If you missed trying out Belgium waffles this past week in Harlem, there will be another opportunity! Wafels & Dinges is returning to the same spot Jan 22 in Harlem, which is right in front of Best Yet Market on Frederick Douglass Blvd. The waffle food truck is returning to Harlem after a successful night of sales this past week!

The owner tells HarlemGal Inc that if strong sales continue, the Wafels & Dinges truck will be parked on FDB every Tuesday from now on.

To purchase waffles this coming Tuesday in Harlem, walk along FDB between 118th and 119th Street. Wafels & Dinges will be there from 6-10 pm!

VH1’s Love & Hip Hop filming at Harlem Food Bar tonight, Jan 15

Walking along Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem tonight, I noticed a bunch of TV cameras inside and outside Harlem Food Bar, which is on FDB between 113th and 114th Street. This is the scoop. VH1 is at Harlem Food Bar this evening taping the Love & Hip Hop reality show.

VH1 was also at Harlem Food Bar not too long ago filming Black Ink Crew – not to mention Cedric French Bistro as well.

Harlem is even more popular with the entertainment industry. Every time you turn, the film and TV industry is in our Harlem backyard filming/taping something. Pretty cool.

As for tonight, Harlem Food Bar is open to the public, not just to the reality show, so stop on by order some food and have a drink! Cheers!

The Park Wine Bar in Harlem receiving push back from neighbors

HG Photo IMG_2068
Did anyone notice the recent article in The New York Daily News about the upcoming Park Wine Bar in Harlem? Apparently, Harlem neighbors, mainly those that live in building above where the wine bar plans to open, are already complaining to Community Board 10 about the self-serve wine bar’s plans to have an outdoor patio in the back of the building. The Park Wine Bar will be located at 2080 Frederick Douglass Blvd between 112th and 113th.

For those of us who have lived in Harlem a while, know that this location was an abandoned lot for the longest time. No building/business/residents existed there until the building went up. Fast forward to today and we have a wine bar moving in and neighbors above complaining. Cheez…how things change.

Just curious. What are your thoughts on the subject?

First look at rendering of upcoming Harlem restaurant, Vinateria

Vinateria for HG photo
A few months ago we told you about the upcoming Harlem restaurant, Vinateria, which will be located at 2211 Frederick Douglass Blvd. and 119th Street. This Harlem blog has an update with a FIRST look at the rendering of Vinateria! Take a look above! This is how Vinateria will eventually look. Pretty cool…huh? I have seen the inside of Vinateria Harlem and what I can tell you is that this new restaurant will have a nice big chocolatety/brown bar to the right when you walk in with gold-plated hanging sconces over it. The rest of the place is in full construction, but it is coming along.

HG photo 20121220-202621.jpgYvette, the owner and another Harlem resident who is investing in where they live, tells this blog she is aiming to open in the first business quarter of 2013. The owner also notes that her dining establishment will not just be a wine bar. They are building a full service kitchen inside as you read this blog post. So no more thinking of this place as a wine bar. It will be a complete restaurant with indoor seating for 57 people. Yvette described her new upcoming Harlem eatery as more of a ‘Vino y Cocina’ (Wine and Kitchen) that will serve “inspired seasonal cuisine centered on the marriage of wine and food in its most complementary expression.”

“We will offer a wine list hand-tailored by our in-house wine connoisseur and designed to complement our skillfully prepared menu. The food will be every bit as interesting as the wine and will tantalize with more than a few twists and turns on comfort food favorites that range from appetizers available at our bar to main courses and deserts,” says Yvette.

Their website is coming soon as well. Here is their landing page.

So there you have it.The first look at Vinateria in Harlem! Mark your calendars! Vinateria is coming to Harlem’s restaurant row soon!

Ring in 2013 at Lido Italian Restaurant and Bar in Harlem, see menu

IMAG0122
I am sure most of our Harlem restaurants will be doing something special to ring in the New Year. Lido Harlem, located at 117th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd., is ready to share their plans and this is what will be happening. Lido Harlem is offering four course prix fixe. It includes a champagne toast for $70 plus tax and service. There will also be a three course for $55 plus tax and service. That will also include a champagne toast.

Lido Harlem plans on creating a social atmosphere so they are not doing two seatings because they want to keep it fun and casual. Reservations are required, except at the bar. If you plan to sit at the bar, it is recommended to go early.

Harlem’s Frederick Douglass Boulevard goes mainstreaming says NY Times

IMG_1880
Harlem’s restaurant row, aka Frederick Douglass Blvd between 110th and 125th Street, is back in the news again. The New York Times recently IMG_2762spoke with Leon Ellis, the owner of Moca Lounge, Chocolat Restaurant and Harlem Underground, about how this part of Harlem has gone through a complete transformation since he first opened Moca, which was back in 2003.  Ellis told the NY Times that his friends thought he was crazy for opening up a restaurant back then. Since 2003, Ellis has expanded his business presence in Harlem on FDB with Chocolat opening about two years ago and then Harlem Underground, a Harlem-themed clothing store.

The owners of bier international were also interviewed for the article and stressed that while this area is going mainstream, they emphasized “we need to find a balance and not forget what was here” in Harlem.

The Park Wine Bar in Harlem is coming together, construction photos released

Back in June 2012, HarlemGal Inc exclusively announced that The Park Restaurant & Wine Bar was coming to Harlem, specifically on Frederick Douglass Blvd. The Park Wine Bar aims to be Harlem’s first and only self-serve wine bar on restaurant row. According to recently released photos by the upcoming Harlem business, that goal is moving toward reality. The floor has been set and so has the structure of the bar. The photos also gives the appearance that this drinking and dining establishment will be spacious-similar to Harlem Tavern and Corner Social. Those Harlem places are large and can hold a lot of patrons. Looks like The Park Wine Bar in Harlem plans to do the same.

Savann Turkish Restaurant coming to Harlem, joining restaurant row

The restaurant scene on Harlem’s restaurant row is about to get more diverse. A very reliable source and long time reader passed along some juicy info! Apparently, the sponsor of 2280 Frederick Douglass Condominium, you know the place that was rumored to be in discussion with Busboys and Poets, but passed on sealing the deal with the DC-based chain, has recently signed a lease with the owners of Savann, a turkish restaurant that use to be located on the upper west side. This new Harlem restaurant will keep the same name and the menu will be similar, according to a source on the restaurant side familiar with the lease. Savann will rent part, not all, of the retail/commercial space that is near Harlem Flo.

If you are not unfamiliar with the former Savann, read here for more info.

And stay tune, Savann Turkish Restaurant plans to open in late 2013!

Harlem’s Lido Italian Restaurant and Bar to host ‘Gay-borhood Mixer’ November 12

Harlem is a very diverse community that is inclusive of all people. Lido Harlem, located on the southeast corner of 117th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd., enjoys and succeeds at serving up fine dishes  to all walks of life.  They recognize-and I agree with them-there appears to be a growing presence of the gay community in South Harlem. To cater to this particular demographic, they are hosting their first Harlem LGBT Community Mixer on November 12 from 9 pm to 11 pm with an extended happy hour that will feature drink specials!

I raise my glass to Lido Harlem for organizing this mixer.  We all know they are not the first to cater to the gay community in Harlem. Billies Black, Natives Restaurant and more have always catered and welcomed the LGBT Community of Harlem long before most of us moved here. However,  for Lido Harlem to do this, I say why not and go for it!
