Adopt a Harlem grandparent this holiday season

A reader from the Upper Westside shared information about how there is a Mary Kay unit that is adopting residents at a local Harlem senior housing facility, Wyatt Tee Walker Senior Housing on 2177 Frederick Douglass Blvd. They are adopting Harlem senior residents to help make the holidays special for a group that are the most forgotten, seniors.

The Mary Kay unit is asking Harlem businesses and locals to help with this project by adopting a grandparent this holiday. A $15 donation or more will sponsor a special gift for one Harlem senior resident and enable them to have a Happy Holiday Season. Your business card or name will be attached to the gift so they will know that it is a gift from a Harlemite and your business.

Let’s help Harlem Grown win $25,000 from Martha Stewart

Last night when I was online tweeting about the Presidential Debate. I came across Edward Norton’s (the actor) twitter page. His tweet said: “Trying to help Harlem Grown win $25K from Martha Stewart.” I inquired further and realized this was important information Mr. Norton tweeted out. I wanted to share too to help Harlem Grown.

This holiday season Martha Stewart is helping to give back by creating the Thanks for Giving Challenge. This is where charities that raise the most funds by November 25th as a part of the Challenge will receive additional cash contributions (as much as $25,000!) from Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Attend Manhattan Country School Farm Festival in East Harlem October 20

Every year Manhattan Country School (MCS) in East Harlem aims to bring a little bit of the Catskills to the streets and children of NYC during their annual Farm Festival. This Fall season is no different. MCS will host its annual Farm Festival for children ages 3 and up from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 20. This is when parent volunteers turn East 96th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues into an urban carnival, offering family friendly entertainment including rides, games, crafts, a silent auction, raffles and live music-all for FREE! The MCS Farm Festival also offers a selection of homemade baked goods, a wide variety of delicious ethnic cuisine and fresh produce from their farm in Roxbury, NY.

Admission is free and tickets for food, games and rides will be available for purchase. In the event of rain, festivities will take place indoors.

EmblemHealth to offer Harlem residents free flu shots October 16th and 20th

Flu season is upon us and its time to think about how to manage that. EmblemHealth will be offering Harlem residents complimentary flu shots, blood pressure screenings and “brown bag” prescription medication reviews on October 16 at the West Harlem Farmers Market and on October 20 at Mount Morris Park.

Also, while there take advantage of receiving free health and wellness screenings. EmblemHealth and Harvest Home Farmer’s Markets are offering these services at each location through the end of November.

Inside Maya Angelou’s Mt. Morris Park home by The Wall Street Journal

The Mount Morris Park area of Harlem is home to several famous people. One of them is Maya Angelou, an American author and poet. The Wall Street Journal takes us inside Maya Angelou’s Harlem brownstone in a recent article.

As expected, Angelou’s brownstone has most of the original detail on display. Its colorful and gigantic! Her Harlem home is 3,500 square feet with 14 rooms. She also showcases on her walls works of well-known African-American artists, such as Romare Bearden, John Biggers and Charles White.

The interesting tidbit in the article is apparently Maya Angelou owns an apartment building 10 blocks away from her Mt. Morris Park home. She bought the building as an investment back in 2004. Imagine living in that building? Your landlord is Maya Angelou! How cool is that?

Update on The Harlem Pearl

This past weekend, HarlemGal Inc was the first blog to introduce The Harlem Pearl, a four-day to go detox plan, which will be located at the old newspaper kiosk on 112th and Frederick Douglass Blvd. There was a lecture planned for this evening, October 2, at 5 and Diamond Harlem. However, that event has been cancelled. The organizers of the event have provided additional information on the Plan in the interim, such as a complete description of the Plan along with an Aging and Reactive Foods List.

The Harlem Pearl will be opening soon. So stay tuned for more information.

Take a walk at Harlem Art Walk Tour October 6-7

There is so much happening in the month of October in Harlem. Love it! In addition to the Harlem Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 6, there is the annual Harlem Art Walk Tour. This weekend event provides an opportunity to walk around Central Harlem Saturday and Sunday, October 6th and 7th, from 12 pm to 6 pm. The tour features the work of more than 80 artists living and working in Harlem.

Casa Frela Gallery, located at 47 West 119th Street, is the starting point where maps will be distributed to tour participants. The maps highlight the various stops on the walking tour including open artist studios, museums, and cultural and historic venues.  All forms of art will be featured including sculptures, ceramics, painting, photographs, etchings and prints and textiles.

Old Harlem newspaper stand becomes The Harlem Pearl by 5 and Diamond and The Lyn-Genet Plan

For those of you wondering what’s up with the old Harlem newspaper stand at 112th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd and why it was getting a makeover? HarlemGal has the answer. This old vintage newspaper shed, which is owned by the owners of 5 and Diamond Harlem, will be turned into The Harlem Pearl, which is where The Lyn-Genet Plan and 5 and Diamond Harlem are coming together to bring to our community The Plan’s 4-Day Detox to go. More info to come on The Plan.

This is good news! What a great use of this space! And it’s being used for something extremely meaningful and helpful to us all, which is our health. I love this new partnership and what it means. Way to go Lia and Selene! What do you think about this? Do you like how the space is being used?

Attend Maysles Members Night Out in Harlem

Listen up! The Maysles Institute in Harlem will be hosting an exclusive event soon for its members. It’s one you don’t want to miss if you love Cuban history as I do (see blog post on visit to Cuba). And if you’re not a member, you may want to become one to meet fellow members from the Harlem and NYC area.

Maysles Cinema, which is located at 343 Lenox Avenue between 127th and 128 Street, is having a reception for members only on Monday, October 15 at 6:30 pm. After the reception, Maysles Cinema will be screening the film titled Cuba: An African Odyssey at 7:30 pm. “Cuba: An African Odyssey explores the 300,000 Cubans who fought alongside African revolutionaries: from Che Guevara’s military campaign to avenge Lumumba in the Congo up to the fall of apartheid in South Africa. Cuba, an African Odyssey is the previously untold story of Cuba’s support for African revolutions, one of the Cold War’s most vigorous contests over resources and ideology.” Click here to watch a trailer of the film.
