Harlem’s Honeycomb Burgers aiming to open by end of summer

I was at Chocolat recently enjoying their happy hour (more on that later) and while there I inquired about the status of Honeycomb Burgers, located on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 119th and 120th Street. The word is they are hoping to open the place by the end of summer. Harlemites can hopefully expect a new burger joint around August or mid September. We all know the drill when it comes to opening these establishments. Deadlines are very fluid. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the hamburger prices will be reasonably priced at Honeycomb Burgers in Harlem!

Leon Ellis, the owner of Moca and Chocolat, owns Honeycomb Burgers. He is clearly expanding his restaurant business in Harlem and will soon dominate this particular block in Harlem once his third business opens. Good for Leon and best wishes for continued success! Can’t wait to have a burger there!

Harlem Tavern delays opening to Fourth of July weekend

If you were planning on stopping by Harlem Tavern tomorrow night, June 29, don’t. They’re not quite ready yet. They just passed their last inspection last night (June 27) and over the weekend they put out a call for more food runners. They were needing a lot more help. Given all this, they are now aiming to open this Friday if all goes as planned.

So if you are around over the holiday weekend, there might be another place in Harlem to sit outside to eat and drink! In the mean time, check out their menu and drink list, here. When they open, you’ll be ready to order when you arrive! Stay tuned…

Harlem Tavern to open next week

UPDATE: Harlem Tavern is having a soft opening this coming Wednesday, June 29! Not the 27th!
The day is near when Harlem’s newest beer garden will officially open to the public. Harlem Tavern recently had their gas turned on, all the hires are in place, and this week several days of training occurred. When I last spoke to the owners, they said “give us one more week.” That was this past weekend. Plus all the major traditional New York press are reporting what we have known all along, Harlem Tavern is scheduled to open next week.

We continue our series called Inside Harlem Tavern. We recently told you about how Harlem Tavern is going unisex all the way with their toilets. Let’s now turn our attention to the fun facts about the bar and restaurant opening up on the corner of 116th and Frederick Douglass Blvd.

Three adjacent lots on Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Blvd for sale

Ever wonder what three adjacent lots on Frederick Douglass Blvd will cost? The answer is…$4 million dollars! That’s what 2126 FDB at the corner of West 115th Street is going for, according to Tungsten Property. They apparently have come uptown to grace this building with their sign and phone number-obviously at the owners request. Whomever owns these lots is clearly ready to part with it and for a nice chunk of change. I guess this explains why the sidewalk out front has never been fixed for years. It is all beat up and creates a little pond every time it rains or a miniature ice skating rink develops when it snows. The owner probably thought why bother to fix it when I can get $4 million dollars and leave it for someone else to handle. Right?

My only hope is that whomever takes over this property does a gut renovation and leaves the shell. The shell looks like it can be restored. This part of Harlem does not need a new building from the ground up in my view. It needs investors/new developers who will come in and want to keep and maintain Harlem’s charm through its original structures. What do you think should happen to this space?

The upside to seeing this lot up for sale is FDB is clearly a happening place when it comes to commercial and residential real estate. So much has changed along this boulevard since early 2000. Maybe that’s why this blog called it “Harlem’s gold coast?”

The evolution of a Harlem bodega

Since the beginning of April, one of my favorite Harlem bodegas has been going through a major transformation. It’s the bodega on the corner of West 112th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd.

I spoke with the owner recently and asked “why all the changes?” He said it was time for a different look and he wanted to keep up with the changing neighborhood. From these photos, which were taken in April and May, you can see the evolution of this Harlem Bodega. One day it was boarded up and then the next thing you see is a big red sign. I like the new appearance and I’m ready for the bodega to reopen.

In addition, the owner said they plan to open in about another week with 24 hour store hours. So if you need an item after hours, this place at 2070 Frederick Douglass Blvd plans to be open!

Honeycomb Burgers to join Harlem’s restaurant row

The block on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 119th and 120th appears to be filling up with places to dine pushing this part of Harlem along as restaurant row. First there was Moca, which was really the pioneer in dining in that specific space, then Chocolat, followed by Bad Horse Pizza and now we are getting a burger joint called Honeycomb Burgers. Could this be the half answer to our diner prayers? Several readers here on HCL have been pleading to the blog universe asking for diner in Harlem! Maybe this is partially it? Also, the Cupcake Suite Cupcakery has been trying to open in that block as well, but got derailed due to investor challenges.
As for who is behind Honeycomb Burgers, we are hearing chatter that a local/seasoned restaurateur is involved. Hmmm… We’ll wait until the burger is ready before we comment further!


Harlem featured in UK’s Financial Times

I always say “one can’t swing a bat lately without hitting the word “Harlem.” The Financial Times, the UK-based business paper, has now featured Harlem in their April 30 House and Home edition. Not too long the FT featured Red Rooster as well. This article quickly goes over Harlem’s rich history, mentions how crime is basically much better throughout New York City especially Harlem in the last ten years,and Harlem’s upswing in major change began back in 2004/2005. The article goes on to interview two homebuyers, one who bought a brownstone for under $1 million and the other who purchased a penthouse apartment on Frederick Douglass Blvd. Both homeowners talked about how much space one could receive in a home in Harlem and within budget. However, one homeowner stressed why they came to Harlem: “I like the sense of diversity I’ve found here.”
