On June 21, look around in Harlem. You may hear music everywhere. Harlem Park to Park (HP2P) and its HP2P businesses are taking part in Make Music New York, the citywide free live musical celebration on Tuesday, June 21st.
From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., participating Harlem Park to Park businesses will become impromptu outdoor stages offering live musical performances and some select specials. A complete list of business are listed below.

As side from the farmers market taking place this weekend (June 18) in Morningside Park, there is another activity to check out, NYC KidFest. NYC KidFest is a free, one-day family event bringing artistic performances to NYC families. Packed with music, theater, dance, storytelling, face-painting and much more; this festival promises to delight, inspire and jump-start the imaginations of children of all ages in a fun atmosphere.
To attend, enter the park at 113th Street and Manhattan Avenue. If you are coming from downtown, take the 1, B or C subway trains to West 110th Street.

The lovely and talented Halle Berry was in Harlem last night (June 14) according to a HCL follower on Twitter. Apparently, she was in town for a benefit dinner organized by Mayor Bloomberg. Of course, the fundraiser was at…where else, Red Rooster Harlem. President Obama has started a trend.
Halle Berry was joined by Law and Order actress Mariska Hargitay and the Mayor himself! We were also told that singer Estelle, who has performed at the Apollo with John Legend, was the entertainment at last nights benefit. Very cool!

If you have been wondering when Land Yoga will open on Frederick Douglass Blvd., it is happening this week. On June 16th, the will have a soft opening, but not without thinking of others. Land Yoga will be donating $1 for each student who comes to practice to Odanadi, a non-profit which helps fight against Human Trafficking. Society Coffee is joining Land Yoga to raise money for this great cause. So if you’re around this coming Thursday morning, stop by Society Cafe or Land Yoga. They are both located on or near the corner of West 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd. Om!

June is Pride Month. Let me be more clear, it is Harlem Pride Month and that’s when there are an array of special events dedicated to the LGBT community. One event opened this past weekend hosted by the Casa Frela Gallery called Living in Color, a unique exhibition and performance installation celebrating both Harlem Pride and the pride of LGBT artists of color throughout New York City.
Living in Color features an exhibition of photography, acrylic paintings, ink drawings, mixed-media, water colors, collages and even a toy theater. The exhibit opened on June 11 and will run daily from noon to 4 p.m. through June 30.
General viewing of the exhibit is free. On June 18, the performances are ticketed. It is $15 general admission and $20 for artists wishing to illustrate female and male live models during a two-hour drawing session. Check for updates on the Casa Frela Gallery website.
A portion of the proceeds from the performances and from the sale of the exhibited art will be donated to charities that support educational opportunities for communities of color and/or provide therapeutic support for LGBT youth of color.

If you’re not on Flipboard, Taptu or Pulse on your Ipad, get there soon. I am finding a load of information about Harlem on these app tools, such as Gadling, which has a profile of Harlem up on their site. Gadling is an AOL travel blog.
In their profile on Harlem, they list different things to do than The Boston Globe or The Financial Times. They tell their readers to check out places in Harlem, such as the Jazz Museum, Hip Hop Culture Center, Patsy’s in Spanish Harlem, WYZ Bar at the Aloft Hotel and more. I wanted to share some good news with you. Remember how I told you about a film titled Changing Face of Harlem and how the filmmaker was trying to raise funds to get into the editing booth to finish the film! Well, Shawn Batey, the documentarian and the brainchild behind this film, reached her goal! That’s awesome news! Below is one of the notes I received from Shawn confirming the goods news. Shawn also sent out a separate note thanking select social networks,such as HCL and WeHarlem.com, and many others for helping to spread the good word about her film. To me, this is what makes blogging rewarding and what social networking is all about, i.e. sharing insightful information that can help make a difference.
A big congrats to Shawn and her film, Changing Face of Harlem. Can’t wait to see the final product!

I am happy to announce that we reached our $5,000 goal. THANK YOU so much to everyone who’s been so generous and helped us get there. We had 31 new backers come on board this week…that’s amazing! Thanks to you all we breezed past the goal 4 days ahead of the deadline!! The Kickstarter project for CHANGING FACE OF HARLEM runs until 12 noon on June 14. So please continue to share the campaign with family and friends who may have been waiting until the last minute to pledge. What is wonderful is that 88 backers from all over the world joined together to support this film!

Don’t forget the annual Mount Morris Park Annual House Tour is this weekend hosted by Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association. It is this Sunday, June 12th!
This is the time when one can see some of the most beautiful brownstones in New York City that make up Central Harlem, also known as the Mt. Morris Park area. Also the area was recently praised by New York Magazine.

Not too long ago, Harlem was profiled in  The Financial Times, the UK-based publication. Now The Boston Globe takes its turn and profiles our community in its travel section this past weekend (June 5). Jessica Allen, the reporter, spends two days in Harlem along with her husband and discovers “Harlem makes a visitor feel and taste its forward movement.”
The article highlights various experiences from listening to jazz, to eating at Amy Ruth’s and to drinking at some of our unique establishments, such as 67 Orange and bier international. However, the most notable items in this article are not necessarily about places, but crafted words about Harlem. Allen states “perhaps no other area in New York so eagerly honors its history as Harlem.” She points to our famously named streets, such as Malcolm X and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Furthermore, Allen goes on to say “despite the interest in what came before, these days Harlem seems utterly future-oriented.”
We couldn’t agree more with The Boston Globe! And to Jessica Allen and her husband, come back and see us (Harlem) again now!
