Black Comic Book Festival happening today at the Schomberg in Harlem

This is for all the comic book fans out there in Harlem! Today from 10 AM to 4 PM, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, blacksupermen_1located at 515 Lenox Ave at 135th Street, is hosting The Black Comic Book Festival today, Jan 12.

The Black Comic Book Festival is a gathering for young people who enjoy reading about the rich tradition of black superheroes. The festival will feature a screening of the film “White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in Comic Books”; a pop-up art exhibition of “Black Kirby”- a visual homage to the legendary comic book artist Jack Kirby by artists John Jennings (SUNY Buffalo) and Stacey Robinson; panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and exhibit tables with premiere black comic book artists from across the country. This event is free. Registration is required. All ages welcome. Go here to learn more.

MulchFest Weekend: where to drop off in Harlem?

It is MulchFest Weekend Saturday and Sunday, January 12 and 13, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. And there are several Harlem locations! Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled either by drop off or chipping. Chipping locations will mash-up the tree right there and let you walk away with the mulch. Morningside Park and Marcus Garvey Park are chipping locations. Go here to see all Harlem locations.

Harlem’s Democracy Prep Public Schools to host ‘Inauguration of a DREAM’

This January 21st, Democracy Prep Public Schools, which operates six charter schools in the Harlem area, will be hosting “Inauguration of a DREAM: a Celebration of Education, Service, and Democracy” from 10 am to 4 pm at the Harlem Armory. This event is free and open to the public. It will feature live music, guest speakers, food, door prizes, and community service opportunities to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This event will coincide with the second Presidential Inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Democracy Prep is a growing network of six free, open-enrollment, high-performing no excuses public charter schools committed to preparing scholars for success in the college of their choice and a life of active citizenship. East Harlem school to lead peaceful march in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr

On Monday, January 21, 2013 at 10 a.m., Manhattan Country School, located at the base of East Harlem on East 96th Street, will lead a peaceful and inspirational march through the streets of New York City in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Having chosen the route and theme of the march themselves, MCS eighth grade students will stop at several points along the march route to give public speeches they have written addressing contemporary civil rights issues. This year’s march theme is “In 25 Years: Reflecting on the Civil Rights Struggles of the Past, Looking Toward Justice for Tomorrow.”

The public is invited to attend and can join at the beginning of the march or meet along the route to hear student speeches, sing freedom songs, and participate in a unique event that is educational and uplifting.

Starting time & location: 10 a.m. at Gracie Mansion
(East End Avenue and 89th Street)

VH1’s Black Ink Crew filming at Harlem’s Cedric French Bistro and Bar tonight

Did you watch the Season Premiere of Black Ink Crew last night? It is a new reality series featuring “the only black-owned and operated tattoo parlor in the heart of Harlem at 113th St. and Lenox Ave.” If you missed it, it is showing again tonight at 8 pm, Jan 8.

And if you want to see the cast of Black Ink Crew being filmed in Harlem, pass on by Cedric French Bistro at 185 St. Nicholas Avenue and 119th Street tonight. VH1 is filming there tonight, according to Cedric’s Facebook page.

To learn more about Black Ink Crew from Harlem, go to its website, but ignore the big fat typo they have in the first paragraph. They spelled Lenox Ave with two n’s not one. It happens…

The Park Wine Bar in Harlem receiving push back from neighbors

Did anyone notice the recent article in The New York Daily News about the upcoming Park Wine Bar in Harlem? Apparently, Harlem neighbors, mainly those that live in building above where the wine bar plans to open, are already complaining to Community Board 10 about the self-serve wine bar’s plans to have an outdoor patio in the back of the building. The Park Wine Bar will be located at 2080 Frederick Douglass Blvd between 112th and 113th.

For those of us who have lived in Harlem a while, know that this location was an abandoned lot for the longest time. No building/business/residents existed there until the building went up. Fast forward to today and we have a wine bar moving in and neighbors above complaining. Cheez…how things change.

Just curious. What are your thoughts on the subject?

Is a new fish market coming to Harlem on St. Nicholas Avenue?

A reader recently dropped in a tip on Twitter saying that the space where Obama Chicken on St Nicholas Ave and 116th in Harlem is being worked on. Our reader asked a worker on site “what’s up?” and the worker responded with “a fish market is coming.” Interesting! Isn’t there another fish market store on 116th closer to Lenox Ave? Either way, if a fish market does open in the old Obama Chicken location that would be another nice option to have in this area of Harlem! Yes or no?

Participate in Online Photo Contest, submit Harlem Holiday themed photos to win cash prizes

Douglas Elliman Real Estate, which in Harlem has an office located at 117th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd., is celebrating the holidays with an online photo contest. The contest is all about holiday photos. The “Home for the Holidays” online photo contest allows contestants to post photos through the company’s app linked to the Douglas Elliman Facebook page for easy submission.

Fans can submit any holiday themed photo or memory using the hash tag #EllimanPhotoContest. Images are synced to other social media sites as well, such as Instagram and Pinterest. Contestants can use any kind of holiday spirit photo as long as it has a themed subject matter. Whether you take pictures of holiday decorations, loved ones, pets, menorahs, styles or festivities, there are no limits to the amount of photos that you enter for the “Home for the Holidays” contest.

First place winners receive $500 and are also going to be featured on the Elliman Facebook page with a video profile. Other social media sites will also feature the winner. Two runner up photos will also receive cash prizes for $250 each.

In order to win, photos will be voted on by contest participants and Elliman is providing a panel of experts to judge each photo submission. Judges will look at each photo for creativity, subject matter, aesthetic value and authenticity. Popularity of the photo will also factor into judging.

Photo submissions will be accepted through January 3rd.

Harlem Local and Designer Rod Keenan lands in The Wall Street Journal

I was flipping through The Wall Street Journal’s Greater New York section yesterday…and wha-la saw Harlem local and hat maker Rod Keenan smack dab right there in the middle of the paper. Apparently, he attended the NY Botanical Garden’s annual fundraiser for children’s programs. Fancy stuff!

If you’re not familiar with Keenan’s products, his hats are high-end and generally sold at affluent places, such as Barney’s New York. And he has a large celebrity clientele, which is another indicator that these hats don’t come cheap.

HSA After School Programs offers several classes in music, dance, theatre, visual arts & musical theatre. Classes fill up quickly so register right away , i.e. before February 2nd.
