem seems utterly future-oriented.”
We couldn’t agree more with The Boston Globe! And to Jessica Allen and her husband, come back and see us (Harlem) again now!

It seems just like yesterday I was buying organic honey, nuts, and bread outdoors from Morningside Park Farmers Market. Where did the year go? Now I have to get my grocery list ready because shopping at Morningside Park begins this Saturday, May 28th. I’m so ready! How about you?

We stopped by yesterday (May 21) to check out the new and second location for Les Ambassades at 341 Lenox Avenue. The place is nice and spacious. It is much bigger than their first location in Harlem.
When you enter there is the take out counter to the right, which features crepes, smoothies, milkshakes, select hot food, pastries and breads, soft drinks and ice cream-all to go! If you want to sit down and eat, walk further in. There you will find a complete buffet of West African cuisine. The menu is included in the slideshow, which like their Frederick Douglass Blvd location is moderately priced. The different ideas we found on the menu are the crepes, smoothies and milkshakes. Most of the other items on the menu appeared identical to its FDB menu.
Unfortunately, we were not able to sample the food yesterday. I had a terrible cold and had to get downtown for a meet up. We were totally bummed that we did not get to eat. However, we have every intention of getting back to Ambassades Buffet on Lenox Ave to chow down on the African food. We are going for the crepes and the milkshakes! Take a look at the menu and tell us what do you from the menu?
To visit Ambassades Buffet at 341 Lenox Ave, take the 2/3 subway train to 125th! See you there!

We were eating recently at Les Ambassades in Harlem and could not help but notice the signs on each eating table that said “coming soon, new location at 341 Lenox Ave.” It looks like Les Ambassades is still moving forward with it’s plans to open up another/second location in Harlem and wants it’s customers to know! Good for them! This new location would be right next to Maysles Cinema according to Google Maps. As for the timing of when this new place will open, it is still unknown. Has anyone heard anything? As always, time will tell!

Levain Bakery, which recently opened up a store in Harlem, announced on their Facebook page that this coming Wednesday, March 23rd, they will donate 25 percent of their gross sales from their Upper Westside and Harlem shops to the Red Cross for Japan. They are asking friends/supporters to spread the word.
In support of Levain Bakery and the Japanese people, HCL is encouraging all of its readers to stop by Levain Bakery on Frederick Douglass Blvd and 116th Street on Wednesday for treats and let’s help out those in dire need! See you there!

The wait is finally over. Harlem has a new cookie store! I stopped by Levain Bakery, located on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 116th and 117th Street, yesterday to try out the goods. I purchased four $4 cookies: chocolate chip walnut, dark chocolate chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, and dark chocolate peanut butter chip. I have never tasted a Levain Bakery treat before so I went nuts and asked for one of each flavor. Little did I know.
Before I discuss my favorites, let me state: I am going to be eating cookies until the end of March. I had no idea Levain cookies were so…ahh…huge. I have labeled them big a– cookies, big mac cookies or colossal cookies! These cookies are so big and fat, they look like biscuits. Next time I see my friends who reside on the Upper Westside, I am going to ask “why didn’t you tell me how big these cookies were?” Do I sound like a person who is complaining because I am on the verge of inheriting a new sweet tooth addiction? Simple answer. Yes!
Last night, I bit into each of the four cookies I purchased and do they each pack a punch of flavor. If you love chocolate, try the dark chocolate chocolate chip. It was too much for me and I’d rather eat chocolate cake, but for chocolate cookie lovers it will not disappoint. I also did not care for the chocolate peanut butter chip cookie. If you like peanut butter, this cookie is your friend. Where I am going to become a Levain cookie addict is with the chocolate chip/walnut cookie and the raisin oatmeal cookie. I have come to the conclusion I love traditional, simple ingredient cookies. They remind me of the treats I received when I was a kid. However, these cookies have been injected with 10 times the amount of cookie dough.
Levain Bakery definitely delivers the sweet stuff as some of their fans had already conveyed. Next time, I will only buy one cookie or try something else so that I can now manage my new found sweet tooth addiction.

A follower on Twitter informed me today that Levain Bakery is delaying their opening of their Harlem store by one week. I think this photo says it all. I guess the cookie dough is not ready yet!

What a difference a year makes? Let’s reflect! April 11, 2010 Harlem is poorly ranked by Nate Silver for New York Magazine’s Neighborhood Issue. Does anyone remember this article? I certainly do. That article inspired me to write Top ten reason why Harlem is one of the best neighborhoods to live in. Let’s fast forward to today. Harlem and several local establishments are currently featured bright and big this week in a series of articles under the banner The Everything Guide to Harlem in NY Mag. It’s a creme-de-la-creme of articles featuring restaurants, markets, shops and bars in Harlem. My favorite article is The New New Harlem, which is sort of a “Whose In and Whose Out.” In my view, featuring several establishments in this type of format demonstrates the caliber and variety of places located in Harlem. Plus in order to pit two businesses against each other, there has to be plenty of selection. Clearly, Harlem has reached that point.
In closing, I will use soccer terms to describe this Harlem milestone. This article is another G-O-A-L for Harlem. Remember, we won Curbed Cup 2010 too. More importantly, it recognizes (again) what most of us have known all along, and now NY Mag too, Harlem is hot! Adelante!

Not too long after my blog post talking about when Levain Bakery was opening up for business in Harlem, Levain went on record on their Facebook page and Harlem store door officially, there is a sign up, stating when they are opening up their Harlem store. The day is Tuesday, February 22.
So there we have it! We now have confirmation straight from the source on when Levain Bakery is opening up their Harlem store! Get your taste buds ready, Harlemites! Most people I chatted with about Levain, say their treats are very good!
