Watch Savoring Harlem on the Food Network Friday, February 24

This coming Friday (Feb. 24) at 8 pm our very own celebrity chef, Red Rooster owner, and Harlem local, Marcus Samuelsson, will give Food Network viewers a closer look at Harlem’s food revolution through a special TV program called Savoring Harlem.  In the TV special, Savoring Harlem will showcase the food culture of  several Harlem restaurants, such as Red Rooster Harlem, Melba’s, restaurant pioneer Sylvia’s and more.

Yum! This will be fun to watch and then go out to eat in Harlem afterwards. Turn your tube on at 8 pm to the Food Network!

What’s open in Harlem, post Hurricane Irene?

If you are wondering what is open today in terms of dining, post Hurricane Irene, we have received word that Slyvia’s Restaurant is open for lunch, Lido Italian Restaurant and Bar is open for dinner and Les Ambassades on Frederick Douglass Bvld is open as well. Also, Harlem Tavern is opening at 3 p.m. today. Chez Lucienne is open now.

Slyvia’s is located at 328 Lenox Avenue aka Malcolm X Blvd., New York, NY 10027.

Lido Harlem is located at 2168 8th Avenue aka Frederick Douglass Blvd, New York, NY 10026.

Les Ambassades is located at 2200 FDB.

Harlem Tavern is located on the northwest corner of 116th Street and FDB.

Chez Lucienne is located at 308 Lenox Ave.

Regarding yoga, Bikram Yoga East Harlem, located at 4 East 116th Street is open for 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. classed today. Also, Book Culture bookstore sent email saying they’re open today. It’s located at 536 West 112th Street and 2915 Broadway.

If you’re not on Flipboard, Taptu or Pulse on your Ipad, get there soon. I am finding a load of information about Harlem on these app tools, such as Gadling, which has a profile of Harlem up on their site. Gadling is an AOL travel blog.

In their profile on Harlem, they list different things to do than The Boston Globe or The Financial Times. They tell their readers to check out places in Harlem, such as the Jazz Museum, Hip Hop Culture Center, Patsy’s in Spanish Harlem, WYZ Bar at the Aloft Hotel and more. Several Harlemites have $20.11 posted on their Facebook or WeHarlem pages and it’s not a reminder of the current year.  It’s locals reminding us through social networks that it is restaurant and retail month right here in Harlem. In their neighborhood highlights section, NYCgo.com, the official guide to the Big Apple, is featuring Harlem this week in “14 great things to see and do” informing online readers and subscribers that this part of Manhattan is the place to be!
NYCgo says “Harlem is unquestionably happening. Buoyed by an influx of former downtowners and embolden by a tradition of culture and creativity, Harlem is chock-a-block with new high-end shops, restaurants, music halls, lounges and even a luxury hotel.” (They are talking about the Aloft Hotel, which will open in August 2010). The site continues telling its readers that Harlem is “sleek, chic and sophisticated.” I could not agree more with the way NYCgo.com has described my beloved Harlem and all the to see and do items listed seem on target!

Several news reports said on Thursday that Caroline Kennedy was seen having lunch at Sylvia’s.  I believe Caroline is a Brooklyn Gal now (readers tell me if I am wrong?), however Harlem is such a cool place and Sylvia’s is a long time staple of the community, we can see why she lunched there.
