Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater turns 80

Happy birthday to the Apollo Theater in Harlem! Today, the iconic American venue turned 80 years old.

The Apollo stage has been graced by everyone from Ella Fitzgerald to James Brown, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and even President Barack Obama.

“The Apollo opened on Jan. 26, 1934, a year after the original venue at 253 W. 125th St., Hurtig and Seamon’s New Burlesque Theater, shut down.”

Free screening in Harlem, see Pompeii with Kit Harington of TV’s Game of Thrones

There is another free screening happening in Harlem on February 6 at 7 pm at Magic Johnson Theater. The movie is POMPEII.

Set in 79 A.D., POMPEII tells the epic story of Milo (Kit Harington), a slave turned invincible gladiator who finds himself in a race against time to save his true love Cassia (Emily Browning), the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant who has been unwillingly betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts in a torrent of blazing lava, Milo must fight his way out of the arena in order to save his beloved as the once magnificent Pompeii crumbles around him.

Harlem holiday lighting events, Marcus Garvey Park December 5 and Frederick Douglass Circle December 12

There are two Harlem holiday lighting events happening for us to attend. Tonight is the annual Holiday Celebration of Lights at Marcus Garvey Park. It starts at 7 pm. Additional details are below.

A week from today, December 12th, the Friends of Frederick Douglass Circle are hosting a Holiday Tree Lighting starting at 6 pm. More information below.

So in essence our Thursdays are booked for December. Attend one or both events! See you there!

Lido Harlem offering wine and dinner tastings for upcoming holiday season

Ballet Hispanico returns to Apollo Theater with three new works and live music

Ballet Hispanico, recognized as the nation’s leading Latino dance organization since 1970, returns to the legendary Apollo Theater on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 7:30pm, following last season’s sold-out holiday performance. The performance is sponsored by Goya Foods. Highlights include a seductive world premiere by Edgar Zendejas inspired by the beloved Mexican celebration “Día de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead), and the Apollo premiere of Belgian-Colombian Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Sombrerísimo, an athletic tour de force for six male dancers. The world premiere of Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro’s Hogar will be set to vibrant live music by Ljova and the Kontraband, a mix of classical, Latin, and gypsy melodies.

Attend Harlem Holiday Lights November 21

On Thursday, November 21, from 10am-9:30pm the 125th Street Business Improvement District will kick off the holiday shopping season with its Harlem Holiday Lights 2013 celebration. This year the event will include an outdoor festival, in-store and on- the-street activities as well as a scavenger hunt and parade of lights. This FREE event, open to the public, will celebrate two significant milestones– 20-years of BID operations and the 200th anniversary of 125th Street being placed on the Great Manhattan Street Grid.

Throughout the day and evening there will be promotions from businesses on 1-2-5 that include free food samples and refreshments, in-store discounts, raffles, hand massages, a Casino Party, photos with Santa, toy and coat drives, financial literacy seminars, free checking check-up with gift, free green dot cards (activated), free admission to museum gallery, and more. ABC broadcast journalist, Sandra Bookman is Grand Marshall for the momentous parade. A map of all the activities and a list of activities appear on the website www.harlemlightitup.com. Attend Brownstone Live November 9, a live show and art gallery a Harlem brownstone

On Saturday November 9th, The Davidson Family will open up their home once again for, Brownstone Live, a live show and art gallery in The Davidson Family Harlem brownstone. Musician, artist, and yogini Tamara Davidson started the salon series to showcase emerging, innovative young musicians and visual artists in an intimate, open, and loving environment. The series began the summer of 2012 and has been a cultural highlight for the New York community since.

This year performers include The Javier Santiago Trio, Bae Bro, vhvl, and Tamara. Visual artists include Sonia Louise Davis and Ivan Forde. All are invited to attend. Tickets are $10. Purchase tickets here or RSVP to shashamusic9@gmail.com.

Minton’s officially opens it’s doors today to the public in Harlem

Minton’s, located at 206 118th Street, officially opens tonight! Minton’s will offer live jazz music nightly from the Minton’s house band. Minton’s will be open for dinner six days a week from 5 pm until 12 am, with three pre-set seatings each night. Reservations are required. Men are required to wear jackets.

Free screening in Harlem of Last Vegas starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline

There is a free film screening October 21 at Magic Johnson Theater in Harlem of Last Vegas starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline. The free screening starts at 7 pm.
