This past weekend, HarlemGal Inc was the first blog to introduce The Harlem Pearl, a four-day to go detox plan, which will be located at the old newspaper kiosk on 112th and Frederick Douglass Blvd. There was a lecture planned for this evening, October 2, at 5 and Diamond Harlem. However, that event has been cancelled. The organizers of the event have provided additional information on the Plan in the interim, such as a complete description of the Plan along with an Aging and Reactive Foods List.

NYC Parks and Recreation announced yesterday (August 9) the launch of designated Senior Swim hours at 14 public pools citywide, two of the 14 pools participating are in Harlem. The Harlem pools are Jackie Robinson Pool and Thomas Jefferson Pool.
Senior Swim hours offer adults a stress-free, quieter time to socialize, swim, stretch, and enjoy the benefits of water in NYC Parks’ outdoor pools. The program runs from July 9 through August 24, and is open to those over the age of 62. Please note: there are no fitness instruction involved in the program.
On July 9 at the Thomas Jefferson Pool, the Harlem Honey and Bears Swim Club, a synchronized swimming group for adults 50 and older, kicked off the Senior Swim Program with a synchronized performance.

I just learned from EG Bodyworks that this week is Spa Week and its being celebrated at Polish Finger Tips in Harlem. From now until April 22, interested participants can enjoy a 50 minute massage, either Swedish or Deep Tissue, with Edwin Genece of EG Bodywork for $50 this week at the Harlem salon located at 2198 Frederick Douglass Blvd. They are also offering specialized mani/pedi’s for $50 during Spa Week as well. I walked by Coco Nail Salon, located near the corner of 114th Street and FDB, to check if they are open and they are! They opened last night, October 10.
As for rates, I know they are a few dollars cheaper than Z Nails on 116th. Their mani/pedi is $25 during the week and $29 on the weekends. Z Nails charges $35 for mani/pedi any day of the week. However, I am not sure on service and quality with Coco. They maybe less expensive, but let’s see how they perform on quality and service. Did anyone see the article in The New York Daily News this past weekend on the best places to live in the Big Apple for retirees? I thought it was really interesting. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Morningside Heights, an area located in West Harlem, was ranked third out of 10 places in the City. Murray Hill was ranked first and the Lower East Side was ranked last.
The article states there are several reasons why it is a great area for retirees. Morningside Heights is “one of the easiest places to live… There is something to do every night (lectures, classical concerts, film series, etc.), and it will keep anyone young.” Amen to that. I don’t live too far from Morningside Heights. I now know where to go to stay…forever young!

Save the date of October 8th! That is when the annual Harlem Harvest Festival takes place on the corner of 116th Street and St. Nicholas Ave! I went last year and had a wonderful time visiting all the street vendors, eating and watching the performances from the Dance Theater of Harlem. It is a great way to kick off the Fall season.

There are several exciting yoga events happening in the month of September in Harlem. Some events are as simple and important as the release of a new Fall schedule or an introduction to a traditional Indian medical system known as Ayurveda.
Harlem Yoga Studio, located at 44 West 125th Street, has implemented their Fall yoga schedule, which includes more yoga classes for adults and children. In addition, Harlem Yoga Studio will continue to offer free outdoor yoga through September on Saturday mornings from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Target East Community Garden, located at 117th Street between 1st Ave and Pleasant Avenue.
At Land Yoga on Frederick Douglass Blvd and 114th Street, they will be offering an introduction to Ayurveda on Friday, September 9 from 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. The workshop will examine simple remedies that will help promote calmness and ease from stress especially during the fall season. On September 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Land Yoga is also hosting An Evening of Bharata Natyam performed by Jaan R. Freeman. Bharata Natyam is the most popular of the classical dance of India. The new nail salon that is opening on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 113th and 114th Street on the eastside of the street has a name! The place will be called Coco! Interesting. Maybe it’s named after that reality show on E!?
Apparently, the owners that are opening up this salon in Harlem are seasoned professionals. This will be their third nail salon in Manhattan. Plans to open Coco Nail Salon are slated for mid-September! So stay tuned.
