The good folks over at Aromas Boutique Bakery & Cafe located in East Harlem have given us the heads up that they are having their monthly dessert tasting on Tuesday, March 26th from 5 to 7 pm. All are welcome!

At this event there will be sampling of Fresh Lemon Loaf, Carrot Cake, the Best Pumpkin Cake in the World and a New Hazelnut Cake. Aromas Boutique Bakery & Cafe recently added Gluten free Pumpkin Cake and a Brownie to their menu.

Attend MillionTreesNYC Tree Care Workshop at Harlem’s Casa Frela Gallery

imageMillionTreesNYC will be giving a tree care workshop for the Harlem community on April 6th at Casa Frela Gallery, 47 West 119th Street, 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

The workshop will run 2 hours and consist of two parts. The first part will be 30-40 minutes and will take place in the gallery, covering the importance of trees, tree care, and the reasons behind Million Trees NYC’s mission to plant a million more trees throughout the five boroughs. Part 2 of the workshop will be hands-on, where attendees will go outside and actively steward the two new trees on 119th Street — and beyond, time-permitting. At the end of the workshop if attendees pledge to care for a new tree in their neighborhood, Million Trees NYC will give them a free toolkit (collapsible watering bucket, trowel, weeder tool, and cultivator) and a tree care manual with step by step guide to caring for their tree.

Mark your calendar: Harlem Earth Day activities begin April 3

Harlem Park to Park (HP2P) released information yesterday (March 19) about their second annual Harlem Earth Day initiative, which begins April 3rd until April 21st. HP2P has lined up free, fun filled activities for the whole family in Morningside Park (April 7th) and Marcus Garvey Park (April 21st); and panel discussions including celebrity chefs, authors and activists every Wednesday evening at MIST Harlem on April 3rd, 10th and 17th! The initiative is sponsored by Con Edison, Land Yoga, MIST Harlem, Friends of Morningside Park, and Marcus Garvey Park Alliance.

Attend Guiltless Gourmet for a Healthy Harlem, an event to help stop hunger

According to a news release by Beth-Hark Christian Counseling Center (BHCCC), there is an estimated 1.4 million New York City residents who are food insecure and rely on the city’s network of emergency food organizations. BHCCC hopes to VanKline223raise $20,000 through their second annual Guiltless Gourmet for a Healthy Harlem Celebrity Food Tasting and Silent Auction. Funds raised will help the organization keep pace with an increasing demand for emergency food services driven by food insecurity. Guiltless Gourmet for A Healthy Harlem takes place Friday, March 22 at Harlem’s Gran Piatto d’Oro on Fifth Avenue and brings together the celebrity chef triumvirate of Melba’s Melba Wilson (Food Networks’ former Fat Chef), Kimberly Van Kline of Passion for Palate Catering and Ronaldo Calle of Gran Piatto d’Oro.

Guiltless Gourmet for a Healthy Harlem will open with a VIP Reception/Chef Rolando2_smallerMeet and Greet followed by Food Tasting and Silent Auction. Guests will sample a range of celebrity chef gourmet delights from appetizers to main dishes and bid on auction items from jewelry to vacations with starting bids as low as $50. Two-tiered priced Guiltless Gourmet tickets are $65.00 for Food Tasting and Auction. The $75.00 tickets include admission to the Guiltless Gourmet VIP event. Tickets can be purchased at God’s Answer Bookstore and BHCCC offices co-located at Bethel Gospel Assembly, Inc. BHCCC is the social services arm of Bethel Gospel Assembly, Inc. Annual Career Day for high school students to be held at Riverside Church in Harlem

Listen up young people! The Riverside Church will host its 22nd Annual Career Day & College Fair on Saturday, March 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Harlem at 91 Claremont Ave. (bet. 120th & 122nd Streets.). The theme of this year’s event is “Charge Forward!”

The keynote speaker this year will be Councilman Jumaane D. Williams (45th District, New York), who sits on the Committee for Higher Education and serves at the Chair for Youth Services.

At the event this year, participants will have an opportunity to visit with and receive information from representatives of more than 30 different colleges/universities (University of Kansas, M.I.T, Clark Atlanta University, Morgan State University, Wesleyan University and Johnson & Wales); and participate in panel discussions led by working professionals from a wide range of careers and vocations, including: IT, Law, Medicine, Communications, Sports/Entertainment, Engineering, Culinary Arts, Architecture, Green-Jobs and more.

Select Harlem yoga centers partner in Yoga Stops Traffic

Land Yoga, Asali Yoga, Beloved Yogi Harlem, and Friends of Morningside Park have come together for a fundraiser to educate and end human trafficking-and we are invited to participate as well. On March 9th at 2 pm, these Harlem yoga centers will be doing 108 Sun Salutations in Morningside Park near 120th Street. This one-day event unites yoga practitioners in the City-and around the world-to support human trafficking.

Last year 3,000 individuals from Mysore, India, to London, New York, and Tokyo came together for the one day to raise awareness and funds to Odanadi to support their work rescuing and rehabilitating victims of trafficking, exploitation and abuse, and educating and empowering vulnerable communities. Odanadi has rescued and rehabilitated more than 2,000 children, carried out in 60 brothel raids and brought 137 traffickers to justice.

The goal for this year is to have more than 100 participants at Morningside Park. To participate in this event, which costs $30, go here to register or pick up a sponsorship form at Land Yoga at 2116 Frederick Douglass Ave to raise money through family, friends, and colleagues who plan on participating.

Whitney Houston tribute tonight at MIST Harlem

Tonight, there is a Whitney Houston tribute concert at 7:00 pm at MIST Harlem (My Image Studios) at 46 West 116th Street, between Fifth and Lenox Avenue.

Pulitzer Prize-nominated Eisa Davis performs today at the Harlem School of the Arts

Pulitzer Prize-nominated Eisa Davis will take to the stage in Harlem today for an intimate workshop setting, performing excerpts from her latest musical theater piece,Flowers Are Sleeping. The musical piece is a rare insight into the actor-writer-singer’s artistic process; a culmination of years of script development as well as more recent rehearsals in the Harlem School of the Arts’ studios and its ongoing Family Enrichment series.

Eisa Davis will also be performing at the Apollo Music Cafe in May as well. But today’s event is free

AARP New York Launches in Harlem First-Ever Art Exhibition in Celebration of Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, AARP New York is launching its first-ever art exhibition, Lasting Legacy: The Journey of YOU on February 27 in Harlem. To inspire people 50-plus to discover their unique talents, explore new possibilities, and create lasting legacies, AARP will feature the works of AARP2celebrated and emerging artists along with a full roster of special events through April 2013. The artists represent New York City’s rich diversity, with African-American, Latino, and Asian artists displaying their works. The exhibition will be held at the LeRoy Neiman Center, which was launched by a generous gift from the renowned painter LeRoy Neiman, and has become an integral arts-based resource in the Central Harlem community.

Opening February 27 through April 10, the show will feature Willie Cole; Betty Blayton; graffiti artist, Nic 707; along with over ten emerging, mid-career and established visual artists presenting works that capture the journey of life while on the path to creating a lasting legacy.

The LeRoy Neiman Center is located at 2785 Frederick Douglass Boulevard near 148th Street. The opening event is February 27 from 6 pm to 9 pm. More information about the artists and the event can be found at www.aarp.org/ny. The hashtag for the event is #lastinglegacyart.
