Is Trader Joe’s eyeing retail space at Circa Central Park in Harlem?

Rumor has it that the antithesis of Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, is working hard to have a presence in Harlem, specifically central Harlem so that they can compete with that Texas-based grocery chain. A real estate broker(s) has informed this blog that Trader Joe’s, the California-based food chain, is moving into the entire retail space offered at the swanky Circa Central Park building in Harlem! 

You know which building I’m talking about! It’s the space of a former gas station and the one selling an apartment for more than $8million dollars at the corner of West 110th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd! 

Yup, apparently the developers, which got Starbucks to move into their other building on Manhatten Avenue and 110th Street, are or close to sealing the deal with Trader Joe’s to move into Circa Central Park in Harlem. 

Hmm, there is another grocery store directly across from that new building. It’s called Central Market.

Citi Bike inching it’s way into Central Harlem

Walking along Central Park West in the 100s, I noticed a Citi Bike station at West 106th Street and CPW. It’s spanking brand new! Then it got me thinking, what about my area–Central Harlem? I know it’s coming, but where?

For those that do not know, or do know, the Citi Bike station is coming soon to 110th Street and Adam Clayton Powell! And that’s it for now for us Harlemites! Poohie. See map!

Citi Bike is well into East Harlem! Lucky them!

Ponty Bistro in Harlem turns two, happy birthday

Time flies when your making delicious food in Harlem! Ponty Bistro, the Harlem restaurant, helmed by Chef Cisse—a 2009 finalist in the hit Food Network show “Chopped,” turns two this month. 

Stop by Pontry Bistro Harlem located just off Strivers’ Row at 2375 Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard at 139th Street and wish them Happy Birthday! While you’re there try some of their signature dishes: Crispy Tuna, Fish Fataya, Truffle Macaroni and Cheese, Le Poulet Yassa, Niokolokoba and Poisson Braise A Le Guet Ndar. 

Brunch on weekends offers Lobster Benedict, French Toast, Scrambled Bruchetta, and much more.

Former Harlem mosque turning into luxury rentals

Does anyone remember this Harlem space on Frederick Douglass Blvd between 115 and 116th Street? It used to be a place of worship, a mosque. Now there are signs up on the scaffold that says the space is being turned into luxury rentals! Great, right?

This space probably would have been more ideal for affordable housing since it’s right in the thick of where all the change is happening. Is anyone surprised? Probably not.

How many luxury this and that do we need for this area? Oh I forgot, I’m in New York! There’s no such thing as affordable housing!

More room at Melba’s Restaurant in Harlem

She’s got a new book out and more space to dine in for her customers! Nice way to start the summer! That’s Melba Wilson I’m talking about. You know, the original HarlemGal who always says “born, bred and buttered in Harlem.”

Wilson purchased the space next door, which I believe was a hair salon, for her restaurant called Melba’s located on the southwest corner of 114th Street and Frederick Dougkass Blvd. 

Next time you stop by Melba’s, there will be more elbow room to eat those waffles with fried chicken and hopefully no more wait lines! Congrats Melba!

Annual Harlem Food & Drink Event set for June 8

The Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance will hold its fifth annual Food & Drink Boulevard event along Harlem’s Restaurant Row on Frederick Douglass Boulevard from 110th to 124th Streets June 8. 

Participating bars and restaurants include 67 Orange Street, Angel of Harlem, Harlem Burger Co., Harlem Food Bar, Harlem Tavern, Hop House Harlem, Jado Sushi, L Lounge, Lido, LoLo’s Seafood Shack, Mess Hall, Row House, Silvana, Streetbird and Vinateria. 

The Frederick Douglass Boulevard Alliance is also partnering with Uber to provide free rides for up to $20 to ticket holders who are new users of the app, and will provide ticket holders who are new and existing users with $20 off their first UberPOOLride.

Tickets to Food & Drink Boulevard will be sold online, starting May 16, at a discounted rate of two tickets for $10 until 11:59 p.m. on June 7, 2016, and will be available for purchase in person on the day of the event, June 8, 2016, for $10 each at Harlem Tavern, 2153 Frederick Douglass Boulevard on the corner of 116th Street.

Harlem Burger joining Harlem restaurant row

There have been several attempts to open a full service hamburger joint on or near Frederick Douglass Blvd, aka Harlem’s restaurant row, in past years but none have either succeeded to open or stay open. Now Harlem Pizza Co, which has its pizza joint on 116th Street, is hoping to be sort of the first to open a restaurant on row dedicated to hamburgers with a place called Harlem Burger! The signage is up on 118&FDB, a good indicator that it’s opening soon.

Attend Community Planning Workshop for CitiBike Share Expansion into Harlem

CitiBike is expand into Harlem and you have the opportunity to voice your opinion! NYC Department of Transportation’s Bike Share Program has scheduled a Community Planning Workshop for Harlem CB10 on Wednesday, November 18th. Attached is a flyer for reference. Also, here is a link for community members that cannot attend, but can still voice their views!

Inside Row House Harlem, interiors taking shape, now hiring

The plywood is down at Row House Harlem, opening soon at 115th Street and Frederick Douglass Blvd, and we have a glimpse of inside! Take a look!

The Harlem eatery is aiming to create “a chic subterranean look in the heart of Harlem’s restaurant row.” Have they done it?
