NYC Green Market looking to make Harlem its home, feedback needed

A reader dropped us a line over the weekend we found interesting. Apparently there is a NYC Green Market movement actively discussing bringing a farmers market to the vacant lot in Harlem at West 117 Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. This is the space where the Harlem Pop Up Green Market was held last year. In order to help make it a reality, Grow NYC needs to gain enough community feedback to demonstrate a strong need and desire for the market. They are looking to hear from us.

If interested in providing feedback, send Margaret Hoffman, Green Market Regional Coordinator, an email stating your interest and support of the market in this part of Harlem. It’s snow day in the park, free winter activities for youth

New York City youth can take to the parks today for fun, free snowy activities hosted by NYC Parks & Recreation. Snow Day sites (one in each borough, locations listed below) will host FREE, supervised outdoor recreation and winter fun for youth, including sledding, snowman and snow angel contests, music and complimentary hot chocolate. Sleds will be available to borrow as well.

Manhattan
Riverside Park (Riverside Drive at 103rd Street)
12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Bronx
Crotona Park (Fulton Avenue and East 172nd Street)

Tweet of the Week: Visit Grandmas Place in Harlem

This weeks Tweet of the Week belongs to Grandmas Place in Harlem and @Schopgirl. Recently, I posted a photo on Instagram of Grandmas Place, located at 84 West 120th Street in Harlem, saying “there’s nothing better than Grandmas Place” to shop for great gifts for kids! Out of the blue, the owners daughter of Grandmas Place tweets back “that’s my mom! 40 plus years in education, literacy, and passion for toys and books.”

This is a classic example that when you tweet something out about Harlem, you are bound to come across family! Luv it!

To shop at Grandmas Place, take the 2/3 subway to either 116th or 125th Street. They’re located right behind Settepani!

Attend the Athena Film Festival in West Harlem, four academy award nominated films to be featured

Now in its third year, the Athena Film Festival, a celebration of women in feature films, documentaries and shorts that highlight women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world will be held in West Harlem at Barnard College from Feb. 7-10. The four-day festival, which includes conversations with directors and Hollywood stars and workshops for filmmakers, has built a reputation as one of the most prestigious festivals of its kind that focuses on women and leadership. The following are big highlights of the Festival.

Introducing The Harlem Sound Project, caberet music at The Chipped Cup

There is a new concert series uptown for us to check out! It’s called The Harlem Sound Project and it’s happening in the Hamilton Heights area of Harlem. The focus of The Harlem Sound Project is “to bring quality classical music and jazz to the Harlem community.” Their next concert will be on Valentines Day at The Chipped Cup located at 3610 Broadway and West 149th Street. Ramy Ashour, professional squash and ’10 world No. 1 player, visits Harlem

A reader sent in a wonderful picture to share with us all of professional squash player Ramy Ashour visiting Harlem “for the first time” Jan. 28 to meet with StreetSquash.org participants from Harlem. How cool/international is this? Totally cool, in my book!

Why is Ramy Ashour in New York? According to our source, he had just won the Tournament of Champions (TOC), which ended on Thursday, the 24th. It’s a huge tournament that is held every year in January in Grand Central Station with the top players, both male and female, coming from all over the world. The purpose of Ashour’s visit to Harlem was to speak with StreetSquash kids about his life and then do a Squash clinic. Ashour won the TOC and then went to StreetSquash in Harlem.

According to Google, Ramy Ashour, a pro from Egypt, reached world No. 1 in January 2010 after beating Nick Matthew in the final of the 2009 Saudi International Squash Tournament. To learn more about Ashour online, follow him on Twitter.

Tweet of the Week: Harlem RBI seeking volunteers

Navigating the Twitter-sphere, one can be drowned in information, especially on Harlem. There is a ton of great info out there. However, some Harlem info on Twitter pops out. In Tweet of the Week, a new series on HarlemGal Inc, Harlem RBI rises to the top and the first to be featured. They simply tweeted recently, “Volunteer at Harlem RBI. You can coach these kids!” When you open up the link, its an adorable photo of kids in their baseball uniforms. So cute! (See above)

If you’re interested in volunteering at Harlem RBI, so you can “coach these kids” to be winners on and off the field,  fill out their volunteer form. “Harlem RBI is always looking for dedicated volunteers.” Check it out. Maybe that’s you?

Harlem’s Thelma Golden and Duro Olowu featured in Town & Country Magazine

In the February issue of Town & Country, Thelma Golden, director and chief curator of the Studio Museum Harlem, and Duro Olowu, Golden’s clothing designer husband, are featured in the affluent magazine mentioning that Olowu has inked a deal with JCPenny where his clothes, accessories and other items will be sold at JCP and online starting this coming March-all for under $90. Very cool. And apparently our First Lady Michelle Obama is a big supporter of Olowu. Double cool.

Dr. Mehmet Oz to visit Harlem Children’s Zone for ‘Brush Up Smile Zone’

According to a media advisory, the TV doctors are coming to Harlem. Actually the real ones, not the TV actors who play doctors on TV. This coming Thursday, Jan 24, Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Jonathan B. Levine, who is a national oral health expert and regular contributor on “The Dr. Oz Show,” will join more than 300 kids (ages K-12) at the Harlem Children’s Zone to host a special themed event, “Brush Up Smile Zone!” The event will include a variety of fun and educational activities that spread the message about the importance of good oral health-as it relates to overall health.

jj1Oral-B is the corporate sponsor. Through a charitable partnership, Oral-B and Dr. Levine’s GLO Good Foundation are educating Americans on the importance of having good oral health. They will be visiting select areas throughout the country. The first stop is starting right here in Harlem on January 24th.

This event is happening from 4:30 to 6 pm at the Countee Cullen Community Center, PS 194, which is located at 244 West 144th Street between Frederick Douglass Blvd and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.

MIST Harlem launching new series this month

MIST Harlem (My Image Studios, LLC), the country’s first minority-owned entertainment center, has released their schedule to us announcing new series this month. Check out the details below on the upcoming series:

Uptown Thursday Nights Comedy Series
This series will begin Jan 17 with a headline event that launches a 16-week series of premiere local comedians. To purchase tickets, go here.

MIST Inspirations
The first and third Mondays at MIST will be reserved for Monday Inspirations. This series will launch similarly with a headlining Gospel artist in a full MIST house, Monday, Jan 21. The bi-weekly series will then run for 16-weeks on first and third Mondays, in the center MIST Theater from 7:30-9:30 pm. Gospel artists for the series will be booked from premier local artists (tri-state) and special guests who may be in the area for other engagements and promotions. For tickets, click here.

Creatively Speaking Film Series
Creatively Speaking is a curated film series offering a diverse forum that highlights independent film by and/or about people of color. The film series began early December 2012 and will run monthly at MIST Harlem with a collection of shorts, documentaries and narrative films that tell stories that present realistic portrayals of people of color rarely seen in the media, and appeal to varied audiences, crossing multiple cultural, geographic and socio-economic divides.
