Move over Fifth Avenue, Harlem is getting into the holiday windows game. Spanning the corridor of Frederick Douglass Boulevard between 114th and the 122nd streets, eight Harlem businesses will display windows designed and executed by fifteen students from the Fashion Institute of Technology’s (FIT) Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design (VPED) BFA program. The window displays will depict holiday-themed scenes from the Harlem Renaissance. The windows will be on view from November 30 to January 2. Visitors are invited to stroll through the historic neighborhood throughout the holidays and enjoy the window displays, while learning a bit of Harlem’s rich history.

To kick off the season, two free window tours on November 30 and December 3 will be provided by ArtCrawl Harlem, Inc. The tours will feature live storytellers and vignettes with actors and performers bringing the windows to life. The family friendly outing will also include free children’s activity and coloring books, highlighting historical themes of the period, and refreshments from some of the participating restaurants.

Windows will be decorated at the following businesses:

Things to do with kids in Harlem: Children’s yoga starts March 8 at Land Yoga

I ran into Lara from Land Yoga in Harlem yesterday and I told her I can’t wait for my daughter to try children’s yoga when she gets bigger. That’s a ways off. So for now I pass on this information to all Harlem parents to take advantage. A new season of children’s yoga classes starts next month at Land Yoga in Harlem. Classes for 2-3 year olds begin March 8th and classes begin March 11 for kids 4-7 years old. For more information and to register, click here.

Land Yoga instructor and Harlem local featured in July/August issue of Yoga Journal

A bit of Harlem is featured in the recent edition of Yoga Journal. A photo of Land Yoga instructor and local Harlem Gal Dana Elyse Tarasavage is in Yoga Journal for their July/August edition. Yoga Journal asks readers for their On Location segment to send in their favorite pose photos from travels around the world. A photo of Tarasavage was sent in of her in Mysore, India striking a difficult yoga pose right there on the street among Indians and their favorite and sacred animal, the cow.

If you haven’t met or taken one of Tarasavage’s classes at Land Yoga in Harlem, you’re missing out. I have personally taken her class many times and enjoy it very much! Dana Elyse Tarasavage is at Harlem’s Land Yoga Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and Saturday morning. Land Yoga is located on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 114th and 115th Street.
