Russell Simmons’ major f*** up, Simmons should visit the Harriet Tubman Sculpture in Harlem

20130816-115155.jpg

Pardon my French in the headline, but Russell Simmons needs some serious training in black history and he clearly should come to Harlem ASAP to pay respect to the amazing Harriet Tubman, the African-American abolitionist and humanitarian during the American Civil War, after the stunt his music label pulled. What in God’s green earth were they thinking? Read the clip here on what happened cause I’m not going to repeat Russell Simmons’ major screw up. But I do think he should do more after that error.

If you haven’t heard the latest, Russell Simmons is sorry now for the recent actions of his music label and he offered his apologies. Whatever! In my view, this screw up by Russell Simmons needs further action by him.

Lets start with…how about paying respect to this great woman by visiting the sculpture in Harlem dedicated to her, ie the Harriet Tubman Sculpture at 122nd and Frederick Douglass Blvd? Show some real respect Russell Simmons! Honor this American by visiting an area in Harlem dedicated to her! Feel free to use the visit as a photo-op too. You could use it right now.

Pay up too for this mistake. Russell Simmons should support his apology writing out a big fat check to an African-American organization of his choice that supports women. After all, if you’re truly sorry for this insult to Harriet Tubman (and all women), putting your money where your mouth/apology is will make it more authentic/PR effective. What do you say, Russell?

And last, from one yogi to another, cause those of us who practice yoga know you like this ancient Indian practice, why not distribute material on YouTube that enlightens the world, not trashes it?

Not sure where the Harriet Tubman Sculpture is located? To visit the Harriet Tubman Sculpture, take the B or C subway line to 116th Street or A or D train to 125th Street or take your limo! The sculpture stands at the crossroads of St. Nicholas Avenue, West 122nd Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem.

Is Kidberry in Harlem closing?

IMG_7191

HarlemGal Inc loves blogging about all things positive related to Harlem. However, there are going to be some instances where the Harlem news is not all roses. For example, this blog is hearing some sad news on and offline about Kidberry, a children’s education center located on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd between 122nd and 123rd Street. The rumor mill, which HarlemGal Inc is practically 90 percent sure its not a rumor based on sources, is that Kidberry in Harlem is closing its doors for good. Done. Finished, etc.

Reasons  for the closing have not surfaced…yet. Our guess is that will happen in due time. As soon as we know why Kidberry in Harlem is closing, we will pass that information along.

Now for the big questions. Where will Harlem parents take their infants and toddlers for educational classes? Is there some place else close by? Thoughts? HarlemGal Inc would love to hear your feedback? Chime in…

New Harlem business arising at ACP and 111th Street, another opens in Harlem’s Sugar Hill

20130807-073105.jpg
When it comes down to what’s opening/coming to Harlem, leave it to HarlemGal readers to know the scoop. They provide good, credible tips and we have two tips here to pass along!

Recently, one reader commented via Twitter that “a new bar must be coming to Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd and 111th Street (1838 ACP)! A name called Suzy-Q’s has applied for a liquor license.” Hmm, sounds interesting. This blog does not have confirmation of that. However, I walked by that corner this weekend and there does appear to be some construction action happening on the northwest corner of ACP and 111th Street. If anyone knows more, feel free to chime in!

Another longtime resident of Harlem and a reader of this blog wrote in and said, “just wanted to pass a tip along of a new bar/grill called Solace at 143rd Street and Broadway. They opened on July 3 and are still awaiting their liquor license. In the meantime, they have a full menu and hookahs all set to a deep house music soundtrack. I visited on Saturday and was very pleasantly surprised!” According to Solace’s website, they offer “a comfortable dining experience featuring high quality bar cuisine with an emphasis on fabulous, fresh burgers.”

So there we have it, one new Harlem bar possibly coming to Central Harlem and another bar and grill opens in Sugar Hill.

A big thanks to HarlemGal readers!

Sign says apartments for rent at 2126 Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem

20130805-075124.jpg

20130805-075136.jpg
There is signage up at the recently renovated Harlem building located at 2126 Frederick Douglass Blvd. that says apartments for rent by CitiHabitats. When I went to the website to view the listing, I only saw 5 Harlem apartments listed and get ready for this…the apartments listed range from $4700 for a 4 bedroom/2bath to $4000 for a 3 bedroom/2 bath.

I find that rent to be pricey however, this part of Harlem has experienced the most growth in the last couple of years, it’s known as Harlem’s restaurant row and its nestled between two big parks, ie Central Park North and Morningside Park. If I had to bet, my guess is CitiHabitats will probably get the rent they are asking. What do you think? Is the rent reasonable for these Harlem apartments or “too damn high” as the saying goes?
