The redevelopment of Victoria Theater in Harlem is back on track says The New York Times

Harlem’s 125th Street is back in the news again. Back in July the City announced the redevelopment of two major, vacant sites on Harlem’s 125th Street. Today, we are hearing from The New York Times that the redevelopment of Victoria Theater “is back on track and will break ground in the second half of next year.” The delay was due to the financial crisis back in 2008.

The entire project, which is being designed by the same architect firm that built the Livmor Condos on Frederick Douglass Blvd., will include two towers above the theater: a rental building in one tower and hotel in the other tower. The first floor will become the new home of the Classical Theater of Harlem, Jazzmobile, the Harlem Arts Alliance and the Apollo Theater Foundation.

If you’re wondering if all this good news that’s been announced about 125th Street is a coincidence, it’s not. According to the Times article, all these changes being announced is due to the city rezoning the street replacing buildings along 125th with “office towers, residential high-rises and cultural institutions. The rezoning was approved just as the real estate market collapsed, and many of the developments did not get off the ground. Several are starting up again.”

This is great news. Who cares about the timing. We will take it! To read the entire article by the Times, click here.

Have you ever heard of the Lunch Quadrant by Gothamist? Harlem’s 125th Street is featured this week! For the Lunch Quadrant, they checked out the lunch options at Island Salad, Fishers of Men at 121 West 125th Street, Mobay at 17 West 125th Street, and Red Rooster. Apparently, they go out in the city and find four lunch options (two standing, two sitting) by a given subway stop every week! Pretty cool…huh?

Paul McCartney performs at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater to a celebrity packed crowd

Monday night was supposed to be a quiet evening relaxing without the computer. Yeah right. The evening ended up being quite the opposite. I got sucked into the real-time online coverage of Paul McCartney playing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, December 13 – mainly on twitter. I am a huge Paul/George/John/Ringo fan so it was easy for me to drop everything.

There were a variety of tweets that came in throughout the evening giving you a sense of what was happening. Deepak Chopra seemed to have the first photo make it out of the Apollo. Then followed by Martha Stewart.

While there were several twitters telling their followers in real-time what songs McCartney was performing at the Apollo, the Examiner.com was quick – and the first to provide the complete set list right after the event was over, along with photos and a post on which celebrities attended the event.

In the end, the Examiner was topped by a subscriber on YouTube, who soon posted live audio from the event right at 11 PM on December 13, which I have posted here. Hurry up and listen to it soon …who knows how long it will last!

According to several online reports, McCartney called the Apollo Theater “the holy grail” and a place he has “dreamed of playing for many a year.” What a nice touch and respectable acknowledgement to the Apollo by McCartney. That is rock royalty at its best!

It will explain why Gaskin earns both titles!

Bright holiday lights accessorize Harlem’s 125th Street

We walked along 125th Street last night to see the holidays lights in Harlem, which are now on and hanging from East to West!
The hanging holiday lights on 125th Street look wonderful and are different depending on which part of the street you’re walking. We noticed snowflakes hang from Adam Clayton Powell Blvd and 125th on heading West. Then from ACP Blvd and 125th on heading East stars lining the street! Did anyone else notice this?
We also encountered a special treat when walking along 125th Street in Harlem last night, FREE hot chocolate from Starbucks! They were giving free cups of hot chocolate out to those that were passing by looking at lights! Nice!
So have you seen the “Holiday Lights on 125?” If so, tell us what you think!
