There’s one coffee shop in Harlem that wants to cater to the growing population of kids and families in Central Harlem. Cafe Frederick Harlem Parlor on Frederick Douglass Blvd and 114th is now offering a kids program every Tuesday at 4 pm. Stories, songs and movement will be offered to children 0 to 5 with a new theme every week. Unlimited coffee and crepes will be served for $10. Check out their Facebook page to learn more.
While this event is not happening in or around Harlem, Harlemgal is sharing just incase there is a Harlem kid in our community that’s interested in getting involved with the US Open as a ballperson. You know what a person is? It’s that energetic kid that chases the ball when one of those pro tennis players hits the net!
Here’s where you have to be to try out:
Where: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens
When: Thursday, June 19. Registration begins at 3 pm, tryouts begin at 4 pm. To be selected, you must be available for interview/call-backs in mid-July and available to work Tuesday, August 19 through Monday, September 8.
Who: 14 years old and wants to be on court with the biggest stars in tennis. Must be 14 years old by August 19 (If selected you will need valid New York State Working Papers if you are less than 18 years old – contact your school’s employment office for more information).
Skill: The US Open is looking for talented athletes with great throwing arms, a love for the sport and a thorough understanding of the game.

Harlem Biospace, a new biotech incubator that opened recently for early stage life science companies, has launched a new kid initiative called HYPOTHEkids. HYPOTHEkids, a summer science camp starting in July, was developed to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and technology entrepreneurs right here in Harlem.
Limited slots are available for this eight-week summer program for K-5 children. The program is designed and taught by Columbia University-affiliated faculty and students (from Teachers College and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences). There is a theme a week and each theme will be explored through different lenses of science.

The New York French American Charter School is hosting their annual Spring event open to the Harlem community this Saturday, May 3. The street festival will offer food from around the world, two bouncy houses, games, and a plant sale. Proceeds from the spring event will benefit programming at the school. See details below.

Go back in time this weekend, April 26. That’s when Street Games, which takes place every year, is happening in East Harlem. Start time is 11 am.
Street Games brings back the classic games and sports played by previous generations and gives them a modern twist. New Yorkers young – and young at heart – can visit Classic Street Games zone and get moving with stickball, pogo sticks, hula hoops, double-dutch, yo-yos, and skateboarding clinics.
Street Games closes 114th Street and Pleasant Avenue in Harlem to vehicle traffic, so kids can participate in a soap box derby, learn to ride a bike clinics, street hockey, and relay races. On the adjacent fields, participants can test their soccer skills with the New York Red Bulls soccer team or throw a disc with the New York Empire ultimate team.

There is a Harlem Easter Egg Hunt happening this Saturday, April 19, at My Gym at 258 St. Nicholas Avenue for children ages 1-7. The event is free. On Easter Sunday, April 20, at 2:00 pm, Harlem Shake will be partnering with Susie Q, a local celebrity fitness trainer and clothing designer, to offer guests an afternoon of line dancing, an Easter egg hunt, plus prizes and good food. Harlem Shake will be serving two Easter themed milkshakes on Easter Sunday. The Funny Bunny is a hazelnut chocolate shake with a chocolate Easter bunny hidden inside, or the Kool Peeps, a pistachio flavored shake topped with Peeps candy. Signature items from the regular menu like specialty burgers, fries and shakes will also be available for purchase.

Harlem parents, have you checked out Tribeca Pediatrics,which recently opened in Harlem on 114th Street and Frederick Douglass? I have taken my daughter twice already, seen all doctors and both experiences have been very good so far. I plan to continue to take my daughter there. A reader from Bozeman, Montana/Jakarta, Indonesia sent in a unique story tip to share. The cellist from the famous Ahn Trio, three Julliard-trained sisters (Lucia on the piano, Angella on the violin, and Maria on the cello) who have “earned a distinguished reputation for embracing 21st century classical music,” is offering an opportunity to train with her for FREE! How does a musician get to study with Maria from Ahn Trio? If you are between the ages of 12-18, you will need to audition during the Harlem School of the Arts Prep Auditions, which will take place May 5-9. The individual(s) chosen will be able to study-tuition free with Maria for a whole year!

Need a kid project for Spring Break? Here’s a suggestion! The Laundromat Project is offering a five-
day art class for Harlem middle-school kids from April 14th to 18th, which is Spring Break for NYC public schools. The art class begins at 9:30 am and runs to 3 pm. During this time, students will learn how to silkscreen and print with linoleum plates, and visit local museums and artist studios.
If you don’t have anything scheduled for your kids during Spring Break, this program is a nice option filled with art making and creative expression.
The deadline to apply was today, but it has been extended to March 24. Interested parents should apply here.
