AOL features Harlem on Gadling

If you’re not on Flipboard, Taptu or Pulse on your Ipad, get there soon. I am finding a load of information about Harlem on these app tools, such as Gadling, which has a profile of Harlem up on their site. Gadling is an AOL travel blog.

In their profile on Harlem, they list different things to do than The Boston Globe or The Financial Times. They tell their readers to check out places in Harlem, such as the Jazz Museum, Hip Hop Culture Center, Patsy’s in Spanish Harlem, WYZ Bar at the Aloft Hotel and more. Harlem featured in The Boston Globe

Not too long ago, Harlem was profiled in  The Financial Times, the UK-based publication. Now The Boston Globe takes its turn and profiles our community in its travel section this past weekend (June 5). Jessica Allen, the reporter, spends two days in Harlem along with her husband and discovers “Harlem makes a visitor feel and taste its forward movement.”

The article highlights various experiences from listening to jazz, to eating at Amy Ruth’s and to drinking at some of our unique establishments, such as 67 Orange and bier international. However, the most notable items in this article are not necessarily about places, but crafted words about Harlem. Allen states “perhaps no other area in New York so eagerly honors its history as Harlem.” She points to our famously named streets, such as Malcolm X and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Furthermore, Allen goes on to say “despite the interest in what came before, these days Harlem seems utterly future-oriented.”

We couldn’t agree more with The Boston Globe! And to Jessica Allen and her husband, come back and see us (Harlem) again now!

Duke Ellington tribute in ‘Cotton Club Parade’

Duke Ellington, Harlem’s famous jazz musician who is honored with a beautiful sculpture at East 110th Street and Fifth Avenue, performed at the Cotton Club in Harlem in the 1920’s and ’30’s. Now City Center’s Encores! series and Jazz at Lincoln Center will pay respect to the jazz great with “Cotton Club Parade,” a tribute to Ellington’s performances. “Cotton Club Parade” will have six performances at City Center this November (Nov. 18 to 22) with musical direction by Wynton Marsalis and featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

The series will run every two years, with the next production scheduled at the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center during its 2013-14 season. Tickets for “Cotton Club Parade” can be purchased through City Center beginning Aug. 15.

PS 161 in Harlem dances with Houston gal Beyonce

The students at PS 161 Pedro Albizu Campos Middle in Harlem received a nice surprise yesterday (May 3rd). Mrs. Jay Z, also known as Beyonce, made a surprise visit to the Harlem school located at 499 West 133rd Street. The visit was a part of the “Let’s Move” promotion, which is the First Lady Michelle Obama’s youth fitness campaign.

A group of students were filming their rendition of Beyonce’s “Move Your Body” video when Beyonce made her way out on to the floor of the school’s gymnasium and surprised the group of students. In addition to dancing with the students, Beyonce posed for photographs with them. Very nice! See more coverage at JustJared.com.

One of Harlem’s A-List couples graces the cover of Uptown Magazine

It’s Spring time! That means it’s time for magazines to feature the most beautiful people on the planet on the cover. Uptown Magazine falls in line and starts off April right by pleasing the eye. In their annual Gourmet Issue, one of Harlem’s A-List couples graces the April cover. It is Red Rooster Harlem owner and celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson and his drop dead gorgeous wife and model Gate Maya Haile.

For the Gourmet edition, the Samuelsson’s gave Uptown Mag incredible access. The Harlem couple allowed the magazine to photograph them all over Red Rooster. Take a look at the behind the scenes coverage. The pictures and video are incredible. I just learned more details about the after party talking place this Monday, February 14 for the Girls Night Out screening of Jumping the Broom. The after party will take place at Hue-Man Book Store around 9 p.m. when the screening is expected to end. Those that get into the film screening of Jumping the Broom will receive tickets to go to the after party at Hue-Man!

In addition to HarlemCondoLife.com being a partner for Girls Night Out screening of Jumping the Broom and now Hue-Man, I have also learned that Harlem Arts Alliance, Nectar Wine Bar, Bikram Yoga, Twirl, BodyHeat by NyLean25, Munaluchi Bridal Magazine, and the planned Cupcake Suite are partners as well! Listen up, all you amazing and single HarlemGals. Yes, you! You’re invited to a “girls night out!” HarlemCondoLife.com would like to invite you to a free film screening of Jumping the Broom starring Julie Bowen, Paula Patton, Meagan Good, Angela Bassett, Mike Epps, and more, this coming Monday (February 14th) at the Magic Johnson Theater. Jumping the Broom is about “a collision of worlds when two African-American families from divergent socioeconomic backgrounds get together one weekend in Martha’s Vineyard for a wedding.”

In addition to the free film screening, there is an after party for all the awesome women who get to attend the free film screening in Harlem. New York Magazine acknowledges, Harlem is hot

What a difference a year makes?  Let’s reflect! April 11, 2010 Harlem is poorly ranked by Nate Silver for New York Magazine’s Neighborhood Issue. Does anyone remember this article? I certainly do. That article inspired me to write Top ten reason why Harlem is one of the best neighborhoods to live in. Let’s fast forward to today. Harlem and several local establishments are currently featured bright and big this week in a series of articles under the banner The Everything Guide to Harlem in NY Mag. It’s a creme-de-la-creme of articles featuring restaurants, markets, shops and bars in Harlem. My favorite article is The New New Harlem, which is sort of a “Whose In and Whose Out.” In my view, featuring several establishments in this type of format demonstrates the caliber and variety of places located in Harlem. Plus in order to pit two businesses against each other, there has to be plenty of selection. Clearly, Harlem has reached that point.

In closing, I will use soccer terms to describe this Harlem milestone. This article is another G-O-A-L for Harlem. Remember, we won Curbed Cup 2010 too. More importantly, it recognizes (again) what most of us have known all along, and now NY Mag too, Harlem is hot! Adelante!

Harlem businesses come together to ‘Kiss and Tell’

Tonight, several Harlem businesses, such as Harlem Flo, The Winery, Make My Cake, Tonnie’s Minis, Aloft Hotel and Yatenga, are gathering together to “Kiss & Tell.” Well, not exactly that, but sort of! These Harlem businesses will be on hand Tuesday evening, starting at 6 p.m., to offer gift advice for Valentine’s Day. According to Harlem Flo’s Facebook site, the February 8th event will “feature unique and creative gifts items that you can purchase for your loved ones for V-day and there after.”

So if you need something for your cupid or yourself, head on over to Harlem Flo, second location at 2276 Frederick Douglass Blvd., at West 122nd Street.

It is a snow day for most of us and if you forgot to stock up the fridge, like I did, what should one do for lunch today, tomorrow or next week? Hmmm. Since lunch and brunch are now being offered at Red Rooster Harlem, I am gonna head on over to 310 Lenox Avenue for “The Lunch Tray.” “The Lunch Tray” is a tasty prix fixe special that offers three courses for $17. It starts today and will be available during lunch service, Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Check out today’s menu. And see you at Red Rooster Harlem!
