The sixth annual Mafrika Music Festival is scheduled for June 24 in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem. The program starts at noon and runs till 7 pm. And its FREE to the public. Enter Marcus Garvey Park at 120th street and 5th Avenue in Harlem. As always, this event has involvement from Yatenga French Bistro and Bar and ShrineNYC.
For the last several years, all Harlem has seen is condo buildings going up-one after the other-especially on or near Frederick Douglass Blvd. Another building is going to be constructed in this Harlem area. However, it’s not going to be a condo. Several sources tell Harlem Gal Inc that the next building to be built from the ground up in Central Harlem will be a rental building and the developer responsible for this will be Hans Futterman. Futterman has built 2280 FDB and several other buildings in the surrounding area in Harlem.
Futterman purchased the space on St. Nicholas Avenue between 121st and 122nd Street. It’s where the gas station use to be. If you walk by you will see that it’s been closed and permits are hanging on the fence. Futterman has told several business people in Harlem that he is going to build a rental building at this location in Harlem since most of what he has built has been condos!
There is no word yet as to what the building will look like in terms of layout or how high. As with most stories, that information will unfold over time.
As for whether this building will be an affordable rental building, I seriously doubt it. Most of what Futterman builds is mid-to-high end. Stay tuned!
There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t learn something new about our beloved Harlem community. Going through my inbox last night, I came across information that read: Art In FLUX Harlem! Never heard of it…until now . Here’s the low down.
Art In FLUX Harlem is a series of Pop-Up Art Galleries opening in Harlem this Spring. The first FLUX Pop-Up is set to open Wednesday evening, May 2, at the corner of 118th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. The opening is sponsored by 5 and Diamond Harlem and a tasting will be offered by the Harlem restaurant.
On the May 2 opening night, “Urban Environment Project” will be the first in a series of pop-up art galleries in Harlem produced by Art In FLUX Harlem. The project will present the art works of seven international artists: Montserrat Daubon, Ellen Hackl Fagan, Hiroshi Jashiki, Leslie Powell, Anya Roz, Tafa, and Pedro Villalta.
“Art In FLUX was started by a group of Harlem residents with a strong interest in supporting artists in Harlem and increasing awareness of the rich arts culture that runs deep in Harlem and yet is still somewhat of an underground culture.”

Alton Weekes, the talented designer and Harlem native, will be holding a special workshop…for FREE…May 6 at the Studio Museum Harlem, located at 144 West 125th Street, “offering participants the opportunity to create unique, hand-crafted greeting cards for Mother’s Day.” Weekes will offer tips and methods for designing stationery and hands-on assistance to participants of all skill levels.

Safe, Healthy, Affordable and Reliable Energy (SHARE), in collaboration with local Harlem restaurants, churches, pastors and prominent elected officials will celebrate Harlem Earth Day, April 22, by offering free Pedi Cab rides to local residents. Pedi Cabs will be available from 11 am to 3 pm on Frederick Douglass Blvd from 110th to 125th Street-rain or shine.

If you haven’t heard, a new bar and restaurant called Lenox Social, located on the northwest corner of Lenox Avenue and 126th Street in Harlem, is open for business on limited hours! I poked my head into Londel’s Bar, located on the corner of 115th and Frederick Douglass Blvd. in Harlem, this evening to see what’s up since all the lights were on and people were hanging out inside the place. The ladies inside told me Londel’s Bar was opening tomorrow night, March 1, and that staff are in the bar tonight (Feb. 29) for a staff meeting. So let’s see what happens tomorrow and I guess the touchy situation between the Livmor Condo and the Church got worked out…or not!

The Aloft Harlem Hotel features an exhibition of a solo artist each month and that practice continues this month with Charly Palmer’s High Notes, Blue Notes and Honky Tonk Exhibition on view at the Aloft Harlem from February 16-March 14, 2012.
The exhibition features 15 medium-sized paintings of seminal figures who have shaped music history and have inspired the artist, Charly Palmer.
Palmer is known for his interpretation of some of the most respected music icons of our time celebrating the marriage between music and visual art, and the influence both have on each other. Palmer has been the subject of more than twenty solo exhibitions and has been included in numerous group exhibitions in galleries across the United States.
This coming Friday (Feb. 24) at 8 pm our very own celebrity chef, Red Rooster owner, and Harlem local, Marcus Samuelsson, will give Food Network viewers a closer look at Harlem’s food revolution through a special TV program called Savoring Harlem. In the TV special, Savoring Harlem will showcase the food culture of several Harlem restaurants, such as Red Rooster Harlem, Melba’s, restaurant pioneer Sylvia’s and more.
Yum! This will be fun to watch and then go out to eat in Harlem afterwards. Turn your tube on at 8 pm to the Food Network!

Harlem is getting another bar and grill soon, but this time it’s going to be on Lenox Avenue, caddy corner to Red Rooster Harlem and directly across the street from Sylvia’s. Lenox Social is the name of this upcoming place and its going to be located on the northwest corner of 126th and Lenox Ave-321 Lenox Ave to be exact. You may have seen the signage outside already when you walk by?
“Lenox Social will be a gathering spot where friends, co-workers, neighbors and families can count on quality food and drinks at reasonable prices,” says Anahi Angelone, a Harlem resident and owner and general manager of Lenox Social.
HarlemGal Inc. reached out to Angelone recently and she has shared some details with us on her new business. According to Angelone, Lenox Social in Harlem will have “a twenty-two foot long bar with 18 traditional and craft beers on tap, and a great cocktail and wine menu. It will have a fireplace, banquette and communal seating, flat screen televisions as well as projectors and drop down screens for special events.” Lenox Social also plans to have WiFi for customers during the day.
As for when Lenox Social will open, all Angelone would say is “they intend to open in the very near future.” So stay tuned Harlemites. We are about to get another new place to hang and dine at!
