The Things to do in Harlem: Studio Museum Harlem to launch Metal Fabulous

The good folks over at Studio Museum Harlem have given us the heads up that they will be launching Metal Fabulous from noon to 6 pm, November 15-17, 2013.

Metal Fabulous is a husband-and-wife team best known for their unique designs using African cowry shells. Lately they’ve turned up their design style a notch by experimenting with different finishes on silver, brass and copper—and the results are Metal Fabulous!

Harlem’s first Red Lobster set to open to the public November 11, next to the Apollo Theater

Another chain restaurant is opening in Harlem. Red Lobster has sent out the invites announcing they are having a ribbon-cutting ceremony this coming Monday in honor of its Harlem branch opening to the public on the same day at 11 am. The Harlem Red Lobster is located next to the historic Apollo Theater.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will include a performance by the Veterans of the 369th Sargent Association, remarks from Red Lobster executives and local officials, and Artist Alethia Brown’s work will be showcased in the RL lounge commissioned by the Harlem Arts Alliance.

Attend Brownstone Live November 9, a live show and art gallery a Harlem brownstone

On Saturday November 9th, The Davidson Family will open up their home once again for, Brownstone Live, a live show and art gallery in The Davidson Family Harlem brownstone. Musician, artist, and yogini Tamara Davidson started the salon series to showcase emerging, innovative young musicians and visual artists in an intimate, open, and loving environment. The series began the summer of 2012 and has been a cultural highlight for the New York community since.

This year performers include The Javier Santiago Trio, Bae Bro, vhvl, and Tamara. Visual artists include Sonia Louise Davis and Ivan Forde. All are invited to attend. Tickets are $10. Purchase tickets here or RSVP to shashamusic9@gmail.com.

The second annual East Harlem Harvest Festival is happening this weekend, October 27, at 116th Street and Park Avenue. The event starts and 10 am and will last until about 6 pm. See full list below of what to expect at this years East Harlem Harvest Festival.

Free screening in Harlem of Last Vegas starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline

There is a free film screening October 21 at Magic Johnson Theater in Harlem of Last Vegas starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline. The free screening starts at 7 pm.

The Association of Pro Bono Counsel to host Legal Expo in Harlem providing free legal counseling for Small Businesses and Nonprofits

On Tuesday, October 29, the Association of Pro Bono Counsel (APBCo) will host the inaugural Small Business Legal Academy to provide free legal counseling for small businesses and non-profits at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater from 9 am to 6 pm. This one-day event will bring together corporate law firms, financial services consultants, city and state agencies, and other service providers to lead workshops and provide one-on-one legal consultations. Topics discussed will include intellectual property law, not-for-profit formation and commercial leasing legislations, among others. Spanish and French interpreters will also be available.

Spend Halloween in Harlem, Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance to host event October 31

Need plans for Halloween? How about spending Halloween on Harlem’s restaurant row? The Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance (FDBA) is organizing a Halloween in Harlem party along Frederick Douglass Blvd. Several businesses shown below with their logo will be handing out candy to trick or treaters and decorating their windows for all passerby’s to view.

Save the date: Harlem Art Walk Tour happening October 11-13, 2013

The ninth annual Harlem Art Walk Tour (HAWT™) will happen once again in October. The event kicks off with an Artist Reception on Friday, October 11 from 7:30-9:30 PM at Artist & Craftsman Supply, 2108 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. The actual walking tour, which is free, takes place the following day Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13 from noon to 6pm at more than forty venues throughout Central Harlem.

Casa Frela Gallery, located at 47 West 119th Street, is the cornerstone of the event, and the starting point where Guidebooks and information will be distributed to tour participants. The tour will feature the work of more than 60 artists living and working in Harlem, as well as environmental tours and workshops, and educational outreach.

Harlem Fire Watchtower celebration happening today September 21

The Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association along with Marcus Garvey Park Alliance and New York City Parks and Recreation are hosting a celebration today, September 21, in honor of the successful fund-raising efforts recently achieved to restore the Harlem Fire Watchtower.

The celebration is happening at the Acropolis in Marcus Garvey Park so that guests can get a close up view of the Harlem Fire Watchtower before it is disassembled for restoration. Start time is at 3 pm. Entrance is at 124th Street and Fifth Avenue. See you there.
